Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Association

Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Association There is a range of programming available for beginners all the way up to jumping lessons.

Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Association (WELCA) provides lesson horses for children, teens, and adults to the Edmonton community and surrounding areas to ride! For more than a decade, the Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Association (WELCA) has been quietly helping to develop people of strength and contributors to the Edmonton community. Through our equine-related activities, we will increase o

ur role in creating a better quality of life for all Edmontonians. WELCA provides easy access for anyone wishing to discover the joys of equine activities, and those who wish to rekindle their love for horses. Our centrally located services help young urban people develop self-confidence and self-esteem, and our horses are instrumental in providing therapeutic services for people living with mental health issues or diseases such as multiple sclerosis. We provide learning opportunities for students of all ages, whether it is veterinarian studies or learning an equine sport. And we help urbanites gain a better understanding of life on a horse farm, right in the heart of the city. We make all this possible using our own herd of horses and some which are loaned to us. WELCA’s learning centre provides programs to approximately 1,000 visitors each week. Our different horse riding programs and instructions are available at various levels to the general public, school groups, and people with disabilities. The completion of our new equine learning centre affords opportunities for more Edmontonians and people from all over the world can come to study horses and learn about their special relationship with people. The new facility has been developed on our existing site on Fox Drive, and is integrated into the beautiful heritage setting of the Keillor Farm. Our new facility allows us to help even more Edmontonians, and allows us to continue our mission of contributing to a stronger community, locally and globally.

We are extremely saddened to share the passing of the most gentlemanly lesson horse, Steel.

Steel was a distinguished grey gelding born in October 1994. In his youth he was extremely competitive and even up until he came to WELCA was competing in the 3’6” jumpers.

In 2014 he joined the WELCA lesson herd. He was always such a sweet and kind horse to interact with on the ground, though it was a struggle to help him stay sound for the first few years. The wonderful vets at West Wind Veterinary were pivotal in helping to get him comfortable and able to work- which he loved!

Steel was always eager to rise to the challenge and put his best foot forward every lesson. His love for work was infectious and as a rider, you couldn’t help but feel his joy- even his movement had an upbeat energy. In fact, it sometimes became difficult to stop him once he got going!

Steel did it all: from therapeutic riding with Little Bits, introducing beginners to the fun of horses in camps or Learn to Ride lessons, teaching students to canter, or doing a dressage pattern with the more advanced riders.

He always seemed to have a ‘prim and proper’ type of attitude and was a steadfast rule-follower. He was known as a gentleman before he came to WELCA and remained that way for the rest of his life. He was a gentle soul and was always at the bottom of whichever group of horses he was with- he always did much better with similarly-minded horses!

Of course no horse is without their quirks- Steel had a habit of becoming impatient when the level of service was not up to his standards and would bang relentlessly on the door when hay was not immediately in front of him or if he had been left alone longer than he deemed appropriate. That familiar sound echoing through the stables will be now missed.

Thank you Steel for all that you have done. We are so lucky for the time that we had with you and know that you will be missed by all that knew you. May you forever roam greener pastures.
