Commonly called Favia in the hobby, these are actually Dipsastraea — and when two closely related colonies meet, something beautiful happens.
Instead of fighting, they grow side by side, maintaining distinct boundaries without aggression. As they expand, their skeletal structures create a zig-zag seam — a phenomenon known as “zippering.”
This isn’t coral warfare — it’s peaceful coexistence with a twist. Both colonies continue growing wherever space allows, often right up against each other. Over time, they begin to push upward and outward, forming elegant curved ridges as the faster grower slowly extends over the other.
Swipe to see this natural negotiation in action — where coral growth meets architectural beauty.
