Hi! My name is Calliope, but my friends call me 'Callie'

I am a 10 month old female who is looking for a like minded individual to share active adventures with. Take me hiking, running, biking, and we will get along fine!

I love other dogs and could play, play, play all day. During my play groups I am typically the instigator for play and do need to be reminded to take a break here and there. My previous past time was the chuck-it ball and playing 'catch me if you can' with my humans. Since being in care, I am on a ball 'detox' and learning better recall habits with structured hikes on a long line and recall games in the yard.

My foster mom says I am a very smart girl and keen to learn. I arrived with basic obedience training down pat and am a curious, confident lady. Being a puppy, I do require a human who can provide me with a lot of exercise and mental stimulation and likely will for years to come. Since being in care, my foster mom has been working on my 'Come' command, walking on the head harness and she says I have a beautiful 'Heel', no 'Jumping Up', and waiting at doorway entrys until released.

I come crate trained, previously lived with cats without issue, good with dogs, and kids.

Callie will come spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated. All adopters must agree not to use any punitive training methods including, but not limited to, leash corrections, pinning, alpha rolls, etc.

Apply to adopt Callie by submitting our adoption application at https://adoptadobe.com/adoption-application/. All adoptions require a home visit or Zoom walk thru prior to finalization.

🐾 Meet Nyx! 🐾

🐶 Breed: Doberman

🎂 Age: 5 years

🏡 Location: Red Deer, AB

🐾 Personality: Sweet, playful, curious, independent and obedient

🐾 Likes: Comfortable dog bed, balling up blankets to make a pillow, bacon Benebone Y bones, FETCH (but best as a solo activity, as she can get a little intense), children

🐾 Dislikes: Flooring transitions, inside stairs, being an only dog. Nyx can be SELECTIVE with other dogs

🏡 Ideal Home: Experienced owner. Active home who will play fetch with her, take her on walks/runs, and work her brain. She did not like being alone for long periods of time in a previous home, so someone who works from home would be ideal, although she has been fine left with another well-matched dog

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family: Gentle and protective of children, would prefer a home with a confident male large-breed dog, no cats or small animals as she has a high prey drive

🐶 Health: She is on a non-prescription thyroid supplement, so suggest continuing this and intermittently testing thyroid levels. Her canine teeth are also ground down from chewing tennis balls.

🌟 Adoption Fee: $500

Nyx has been spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated. All adopters must agree not to use any punitive training methods including, but not limited to, leash corrections, pinning, alpha rolls, etc.

Apply to adopt Nyx by submitting our adoption application at https://adoptadobe.com/adoption-application/. All adoptions require a home visit prior to finalization.

Millie is looking for some playmates in South Edmonton or Sherwood Park to help her work on her social skills! She is a bit of a Tarzan and can be leash reactive, but she has a positive play history with other dogs off leash. Please reach out if you have a social large breed dog who might want to play with Miss Millie, and we will connect you with her family!

I never let dogs meet for more than 3 seconds at first. Here’s a post about it!

WHEN SECONDS COUNT

This post is not advocating that dogs meet every other dog, but about how to go about it, if and when it does happen, in a safer way.

The 3 second rule for dogs meeting each other is used as a guideline to help foster positive introductions, prevent either dog from feeling overwhelmed or trapped and prevent any potential reactivity and stress.

A short 3 second introduction is enough time to provide important information to both dogs.

Enough information for dogs to know – “are you a threat?”, “do I like you?”, “do I want to learn more about you?”, “do I really dislike you?”, “do I need you to go away?” etc. Both dogs may not feel the same way – one may not be happy to engage while the other may want to.

All interactions should ideally happen like this, not just initially. Just like us, dogs can have off days – things like pain, trigger stacking, lack of sleep or a host of other reasons can influence whether a dog wants to interact or not.

There are countless times I have witnessed meetings or introductions between dogs that have gone on just a few seconds too long and have not ended well. This can have long lasting effects on future behaviour when meeting other dogs.

Understanding body language is critically important. If we are going to share our lives with another species, protect them, advocate for them and help them feel safe, then we need to understand and respect their language.

The examples in this post of red and green flags are just a few general ones to look out for – there are many more and these will differ depending on the individual dog, context and circumstances.

Here are some resources and links to learn more about body language -

Make sure those first 3 seconds count – they can make all the difference.

Poor Asher is in boarding again and desperately needs an experienced foster (preferably foster-to-adopt) home! Unfortunately he has been in 4 different homes since September, so we need someone willing to stick things out and work with us and any issues that may come up. Before coming to us, Asher lived in a boarding kennel for over a year while his owner was out of the country, so we do not want him to have to stay at a kennel long term. He is not reactive to dogs or humans, but will do best with a large female dog in the home. He walks well on leash and is okay with indoor cats. He has started on crate training and is good there for a couple hours. He is not destructive but will counter surf when alone sometimes. He is fairly muzzle trained. Asher was bitten by a dog who was guarding a bone about a month ago, requiring surgery, and recently got into a fight with the dog in his last foster home, we think over horse manure, so foster home will have to manage high value items to prevent resource guarding. He has good bite inhibition and has never punctured another dog or human while in our care. He cannot go to a home with children. Asher needs someone who can read dog body language well and who has a basic understanding of dog behavior and rewards-based training. If you’d like to donate to his boarding which is $35 a day, please visit adoptadobe.com/donate and put “Asher” in the message field. You can also donate directly through this post!
