Hi Everyone!
I wanted to thank everyone for all the kind messages of support with the closure of Wellington Equine Services and the new beginnings with Wellington Animal Rehabilitation and Wellness.

That being said we have created a new page, Wellington Animal Rehabilitation and Wellness. Follow along this new journey and learning about the benefits of VSMT and Acupuncture for horses.

01/02/2024

To all clients of Wellington Equine Services,

The onset of a new year brings opportunities for change, and it is with mixed emotions that I share news about Wellington Equine Services. Wellington Equine Services has been in operation since 2009. Since then, this journey has been characterized by growth and success in catering to the needs of Wellington County’s equine community, thanks to the unwavering support and affection from our esteemed clientele.

As many of you are aware, I experienced health issues in 2021. These issues have significantly impeded my ability to practice equine medicine. However, this setback has afforded me the opportunity to redirect my professional focus towards Integrative Rehabilitation Services, encompassing Veterinary Spinal Manipulative Therapy (VSMT aka chiropractic interventions), acupuncture, and now, canine rehabilitation medicine.

Effective January 31st, 2024, Wellington Equine Services will be restructuring as a Rehabilitation/Alternative Therapy clinic. This means we will no longer be offering mobile equine veterinary services. This decision, though long and difficult, fills me with excitement. I eagerly anticipate dedicating myself to alternative therapies for horses, cats, and dogs—a new chapter in my professional journey.

We are happy to make recommendations for alternative veterinary services for your horse. It is recommended to seek out a new veterinarian as soon as possible. Medical records will be provided as requested. We also ask that any outstanding accounts are settled by January 31st, 2024.

Once again, Wellington Equine Services appreciates the love and loyalty we have from our clients. This is not a farewell but rather a transition to a different chapter in my life. I look forward to crossing paths with you again in this new chapter.

Sincerely,

Dr. Christina Mohos

**THURSDAY RESEARCH MEME**

Todays meme relates to browband fit.

Correct bridle fit is essential. Attention is given to the fit of the noseband but, other bridle features are also important to consider.

A browband which is to small, will pull the headpiece forward and cause localised pressures at the base of the ears and in the region of the TMJ. Previously we have demonstrated the effect that increased pressures at the base of the ears and TMJ can have on equine Locomotion.

All bridle features should be considered and reinforces the importance of correct bridle fit and working with a qualified bridle fitter.

What is involved with becoming an animal chiropractor or acupuncturist?

I am asked this question all the time! To become an animal chiropractor, you must be a chiropractor or veterinarian to complete the course. A veterinarian must refer to chiropractic services as Veterinary Spinal Manipulative Therapy. The course took place over several months, involving remote and hands on sessions as well as regular testing. It is important to confirm the animal chiropractor you seek has the necessary training and is certified with an AVCA or CoAC approved program.

To become a veterinary acupuncturist, I attended the Curacore Medical Acupuncture Course for veterinarians. Only veterinarians are allowed to attend the course. Learning is initially remote with many, many hours of lessons to be followed by an in-person lessons with testing at the conclusion. Case studies were also done to achieve certification.

If you want to know more, just ask!

To sum that all up, if you are seeking alternative medical therapies such as VSMT and acupuncture, seek out a veterinarian that is certified. The idea of untrained and uncertified vets or lay people working on animals is scary. I would never have an untrained chiropractor or acupuncturist working on me! Not only can it cause harm (as I have seen many times) but you will not get results. Appreciate your veterinarians that have sought out further training to learn these skills....they have put in a huge effort to learn how to help your animals!

Murphy has taught us that there IS the right treat out there for every pup. Murphy particularly enjoys his beef and vegetable baby food frozen treat:) Here is Murphy receiving acupuncture for hind end weakness and neurological deficits at Blue Springs Animal Rehabilitation Center. It took a couple of sessions to win over this little guy but it was well worth the effort. We love seeing Murphy regularly and are thrilled that his hind end issues are improving.

Meet Maverick! Maverick is a very sweet gelding that experienced some sort of trauma in early 2023 that caused him to have neurological issues and a persistent head tilt. It was found that he had injured his cervical vertebrae and because of the inflammation around the vertebrae, Maverick tilts his head to avoid pain. We have been treating Maverick with VSMT, Acupuncture and laser. We are happy to report that he responded well to treatment, his head tilt is almost totally gone and his hind end is feeling better. Way to go Maverick!

As we often say, treat the whole patient, not just individual parts! Here, Dr. Christina Mohos, recent graduate of the Medical Acupuncture for Veterinarians course, describes her treatment approach for a horse with both acute and chronic laminitis. Kudos to Dr. Mohos because she did indeed treat the entire Olaf. CuraCore Vet

A gelding with chronic laminitis in his left front foot also had acute laminitis in his right front foot. He responded well to acupuncture.

Wellington Equine Services would like to congratulate Dr. Christina Mohos for completing the Curacore Veterinary Medical Acupuncture course. She can offer acupuncture services to dogs, cats and horses! Acupuncture is an alternative medicine that involves placing needles at specific points on your animal's body. This helps their body heal itself, reduces pain, inflammation and modifies the immune system. I have not met a pet that does not love their treatment. A special thank you to Olaf and Pippi for your assistance.

WHY DO HORSES GET ULCERS?

Equine gastric ulcers can affect any horse at any age. Up to 90% of racehorses and 60% of show horses, as well as non-performance horses and even foals are affected by equine gastric ulcers, which are the result of the erosion of the lining of the stomach due to a prolonged exposure to the normal acid in the stomach.

Unlike ulcers in humans, bacteria do not appear to cause equine gastric ulcers. Horses are designed to be grazers with regular intake of roughage. Since the horse’s stomach continually secretes acid, gastric ulcers can result when the horse is not eating regularly due to there being less feed in the stomach to neutralize the acid.

Ulcers are often a man-made disease. Stall confinement alone can lead to the development of ulcers. A horse’s feeding schedule also can be a factor, and high-grain diets can also contribute to the development of ulcers. Stress, both environmental and physical, can increase the likelihood of ulcers, as can hauling, training and mixing groups of horses. Strenuous exercise can decrease the emptying of the stomach and the blood flow to the stomach, thus contributing to the problem.

The treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers is directed at removing these predisposing factors, thus decreasing acid production within the horse’s stomach. Prevention of ulcers is the key in helping your horse, as neutralizing the production of stomach acid is nature’s best antacid.

Please note that the only way to definitively diagnose ulcers is through gastroscopy, and that a qualified equine veterinarian should be consulted in any case of suspected gastric ulcers to determine the best course of action and treatment for the individual horse.
