The Peace Region is experiencing another summer heatwave 🌞⛱️ A reminder the keep our furry friends cool and safe ❤️

Warning signs of heatstroke

Heavy panting and difficulty breathing

Excessively drooling

The dog appears lethargic, drowsy or uncoordinated

Collapsed or vomiting

What to do if you see a dog exhibiting excessive heat related symptoms:

Move the dog to a shaded and cool area
Immediately pour cool (not cold to avoid shock) water over the dog. Tap water (15-16°C) has been found to be the most effective at cooling dogs with heat-related illnesses. In a true emergency, any water is better than nothing.
Wet towels placed over the dog can worsen the condition, trapping heat. In mild cases towels can be placed under the dog, but never over, and in a true emergency water immersion or pouring water with air movement is ideal.
Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water
Continue to pour cool water over the dog until their breathing starts to settle, but not too much that they start shivering
Dogs that have lost consciousness will stop panting, despite still having a very high temperature, these dogs require urgent aggressive cooling as a priority.
Throughout the treatment of heatstroke try to avoid pouring water on or near your dog's head, as there is a risk of them inhaling water which could lead to drowning, especially for flat-faced and unconscious dogs.
Once the dog is cool, take them to the nearest vet as a matter of urgency.

Some types of dogs are more prone to heatstroke, like very old or young dogs, dogs with thick, heavy coats or dogs with very short flat faces like pugs and bulldog types. Dogs with certain diseases or on some types of medication are also more at risk.

As we have posted before, the requirements for travelling with dogs into the U.S. are changing as of Aug. 1/ 2024. The CDC was supposed to release the newly required form and solidify other requirements yesterday, July 15th, so we could prepare for the changes. They have not at this point. What we do know so far is that all dogs will have to have a microchip and are required to have had a Rabies vaccine since their microchipping. If you plan on travelling with your dog into the U.S. after Aug. 1/ 24 please keep an eye on the CDC website and call with questions and we will do our best to assist you.

With this week's hot temperatures, our pets are at a higher risk for heat stroke. Dogs with flat faces (Pugs, Bulldogs, Frenchies, etc) are at a higher risk as well as seniors and puppies. Make sure your pet has access to shade and water at all times. Also, avoid exercising them during the heat of the day, wait until it is cooler in the mornings and evenings. If you have concerns your pet may be suffering from heat stroke it is an emergency, please call the clinic at (780) 723-3354 immediately.

With July 1st quickly approaching, here are some tips to help pets cope with fireworks:

1)Seek Veterinary Advice- if you have concerns speak to your vet BEFORE the event, there are nutraceuticals, pheromone devices, and prescribed medications that can help ease the anxiety.
2)Practice- help your pet learn to associate loud noises with good things. Desensitize them by carrying treats with you and any time your pet hears a loud noise, like something being dropped on the ground, or a loud car passing by, give your pet plenty of treats.
3)Set Up Your Home- create a safe space for your pet (preferably in a basement if possible), cover windows, play music or a fan to cover sounds, and offer them a tasty treat or favorite toy to distract them.
4) Comfort Them- comfort and support your pet if it helps them. Do not punish your pet to try to make them stop showing signs of fear or stress, such as whining, pacing, or being unsettled. This will likely cause them to further associate fireworks with stress.
Also, make sure your pet has proper identification to ensure they can be returned to you in case they do manage to escape.

Please call the clinic if you have anything further questions!

Carl was a highly valued client of ours and consistently showed great support for the students we brought to the farm. These scholarships are primarily intended for students pursuing Veterinary Medicine, but depending on the number of applicants, they may be extended to Agriculture students as well. Just a little FYI for everyone with cat allergies! Purina Veterinary Diets makes a food called Live Clear that significantly reduces the allergens cats produce. It uses a key protein found in eggs to bind to the most common allergen in cat saliva and neutralize it. It does need to be fed daily and be the majority of food fed but it can reduce allergens by 47% We even have a couple of staff who feed it and have found it works wonders! If you have an questions or would like to try it pop into the clinic!
