Mac came in for a dental cleaning a couple weeks ago. He had some tartar buildup, especially on the back molars, but his gums weren’t angry and his x-rays were clear. He did not need any extractions, just a good cleaning so now he is all ready to go with his toothbrush and toothpaste for at home oral care! Small dog breeds get tartar buildup at a much faster rate than their larger counterparts. Their smaller mouths means that the teeth have less room between them, making great extra hiding places for plaque bacteria to grow. Regular tooth brushing has helped Mac immensely, staving off the harsher effects of tartar build up. Mac is also on our dental wellness plan, making it easier for him to get the annual cleanings his little mouth needs to help keep healthy.

Attention clients! Due to the upcoming holidays, please consider placing your food and medication orders earlier than you normally would as there will be delays in getting our orders over the Christmas and New Years breaks. We are also closing early on Dec. 24th, and will be closed until opening on Dec. 27th. We are also closing early Dec. 31st and open again Jan. 2nd. We will post more reminders closer to the holidays, and our holiday hours.

Tuna came in to see us for a dental cleaning and had one small tooth that needed to be extracted. In these images you can see how much buildup there was on his upper carnassial tooth (the large cutting molar) and how the tartar had pushed on his gum line causing irritation and inflammation. After the cleaning, you can see that the gum is more irritated in the moment, but by removing the tartar we have removed the long-term irritant and his mouth should be feeling much better! Just like when we humans visit the dentist, our pets' mouths can feel funny after a dental, but this typically resolves in a couple of days. If there are extractions, however, we always recommend easing them into their regular diet slowly, and ideally after the sites have finished healing. Cute Tuna is now back to his normal spunky self!

Now that the snow is here to stay, we are enjoying the festive season! We have decorated and i’m not entirely sure what Missy thinks of it all! You may only see the decor we have up front, but we have non-breakable ornaments hung up around in the back treatment areas and offices too, and Missy has even taken up adding her own spin to the decor (usually that means knocking something over!) Thankfully the change in the weather has not stressed her out and so she seems to be taking the changes fairly well. We know that colder weather can be a big stressor for some of our patients, so please reach out if you are having any concerns with your pet. (and stay warm!)

Rudie came in to see us for a dental cleaning! He had some build up and crowded teeth that were the perfect hiding spaces for bad bacteria. We also found a lump behind his upper incisor teeth! The problem teeth were extracted, and the lump was removed and sent out for biopsy. Thankfully Rudie’s results were that the lump was just overly irritated gum tissue! This is likely from the plaque that was building up on his teeth, and is quite common in dogs and may have a genetic component. However, we always recommend biopsy for suspicious lumps so we do not miss any serious masses, like melanomas. Now little Rudie has a clean and healthy mouth and his extraction sites have healed nicely. We look forward to seeing Rudie for more routine check ups!

Missy sometimes finds the weirdest places to snooze, and then gets upset when we need her to move! Ideally we would leave her alone and let her nap, but when someone needs their shoes we have to move her :/. Sorry to make you grumpy Missy!

Senior pet’s metabolisms slow down and it can be harder for them to lose weight or to even keep weight on! Many diseases that affect their metabolism like kidney disease or thyroid issues, make it harder for them to regulate the various nutrients and hormones the body needs to sustain itself and function. Depending on the cause, this can lead to weight loss or weight gain as the body’s sense of balance is thrown off and it struggles to maintain equilibrium. Diagnosing these diseases early on means that we can catch these changes as early as possible, and can help your pet regain balance. To book a consultation with one of our veterinarians, call our clinic at (780)756-5070.

Caius came in for a dental cleaning and he had two very angry looking teeth! Caius had what are called Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions (FORL). The cause of these painful lesions has still not been fully identified, but sadly, even kitties with perfectly clean and healthy mouths can and do develop these painful lesions. While the red lump of angry, excess gum tissue over a part of the tooth is usually an indicator of a FORL, we cannot confirm the diagnosis or see how far it has progressed without an x-ray. In this x-ray image, we can clearly see the affected tooth looks like it is decaying, especially when compared to the neighbouring teeth. Unfortunately, the only solution, currently, is surgical removal of affected teeth. This is one of the many reasons why we include dental x-rays with our dental procedures, even for seemingly simple cleanings. Caius did really well and we look forward to seeing him again for his recheck!

As our pets age, their organs age as well, increasing the risk of developing various diseases. Early screening while your pet is still healthy gives us a baseline for comparison, and regular screenings afterwards helps us catch these changes as soon as possible. For many diseases, early diagnosis is key! Our Senior Programs are pre-built wellness screening bundles designed with this in mind. Call (780)756-5070 to book an appointment for your senior pet!

As goofy as Missy can be, as evidenced by last week's post, she is always a very sweet, elegant little lady. While she has her wild, quirky side, we are reminded of how regal cats can be (when they’re not being little goof balls!)

4 / 5 senior kitties will develop some degree of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This common ailment can be caught early with regular blood work, enabling early intervention. There are also now blood tests that can predict if your cat will develop CKD within the next 2 years, giving us even more lead time to step in! This is especially important, as many kitties with CKD are asymptomatic until the disease has already progressed into late stage kidney disease. Booking an exam for your senior kitty is easy, just give us a call at (780)756-5070!

Missy has all sorts of toys to play with and we try to interact with her through them as well, however, Missy is not the most playful of kitties. She may show mild interest then walk away or not show us any interest at all. Then one day by pure accident we found a toy that she absolutely adores! A simple string! If we wiggle and bounce the end around and have it race over her she will jump and run and try her best to grab at it! She will chase it through the whole clinic if you drag it behind you and will try to sneak up on you too. We are all happy to have found a way to play with her more and get her more exercise and mental stimulation, but it would have been nice to know a simple string was all we needed!

We are closed today for Remembrance Day. From animals that helped carry messages and wounded soldiers, to bomb-sniffers, guards, and morale boosters, we honour all those who have sacrificed their lives for peace.

We will resume normal hours tomorrow, the 12th.

Gnocchi is the last ‘Pasta’ kitten from Zoe’s that was also in to be fixed. She did really well for her spay surgery and was just as rambunctious as her brother, Rigatoni, but thankfully she settled post-surgery. While this kitty and her siblings have all found their forever homes, Zoe’s Animal Rescue has many more kittens and adult cats up for adoption. We see their critters on a regular basis as one of many clinics who provide Zoe’s with veterinary care. We wish we could take them all home when they come to visit, especially sweet ones like Gnocchi, but knowing that Zoe’s is finding them good homes makes it easier to say goodbye at the end of the day.
