1) Stay home and indoors (preferably the basement if comfortable there)
2) Keep windows and curtains closed
3) Play music or have the TV on for distraction

There has been alot of attention in the media lately about a potentially new respiratory disease in dogs.

Dr. Scott Weese, a veterinarian specializing in infectious diseases, has provided some guidelines and will continue to monitor the situation carefully as more testing and information emerges. The important points are:

-ensure your pet is up-to-date on the more common but potentially serious respiratory diseases, Bordetella and Parainfluenza.
-avoiding contact with large groups of dogs and/or dogs with unknown health or vaccine status.
-limiting contact to small groups of the same healthy dogs when walking or at daycare will be lower risk.

With an increase of thunderstorms over the past few weeks we wanted to take a moment to talk about thunderstorm anxiety.

Many pets experience stress and anxiety related to thunderstorms, however there are many ways to help decrease their stress levels. November is recognized as Pet Diabetes Awareness Month.

Diabetes is a disease that affects both dogs and cats, in which the pancreas does not produce adequate amounts of insulin. Without proper insulin levels, the body cannot convert sugar/glucose in the blood stream into energy, causing a rise in blood glucose levels.

Symptoms to watch for include increased thirst and urination, weight loss, weakness and lethargy.

Most commonly insulin injections are used to bring the glucose levels back to within a normal range and control the symptoms that present with diabetes. In addition to regular insulin injections, diet plays a big part in diabetic management, particularly in cats. Since diabetes can change over time routine blood and urine screening along with regular blood glucose curves are essential to ensure proper management of the disease.
