Bird flu has been in the news a lot in the last couple of years and there is a concerning increase in the number of cases affecting both pets and people. Cats seem to be particularly susceptible to the disease and it is most often fatal for them. Most affected cats have been fed a raw food diet and have been infected by eating raw chicken, turkey, or duck. Raw milk has also been shown to carry the virus as dairy cows are suffering from widespread infection in the US. The risk in dogs seems to be less clear but one dog has been reported dying of the disease after chewing on a infected bird. As such we recommend staying away from feeding any raw meat to your pets. If your pets are already on a raw food diet we recommend switching to cooked meats or a commercially prepared diet. If you have questions or concerns please call the clinic.
