It's hot out there ๐ŸŒžand dogs don't sweat, and therefore cool down, the same way we do. Heatstroke is a life threatening condition that can cause lethargy, weakness, collapse and even death! While we take precautions to keep our pets cool in the extreme heat, it is important to know the signs.

Fortunately, heatstroke can be prevented, and if caught early, it is reversible. An overheated dog is an emergency, and even if you are able to cool the dog down, you should seek medical treatment from a veterinarian.

Have fun out there, but stay cool!! ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐Ÿ‰

We are in our second week of record breaking heat ๐Ÿฅต, with many more days ahead of us. We wanted to provide some tips on keeping your dogs safe this summer.

๐Ÿพ Exercise dogs only in the late evening or early morning, when it is cooler. All dogs can quickly overheat in these temperatures, especially brachycephalic, or short nosed breeds.
๐Ÿพ Check the temperature of the sidewalk or sand. If it is hot to the touch then it is too hot for a dog to walk on.
๐Ÿพ Make sure dogs can get to shade and fresh water at all times.
๐Ÿพ Provide kiddie pools, frozen kongs, frozen puzzle games and sprinklers to keep them cool and provide mental enrichment.
๐Ÿพ Do not run or cycle with your dogs when it is hot.
๐Ÿพ Know the signs of heat stroke. We will provide another post with sign to look for if you think your pet may be showing signs of over heating.

Stay safe! And stay cool!

Effective August 1st, there are new rules for travelling from Canada ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ to the USA ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ with dogs. We are learning as much as we can so that we can prepare pet owners for travel, however, the CFIA is actively engaging with the USA CDC to discuss and clarify these new requirements. At this time, the process and documents needed for dogs travelling from Canada to the USA have not been finalized.
What do we know for sure?

Age - All dogs must be 6 months of age or older. No puppies under the age of 6 months will be allowed to cross the border.

Microchip - All dogs that travel across the US border must be identified with an ISO microchip. If you intend to travel to the USA and your dog has not been microchipped, they will need one.

Rabies Vaccine - Please ensure that your dog's rabies vaccine is up to date. If your dog was vaccinated before the ISO microchip was administered, they may need another vaccination.

We will update everyone as we know more, but we encourage all dog owners who travel across the Canada/US border to please click the link below to follow the updates from the CFIA. https://inspection.canada.ca/en/animal-health/terrestrial-animals/exports/pets/united-states-america?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2davcnlhwrCRIRyFBShUmRxQlH_UfDdkUNCwu2X0yYJ6171liC501FAfo_aem_3dXZwydWFrtvrYj5OADHFg

We are learning more everyday so please call to get up to date information.

If you or someone you know would like to become my forever home or have questions about me please call the clinic at 780-475-9912.

Wishing you all a happy holiday season from our furry family to yours! :) Hope you get to celebrate with all your loved ones this year!

Just a friendly reminder that having guests over can be a big deal, especially to more reserved critters such as kitty cats and anxious dogs. Sudden changes to their space can be very stressful, as they are creatures of habit.

If youโ€™re expecting company during the holidays, consider that your pet may prefer a small, quiet space or a vacation of their own to a friend, family, or kennel where they will feel relaxed and happy!

For all those dog-lovers out there looking for a new furry friend, we are very excited to announce that we are partnering with the local rescue organization Alberta Homeward Hound Rescue Bureau () to provide health care for doggos in need so they can find their furever home with loving families!

This super sweet goofball named Arthur recently visited us for his neuter and he recovered fantastically with some snuggles from one of our assistants (Leah says he was the bestest boy!).

How does your canine pal tell you theyโ€™re in pain without saying the words, โ€œIโ€™m in painโ€? Hereโ€™s a few things to look for!
- Arthritic pain may present as limping, soreness, or stiffness before/during/after exercise or rest.
- Gastrointestinal pain might look like tenseness in their belly, decreased appetite, or drooling.
- Back pain can appear as facial changes (wrinkling of eyebrows, raising of lips when moving or adjusting positions) or faster breathing in certain positions, or when adjusting position, inability to get up or down, lack of interest in normal activities, decreased eating or drinking, or lack of awareness (wonโ€™t answer to their name or calls for attention).

Please know that an animal wonโ€™t typically alter its way of doing something for no reason (ie. Limping when walking, this usually means something hurts!)

Contact your clinic if you have any questions about signs of pain in your pet!

Why do we recommend spaying and neutering your pets?
-These procedures are for more than just population control! Not only can spaying and neutering stop roaming behaviours and unwanted socializing, but taking away these hormones controls against risks of life-threatening diseases, including some cancers!
-Contact us for more info on why we recommend these procedures!

08/10/2022

Dental disease can look like a lot of different things. Often, you may find that your pet isnโ€™t eating all of their meal like they would have normally, or you may see some grey/brown buildup on their teeth. They might develop some really stinky breath, and just like us, they can get gingivitis!
Enamel on their teeth can be severely worn down from chewing on bones and hard chews, which can lead to a painful mouth. Underbites and crowding, seen often in our flat-faced friends, also predisposes them to disease.
To help prevent the development and/or acceleration of dental disease, we strongly recommend tooth brushing combined with dental diets that are formulated for the overall health of your furry family member. Book a free dental consult with our technician team to get an idea of your individualโ€™s pet dental disease and for further recommendations!

08/03/2022

We donโ€™t fast our small friends for surgery for a couple reasons, but most importantly, the lack of food in their digestive track can cause what is called GI stasis. This means that the GI tract is slower to move or simply stops moving, which leads to bloating, discomfort, increased potential for intestinal twisting/accidents, and an imbalance of GI microbes - this can lead to complications and affect how these little guys recover from anesthesia. Typically, our pocket pets should visit our clinic with food in hand and readily available, this also helps during recovery as we can offer it while they wait to be picked up after their procedure!

Why is nail trimming important?

Overgrown nails can negatively affect an animalโ€™s ability to walk and run. Long toe nails can not only hinder locomotion, they can place undue stress on incorrect areas of the paw and leg which may result in tendon injuries and arthritis.

It's also a great way to ensure we are checking the nails routinely, in order to catch changes like fungal or bacterial infections that can show by weakening the nail. Catching these types of infections early is very important to help get resolution and prevent long term issues.

Self-trauma or trauma to fellow pets in the house is also at a much higher risk with longer, sharper nails.

Our pets rely on us to ensure they are happy and healthy! Nail trimming is a routine procedure that can be done at home, at a grooming salon or even at some veterinary clinics. There are many resources online about how to trim your petโ€™s nails!
