Our lovely patient Holly has turned 15! Despite her arthritis, she still enjoys travelling with her family, and we get to see her on a monthly basis for arthritis injections. She is a very sweet dog, and while the needle pokes are not her favourite, she stands patiently for the injection and always says hi to all the staff she sees! Happy Birthday Holly, we all hope it is a wonderful year for you!

Did you know that dental disease can lead to certain heart diseases and other serious health issues? Bad oral infections easily permeate the thin skin of the gums and easily spreads through the blood to other organ systems. This means that Fido’s bad breath is more than just a smelly mouth. Daily tooth brushing and yearly cleanings help prevent your pet from developing certain illnesses. If you have any oral hygiene concerns for your pet, please reach out for a consultation at (780)756-5070.

Did you know that there are more ways to prevent dental issues than just brushing your pet's teeth? While the mechanical action of the brush is ideal, enzymatic action of toothpastes, water additives, and oral gels can also do wonders to help keep your pet’s mouth healthy! These bacteria destroying enzymes help keep the mouth a cleaner environment and slow down the formation of plaque and tartar. These are great alternatives to brushing for our face-shy or feisty pets.

“Malocclusion” refers to the improper alignment between the upper and lower dental arches. Overbites, underbites, crossbites, displaced teeth, and overcrowding all affect one's ability to bite, chew, and manoeuvre food. Malocclusions are caused by a variety of things from genetics and delayed tooth eruption, to improper foods, behaviours, dental disease, and facial trauma. Pictured stock footage examples (upper left to right to lower left to right): A small dog with an underbite, a dog with sideways-sitting upper premolars and carnassial teeth, a dog with an overbite, and and a cat with a retained deciduous (baby) canine tooth.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is important for all of us! Regular tooth brushing and dental cleanings are important to prevent dangerous bacteria from taking over and forming plaque and tartar (AKA calculus) These materials create rough textures and pockets against the teeth and gums that are perfect hiding spots for even more bacteria and acids to hide in, slowly degrading the teeth underneath! Prevention is key, with regular brushing, but sometimes pets need regular cleanings, just like we do! Call us to book a dental consultation today! (780)756-5070

Here are a few stock image examples of various stages of dental disease. The first image is of a small dog's mouth. The teeth are mostly white, however, the gum line is red and angry and there is some tartar along the gum line on the canine tooth. However, the gums are not as angry as in image 2. This cat’s gums are very angry and sore looking. This individual is also missing a few lower incisors and some tartar can be seen on the back Right upper carnassial (left on this image; note the brownish discolouration of the tooth.) Image 3 shows another kitty’s upper carnassial. The tartar (sometimes also called calculus) is creating extra surface texture for more plaque bacteria to hang onto and grow. This tartar, which is mineralized plaque bacteria, grows and pushes against other teeth and the gum line causing damage and pain. This also contributes to gum line recession, which we see in image 4, where this dog has a lot of hard and discoloured tartar which has caused the gums to recede so far up that we can see his roots! (the space between where his gums should be, the green line, and where his gums are, the red line. Though note that the teeth are also falling out of this dogs head) Daily oral care helps prevent our pets' teeth from getting to this stage.

Missy’s advice: A grand stretch is the best way to get back into the day after a nap! Even if that means you become a blurry photo for your fans! Get up and stretch every so often to keep your muscles healthy and remember to take many cat naps!

Little Missy gets to keep her toe beans all warm and cozy this winter, though sadly she doesn’t have them all. While it is no longer legal to do so, Missy had previously been declawed on the front feet, so she uses a litter that doesn’t bother her sensitive feet. Some outdoor kitties have lost toes and other parts of their bodies like ears and noses, and in some cases have lost their lives due to frostbite. Having been a stray herself, she can empathize with the city's stray cat population. If you see any pets outside in the extreme cold, or in any medical distress, please call the city to have ACCC (Animal Care and Control Centre) pick them up. Please keep your pets inside in the winter, and ensure that barn cats have access to indoor space, food, fresh water, and heating.

Microchips are grain of rice sized devices that are implanted under the skin of an animal. They are NOT GPS trackers and you cannot get live tracking data from them. However, vet clinics, rescues, and the city are able to scan pets for a microchip and pull up your provided information! Microchipping your pet and keeping your chip information up-to-date brings lost pets home. Hundreds of dogs and cats are lost every year, and microchips help reunite you with your beloved pet. We offer microchipping and basic registration services. (780)756-5070
