IS PERMETHRIN A SAFE TREATMENT FOR POULTRY LICE AND MITES???

All insecticides are toxic to some extent, or they wouldn't work. Permethrin is a synthetic version of pyrethrins- natural insecticides that are extracted from daisy-like flowers. Compared to natural pyrethrins, synthetic versions persist longer in the environment and therefore need to be applied less often.

Permethrin comes in the form of a dust or spray and works by paralyzing an insect's nervous system.

Permethrin has low toxicity for birds but is toxic to fish and honeybees and highly toxic to cats. It is an ingredient in shampoo used to effectively to treat head lice in humans. It is approved for use in poultry housing, where it is a treatment against lice, mites ticks and bedbugs.

No withdrawal period is specified. When applying permethrin powder to a chicken's body, avoid getting any on the chicken's face, especially in its eyes, and avoid breathing it yourself. To apply a powder, put into a shaker, or squeeze bottle and puff it into the chicken's vent fluff.

When applying the powder inside your coop, a lightweight garden duster helps get the powder into the cracks and crevices. Shoo the chickens outside, wear a dust mask to avoid breathing in the powder, and wear goggles to keep it out of your eyes.

Scours is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in calves' first month of life. l
13 beef herd management tips to help prevent calf scours

BEFORE CALVING SEASON
1 . Start clean. Make sure the calving area is clean and dry at the start of the calving season. 2 Ideally, this area should be one where you DID NOT overwinter your livestock.
2. Keep it clean. Regular cleaning of the calving area is mandatory.2
3. Avoid overcrowding through the calving season to control pathogen buildup. 2 Healthy adult cattle can shed many of the common infectious organisms that cause calf scours, such as E. coli, rotavirus, coronavirus, and Cryptosporidium parvum. 2 3
4. Ensure enough clean dry space is available to handle an above average number of calvings and sick calves.
5. Ensure pregnant cows have adequate nutrition (energy, protein and trace minerals), especially in the last trimester, to support fetal growth. 2,3
6. Monitor cows' body condition score. Cows in the last trimester of pregnancy should have a body condition score of 3 on a scale of 1 to 5.4
7. Vaccinate cows against pathogens associated with calf scours during the last three months of pregnancy, to fortify colostrum. 2 Please follow label recommendation for BOVILIS O Guardian@.
DURING CALVING SEASON
8. Calve the heifers earlier than the main cow herd in clean fields.3
9. Make sure calves start nursing as soon as possible to get adequate colostrum.
10. Pay particular attention to calves born at risk (i.e., twins, hard pulls etc.), who tend to be slower to stand and nurse, and are at greater risk for calf scours. 2
1 1 . Limit contamination. Do not bring in cattle from other herds during calving season,3 clean equipment between calves, and wear only clean outerwear (i.e., boots and coveralls).
1 2. Use strict sanitation and treat sick calves only after handling the healthy ones.3
1 3. Separate calves into groups of similar age to reduce the risk of transmission. 2

It is that time of year, when ticks start making their appearance. A temperature of 4 degrees Celcius and higher will bring them to the surface. Prevention and awareness is the key for keeping them at bay on our four legged friends. Migratory birds have been known to carry ticks between their breeding and wintering grounds, so prevention in the spring and fall is highly recommended. An infected tick could drop off a bird into a garden or yard. It then can catch a ride on both animals and people and then attach themselves. Treatment and prevention involves giving your pets a chewable tablet or a topical treatment that lasts 12 weeks, it also is good for fleas too. The product we carry is called Bravecto. Purchasing the product requires a valid VCPR (Veterinary Client Patient Relationship). I am attaching some great information regarding ticks, that you may find useful. 🐶🐈🐩🐈‍⬛🐕🐾https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5F_k59wgk

A reminder to book your pets in for spay and neutering.
Questions about the procedure, pricing, and suitable age to spay your pet? Give the gals at the clinic a call today 306-378-2252

Early spaying and neutering in feline pets can prevent unwanted litters and reduce behaviors such as marking and roaming. It also significantly decreases the risk of certain health issues, including ovarian, uterine, and testicular cancers.

Many veterinarians recommend spaying or neutering around 6 months of age, before the first heat for females, which can reduce the risk of mammary cancer. Of course recommendations can vary based upon breed size and health status.

Dr. Williams had the privilege of sitting in on a producers meeting last month with Dr. John Campbell and the Herd Investigation Unit.

Dr. Campbell - Professor, Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences stated that almost 30% of cattle herds have a copper deficiency.

Feed testing has been found non-sufficient because causes of copper deficiency is so multifaceted. Of course it can be assumed to be indirectly related to drought conditions.

The outcome has been open cows, high abortion rates, weak or stillborn calves. As well, the immune suppression indirectly causes calf illness because they cannot respond normally to vaccination. Other outcomes are diseases like coccidiosis.

🐮Diagnosis can be done via blood testing 5 to 10 cows in the heard but liver biopsy is more exact to determine mineral status of your herd.

It's important to note that animals in excellent body condition can still be copper deficient.

☎Contact the clinic for more information or testing for your herd. 306-378-2252
