We are so excited for our upcoming social event at Elite Dog Centre on December 14th in the evening. Get your team of 2 together, gather your supplies & let's see those amazing gingerbred dog-houses!

This is a no cost event to our current clients, but pre-registration is required as space is limited. Donations will be accepted towards the care of our wonderful dogs in care for rehabilitation and rehoming. We are not a rescue and not affiliated with a rescue. We do however take transfers from other rescues that they feel need additional training and assistance before they find homes. These dogs are solely supported by us, we are not paid by the other rescues to provide this service to the dogs they transfer to us.

🐾TRAINING TIP THURSDAY🐾

How is your dog supposed to know what you want when you are not providing clear communication because your are struggling with your own movement❓

Many trainers will say that training the dog is the easy part, it is training the human that is the hard part. Keeping that consistency and clear communication.

So when you are fumbling in your movements to ask the dog for certain skills this can confuse the dog, and makes training very inconsistent.

Have you ever tried to flow through the movements of an obedience training session without your dog? You may feel silly at first but muscle memory for your own movement can help things flow, providing clearer communication for your dog, which in turn keeps things more consistent.

Try it - put that treat in your hand as if you were luring or being ready to reward your dog & move through some movements: Come, Heel, Sit, Down,... whatever you want to play with and see how fluid your own movement is. How if your own flow and movement while luring new movements, for example maybe a middle from a front sit position, or a heel from a front sit position?

Wonder if we should start a movement class where there are no dogs and we just work on human movement and direction? 🤔

Dog anxiety is real! Does your dog have anxiety?

Have you canceled plans because of your dogs anxiety? 🐕

As we move into holiday season dog boarding facilities will quickly start filling up. For some dogs being in a boarding situation may cause great anxiety. For other families they may miss out on family gatherings because of concerns about their dogs anxiety.
On the other side of this the busy household may be the trigger for your dogs anxiety.

There is help out there! We have worked with out clients vets closely in figuring out the right plan of action when the opportunity arises with anxious dog needing boarding. Here are some other things that we do to try and make those dogs stay less stressful:
❤Meet & Greet visit is no charge with our staff.
❤Recommend a few day visits in either daycare or day training to get comfortable with the facility, staff & knowing they are not being abandoned by their family.
❤50% OFF a one-night trial stay.
❤Options for customization of their stay. Adding on enrichment activities, training, exercise, scent work, and sporting activities. Selecting the appropriate boarding placement, which could be near other dogs or in their own private room you can set up to resemble home a little more.
❤Play set up based on their needs. This may be individual, just one buddy, small group play or bigger group play.

All staff are also trained in K9 CPR & Emergency First Aid, as well as Advanced K9 Emergency First Aid. Extra one on one time can be provided & we always keep an eye on overall health & vital signs for early detection.

When was your dogs last Wellness Exam with a Veterinarian?

Dogs are very stoic and we often do not know that there is a problem until it is pretty bad. An annual Wellness Exam is a great way of catching problems before they get too far. Discuss with your veterinarian what needs to be checked.

Having bloodwork done routinely can also help get a better picture about what is going on with your dog that you cannot see. Early diagnosis increases the odds for recovery.

Dogs that are 7+ years old are considered seniors and should be getting a Wellness Exam done every 6 months. Health can deteriorate very quickly for senior dogs which is why more routine visits are a great way to discover problems early.

PLUS, keep records of your dogs baseline vital signs. You should be taking their vitals every 3 - 6 months and recording it. This can help you notice changes sooner, and then get them in for a check up early is needed. Want to learn more about taking your dogs vital signs properly? Join us for Canine Health Canada 's K9 CPR & Emergency First Aid Course on November 30th. Contact [email protected] for more information & to sign up.

Did you know that Scent Work can help reduce anxiety & stress for your dog?

Through luring, shaping & positive reinforcement our scent classes teach the dogs the game of scent work. This gives them something to focus on that is fun and exciting, which also builds their confidence.

There is so much you can do with scent work from mental enrichment, to sport, to dog jobs. Certified Trainer, Jenn, has extensive experience training scent in service dogs. Teaching medical alerts for food allergies, to histamine flare ups, to migraine detection, to anxiety and stress, and the list goes on.

Do you know why a dogs tongue widens❓

The primary way that a dog eliminates heat is via the mouth. The dogs tongue will widen and hang further out of their mouth in an effort to expand the surface area when they are getting hotter. The larger surface area expels more heat.

Dogs can still experience heat stroke in the winter months. We often think if this as a summer risk, but when indoors with our heaters going dogs can still experience heat stroke.

If you notice this happening ensure that you are keeping a close eye on your dog for other signs of heat stroke, which may include:
🐾bright red gums or tongue
🐾dry mucous membranes
🐾excessive drooling
🐾elevated heart rate
🐾heavy panting/rapid breathing
🐾unstable balance

Seek Veterinarian attention immediately if you suspect Heat Stroke.
