My heart breaks for this family and all families that have to experience anything like this. It's easy to say you shouldn't do this and you shouldn't allow that but in reality this can happen to any family. Please be careful and if you are going to be near open partially frozen water keep your dog on leash near you.

An Edmonton family is hoping to raise awareness after their dog disappeared under the ice of the North Saskatchewan river this past weekend.

Have you watched the movie Togo?

In 1925, diphtheria affected an isolated village in Alaska. Due to the severe cold, it was not possible to transport the medicines by plane and ship, so the transport of the medicines to the town of Noma was organized with the help of mushers (guides or drivers of a dog sled team).

About 1120 miles (1800 kilometers) had to be covered in five days. There were several teams and they took turns on different sections. The Norwegian Gunnar Kasen and his main dog Balto were the first to bring the serum to the village.

It turned out that Kasen had not made a mistake in choosing the main dog, because when the team had an accident, Balto helped his musher, saving him from certain death.

When the storm reached its peak and visibility became low they crossed 85 km. Balto is considered a hero, and in 1925 a monument was erected to him in Central Park in New York.

He was truly a hero, like all the other dogs during this mission. However, the dog that did the most difficult part of the work was Togo who crossed the longest distance 260 miles (418 kilometers). He was part of Leonardo Seppala team of dogs. Togo is the husky, in the photo.

Togo was already known for his incredible leadership qualities, which he demonstrated again in this race.

The mission was successfully completed and these brave dogs saved numerous lives.

It’s now easier for restaurants, bars and coffee shops to welcome pooches on patios. They no longer need to get approval from a public health inspector. 🐢🐾

Cutting red tape means more eateries can choose to allow patrons to dine with their pups. Check if a restaurant has a dog-friendly patio ahead of visiting.

Non-service dogs are allowed on patios only and must not pass through any indoor food handling or dining areas. Customers must keep their dogs on a leash or in a carrier and have physical control of them at all times.

Service dogs are allowed in indoor and outdoor dining areas.

EASY DIY TOOTHPASTE RECIPE!
We all grossly underestimate the power of oral hygiene. But the science is clear: oral health plays into everything about us. When our pets’ mouths and gums are clean and free of infection, we reduce their risk for dangerous inflammation that can affect their whole body.

Beginner’s Tip: If you’ve never worked on cleaning up your dog’s mouth, using this blend of ingredients from your kitchen is an easy place to start. Baking soda is a safe abrasive that helps remove plaque, and coconut oil has innate antimicrobial properties. Using gauze, a cotton round or a soft cloth, massage the mixture onto a tooth, starting with your dog’s upper molars (where most plaque accumulates). By cleaning one tooth a day you can desensitize your dog to the teeth polishing process and minimize stress.

You’ll find more recipes and tips to help you make healthier choices in The Forever Dog book, available for pre-order now: foreverdog.com/get-it-now/

There is a heat warning in effect for the City of Edmonton. Temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 29Β°C today until Friday. Never leave pets or children in hot vehicles, even with the A/C on.

Most of these reported incidents are for pets left alone in vehicles. Edmonton Fire Rescue Services can only intervene if the pet is displaying signs of distress:
β€’ Excessive panting or drooling
β€’ Non-responsiveness
β€’ Tired or lethargic behaviour
β€’ Dark pink or purple tongue
β€’ Actively trying to escape the vehicle

If you see an unattended pet in a vehicle on a hot day but they are not showing signs of overheating, please call 3-1-1 and Animal Care & Control will assist. Edmonton Police Service or ourselves will respond via 911 if there is an immediate risk to the pet's safety (see above).
