Static would like to wish everyone a Happy International Cat Day! 😻🐱🐈🐈‍⬛

Cats are amazing and sometimes weird little creatures, full of personality and love. If you own a cat, then you know they actually own you! Today we celebrate and take a moment to appreciate all our feline friends (AKA the Kings and Queens of the house) that rule our hearts! 💗
Drop a photo of your cat(s) in the comments below and mention something you love about them! 😸

✨️IMPORTANT INFO FOR THOSE WHO TRAVEL WITH THEIR DOG(S) TO THE U.S.✨️

As you may have heard, starting on August 1st, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

This is for every dog traveling into the U.S. even if you are driving! These forms must be filled out within 30 days of entering the U.S. and must be signed off by a CFIA vet (appointment needed at the CFIA office).

You can use the following link to access a check list of exactly what is needed for travel and when things need to be done here: https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/dogs-entering-us-after-august-1.html -risk

We would like to reintroduce everyone to another friendly face you may find in reception, our Veterinary Medical Assistant Rosa! Rosa has been with our team for a number of years and bounces between helping us in the back of the clinic with patient care and helping to cover reception. Rosa’s level of experience and compassion combined with her ability to take on many roles in the clinic is integral to us providing a high level of patient care.

We are so fortunate to have someone as amazing as Rosa on our team and would like to take the time to thank her!

Next up we would like to highlight our newest receptionist Monica! Many of you have already had the pleasure of meeting Monica and if you haven’t yet, we guarantee you and your pets will love her.

Monica came to us with over 10 years in the animal industry including experience with the Edmonton Humane Society. She is extremely kind and compassionate and helps to keep an air of calmness in what can be a very busy clinic. We are so grateful Monica decided to join our reception team and join us in thanking her for all of her hard work!

In honour of Veterinary Receptionist week, we want to take the time to highlight our amazing Veterinary Reception team and assistants.

First up we would like to thank our amazing head Receptionist Deanne! Deanne is integral to our team and has the extremely difficult job of balancing the needs of our patients while trying to keep our veterinary team on time - this is no small feat! Her amazing ability to stay calm, cool, and organized while maintaining a high level of compassion is a trait we all admire. We don’t know what we would do with Deanne’s hard work and expertise.

Let’s all take the time to thank Deanne for everything she does for all of us - staff and clients of South Side!

🐣EASTER WEEKEND CLOSURE REMINDER🐣

Just a reminder that the clinic will be closed this Friday March 29th and Saturday March 30th for Easter, and will reopen during our regular hours on Monday April 1st.

We would also like to remind clients who may be gifting flowers this weekend of the dangers of Lilies around Kitties! Keep your loved ones Kitties safe (or your own) by using these infographics to identify toxic lilies that could be in your easter flowers! Contact with ANY part of these plants can cause kidney failure and death. Remember to research the flowers you bring into your home or gift to someone you love to keep our animals safe!

Alert: While there have been no documented cases of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) in Canada, it's important to stay informed about the respiratory illness that is affecting canines in some areas of the United States.

Although the situation is currently confined to the U.S., we encourage Canadian pet owners to be aware and cautious. Diagnostic testing in the U.S. has not yet confirmed the cause of this respiratory illness, but we can take proactive steps to keep your dogs safe.

🛡️ Preventive Measures for Your Dog: Please see below for a few advisories we recommend for helping reduce the risks of canine respiratory exposure and sickness. If traveling to or from the United States, consider reducing your dog's interaction with other canines.

Hey South Side People - Jack here! I’m Dr Heather’s baby and I thought I should let you all know about my experiences with our amazing groomer Darlie of Pawlished Pets.

Mom says I need to get bathed and groomed every 8 weeks to help keep my skin and coat healthy and happy. It’s hard for me to keep my beautiful hair from knotting up even though I am young and spend lots of time grooming myself. (And I still love when my mom brushes me every night.).

Mom also says I need to learn that grooming is a safe experience when I am young. I’m kind of scared of the blow dryer but you can see that Darlie gives me a big hug to make it less scary. She is training for her Fear Free Grooming certificate you know!

