Hey everyone!
Just a friendly reminder: spring and fall are typically the most common times that we see fleas and lice on our pups. Pests can occur to any dog, regardless of how clean or well groomed they are. Animals can pick these critters up by simply hanging out on the grass in your backyard. However, your companion will be at a higher risk if they attend public dog parks, boarding facilities, or doggy daycare. (In fact, the majority of the cases I've encountered were on dogs who had just been picked up from the boarders)
There are plenty of natural and conventional methods of helping to prevent and alleviate these pests, but checking your pups often and paying close attention to any minor changes in behavior (such as itching, licking, head shaking, etc) will be your first class ticket to preventing infestations.
As per my policies, if your pet is found to have fleas, lice, or ticks during their visit, the grooming will stop immediately and you will be called to pick up your pup. There will also be a clean up/fumigation fee incurred.

Did you know that pet grooming is a completely unregulated industry? There is no requirement for formal education, no required continuing education, and no required testing or certification?

Anyone and everyone can just pick up a pair of clippers and start advertising themselves as a groomer and charge people for a service they aren’t trained to perform.

It’s completely up to you, the owner, to do your research and make sure the person you are trusting with the health and safety of your pet is qualified to care for them.

Every groomer should be trained, and that very basic training takes months.

It takes years to truly master the ins and outs of grooming and everything that goes along with it.

Pet grooming is so much more than just a hair style.

*It’s knowing dog behavior and how to safely handle all the different personalities and quirks.

*It’s recognizing health conditions that would be better suited seeing a vet such as skin or ear infections.

*It’s being prepared for any and all emergencies that can happen, from seizures to allergic reactions, to nicks and cuts and quicked toenails without panicking.

*It’s knowing how to best deal with a variety of coat types properly.

*It’s being able to know when to stop a service on a particular dog due to behavior or health.

*It’s having the knowledge and patience to handle a different species while holding razor sharp clippers or 8 inch long scissors.

At the very least, the groomer you use should seek out continuing education to make sure they are current on the changes in the industry, from upgrades in products to tools that make the process easier for the pet and them.

They should be current on their pet cpr/first aid certification which needs repeated every couple of years.

They should be able to answer your grooming related questions with knowledge and confidence and if they don’t know the answer they should know where to find it.

They should have an emergency plan in place with a local veterinarian in case anything happens, because when working with animals it’s not a matter of if something happens, but when.

They should come recommended by other pet owners and pet professionals.

And it’s worth noting that there is nothing wrong with using a groomer that is still in training, but they should be working alongside an experienced groomer and under their direct supervision.

Ask the questions, after all you are paying them for a service. A groomer who has spent time and money to be as educated as possible is excited to share their knowledge!

Please do not leave your pet inside your vehicle during heat waves. Regardless of whether it's running or not.... anything can happen.

Only halfway through July, our fire crews have been dispatched to 59 events involving people or pets left unattended in vehicles. This number was 63 through the entire month of July last year.

With extreme heat returning this week, we urge Edmontonians to reconsider travel plans if there is a possibility that a child or pet may be left alone in a vehicle, even for a moment.

Visit edmontonpolice.ca/KidsInCars for further safety tips from our Edmonton Police Service partners.

Truth!

Truth!

The facts

🔸A dog can pull more comfortably in a harness - but harnesses do not cause pulling

🔸Pulling isn't about what you have on the dog - it's about the dog's motivation

🔸Pulling can often occur because of unmet needs

🔸Longer leashes = less pulling (almost instantly sometimes)

🔸Aversive tools do not always stop pulling (but they are likely to be causing more damage to your dog than a well-fitting harness)

Do you struggle with your dog pulling you?

Aversive tools are devices used to decrease unwanted behaviour in an animal using physical and/or emotional discomfort via the use of positive punishment. Examples include: prong collars, choke collars, shock collars, slip leads, martingales, and even misused leashes and flat collars.

Positive punishment is defined as adding something a dog finds unpleasant or scary to decrease a behavior.

Imagine a dog is out for a walk while wearing a prong collar, and he begins to pull on-leash and/or a correction is applied by the handler. If this happens while he is looking at another dog, he may stop pulling toward this other dog because of the pain and discomfort the prong collar is causing. However, he is also making a negative association with the other dog ("that dog caused me pain"), and potentially many other stimuli observed or experienced while the punishment was applied, even if that was not the intended association.

The more this happens, the more likely the dog will become increasingly concerned about other dogs and environmental stimuli while wearing the prong collar. This could start with slight worry, and possibly lead to full-blown leash reactivity: barking, growling, and lunging.

This is how something as simple as pulling on-leash can evolve into more severe behaviour concerns. What started as innocent excitement or frustration from not being able to socialize with the other dog has now turned into an even bigger behavioural concern, resulting from pain, fear and anxiety.

Positive punishment can decrease and suppress behaviour; that is why it works! That’s not the argument. But the side effects and consequences are plenty. Increased fear and fear-related aggression, inadvertent and unintended negative associations, damage to the human-animal bond, and it also leads to apathetic learners.

You can see how positive punishment slows down an animal’s learning!

So, while aversive tools appear to work on a surface level, remember the possible costs to you and your pet before using them.

Friendly Reminder!

*I'm going to be completely transparent here: I had to jump hoops to get approved for my home small business license the last 2 years! There are many little rules that I must adhere to, and 1 important rule being that the business must not disrupt my neighbors. I have been noticing a lot of male dogs going over and urinating on my neighbors flower beds while under their guardians control. I kindly ask that you not allow your pup to wander into my neighbors yards during drop off and pick up. (The tree and little fence separating our yards is totally fine!)

*Additionally, I would like to note that our back yard is Off Limits for multiple reasons, including for the safety of your dog. Please be respectful of our home. 🙏
