Did you know that October is National Veterinary Technologist Month? Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) are essential professionals in the veterinary profession, contributing immensely to the health and safety of animals. RVTs play a key role in ensuring the safety and health of our beloved pets and livestock, from the tiniest little mouse to the furry, feathered, hooved and scaled.

We send out a huge Thank You to our RVTs Abbie, Brittany, Shawna and Dianne. We also want to acknowledge our wonderful tech assistants Sam, Brianna and Chyanne. We sure couldn't help pets everyday with out these wonderful team members.

It's Friday the 13th!!

Just like walking under a ladder, crossing paths with a black cat or breaking a mirror, many people hold fast to the belief that Friday the 13th brings bad luck. Though it’s uncertain exactly when this particular tradition began, negative superstitions have swirled around the number 13 for centuries.

However we believe that black dogs and cats bring us GOOD luck and we want to see yours. Please feel free to share photos and stories of your beloved black coated family members!! We can't wait to see all of their faces!

Baby Willow was in this week for her kitten boosters and stole everyone's hearts. She is a confident little girl who loves to snuggle!

Willow wants to remind you that with the current air quality and temperatures, keep your four-legged friends indoors as much as you can! Try adding some ice cubes to their water dishes or adding water to their kibble for extra hydration during these extreme temperatures!

It's hot out there 🌞and dogs don't sweat, and therefore cool down, the same way we do. Heatstroke is a life threatening condition that can cause lethargy, weakness, collapse and even death! While we take precautions to keep our pets cool in the extreme heat, it is important to know the signs.

Fortunately, heatstroke can be prevented, and if caught early, it is reversible. An overheated dog is an emergency, and even if you are able to cool the dog down, you should seek medical treatment from a veterinarian.

We are in our second week of record breaking heat 🥵, with many more days ahead of us. We wanted to provide some tips on keeping your dogs safe this summer.

🐾 Exercise dogs only in the late evening or early morning, when it is cooler. All dogs can quickly overheat in these temperatures, especially brachycephalic, or short nosed breeds.
🐾 Check the temperature of the sidewalk or sand. If it is hot to the touch then it is too hot for a dog to walk on.
🐾 Make sure dogs can get to shade and fresh water at all times.
🐾 Provide kiddie pools, frozen kongs, frozen puzzle games and sprinklers to keep them cool and provide mental enrichment.
🐾 Do not run or cycle with your dogs when it is hot.
🐾 Know the signs of heat stroke. We will provide another post with sign to look for if you think your pet may be showing signs of over heating.

Effective August 1st, there are new rules for travelling from Canada 🇨🇦 to the USA 🇺🇸 with dogs. We are learning as much as we can so that we can prepare pet owners for travel, however, the CFIA is actively engaging with the USA CDC to discuss and clarify these new requirements. At this time, the process and documents needed for dogs travelling from Canada to the USA have not been finalized
What do we know for sure?

Age - All dogs must be 6 months of age or older. No puppies under the age of 6 months will be allowed to cross the border.

Microchip - All dogs that travel across the US border must be identified with an ISO microchip. If you intend to travel to the USA and your dog has not been microchipped, they will need one.

Rabies Vaccine - Please ensure that your dog's rabies vaccine is up to date. If your dog was vaccinated before the ISO microchip was administered, they may need another vaccination.

Canada Day is just around the corner! River Valley Vet will be open on June 29th 2024 8:30am-5:30pm, closed on June 30th 2024 and closed on July 1st 2024. We will be open again for regular hours (8am-6pm) on Tuesday, July 2nd 2024.