And look how smooth and sleek I look after my groom! My mom says I smell so good too. And now my sister Hazel is starting to come for grooming too so she can be as beautiful as me.

Darlie has some availability this week so please phone to book your fur-babies in for a groom!

🐾OCTOBER IS RVT MONTH!🐾

This is part three of our How to become an RVT series!

Today we will highlight all of the different job opportunities that you can have as a Registered Veterinary Technologist, as well as all the areas of medicine you can specialize in!

When most people hear that you're a Vet, RVT or work in Veterinary Medicine, they automatically assume you work with Cats and Dogs! Most people are surprised to learn of all the different environments we are qualified to work in!

As an RVT small animal clinics are only the tip of the iceberg! We can work with livestock in rural large animal practices or with the Government in food and research animals, we can work with exotics and wildlife at a rehab, zoo or exotics practice and we can even work for pet food or medical supply companies! Each area outside of the small amimal world usually requires additional education and skillset that is either offered in a course, continuing education or just hands on experience! The possibilities are endless!

Many RVT's have certain area's of medicine that they love! This can spark a interest in pursuing a specialty in that area! Each specialty requires a specific set of rules to obtain, you will need years experience in the specific area you pick, as well as hours of continuing education in that area! Once all the requirements are met there is usually an exam to follow before you can earn your specialty title. For more info on VTS follow the link here! https://rvtcareernavigator.ca/vts/

🐾OCTOBER IS RVT MONTH!🐾

This is the second part of out How to become an RVT post!

To become a Registered Veterinary Technician you need to go through at least 2 years of schooling in an accredited program! Many RVT's have also completed extra years of college to gain more knowledge in areas like Research or Wildlife Medicine!

Once you make it through your schooling and graduate, you need to complete one more final exam! The Veterinary Technician National Exam or the 'VTNE' for short is one of the last big steps before you can apply to your province for full membership! This exam is a standardized test that encompasses a ton of multiple choice questions from all areas of study, from drug calculations to anatomy and everything in between! This test is challenging and requires months of prep time!

Once you pass, the final step is the easiest! Applying to your province's governing body! In Alberta the Alberta Veterinary Technologist Association - ABVTA oversees all the Technologists in Alberta! Once registered you need to uphold good standing in the organization and work world to keep your title, and also complete anywhere from 15-20 hours of Continuing Education (CE) each year to ensure you are keeping up to date with the latest medical research and practices!

If you have any questions about schooling, the VTNE or keeping up with your registration, leave them in a comment down below!

Our Story

South Side Animal Hospital is one of Edmonton's longest-standing practices and is proud to be one of only a few clinics in the Edmonton area to achieve accreditation from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). We believe in practicing high quality medicine but also pride ourselves on being a welcoming, approachable, and compassionate clinic. We want you and your pets to become a part of our family.

In 1952, classmates Dr. Jack McManus and Dr. Gordon Nimmons established South Side Animal Hospital as the first small animal practice in south Edmonton. They decided that in order to become a higher quality practice they should voluntarily undergo accreditation with the American Animal Hospital Association starting in 1964. This was above the mandatory provincial accreditation to maintain a veterinary practice in Alberta. They also became actively involved in the Edmonton Association of Small Animal Veterinarians, Edmonton Veterinarians Emergency Clinic, and various other community groups.

Dr. Heather Steele first came to South Side Animal Hospital as an owner when her cat Sasha needed treatment for ear mites. She found the clinic to be knowledgeable, friendly, and caring and decided to do her third year summer practicum for veterinary medicine at South Side under Dr. Ed Neufeld. Dr. Neufeld helped build her love of small animal medicine and when the opportunity arose to come and work with Dr. Neufeld as a veterinarian, she happily accepted. Upon Dr. Neufeld’'s retirement, Dr. Steele became the clinic owner and director in 2006. She and her team of dedicated animal health professionals have stayed true to South Side's long standing vision for the highest standard of care, strong professional and community involvement, and an approachable, family-focused practice with excellent customer service.
