Longtime followers know that we often warn about the dangers of Avian Influenza, but all farm animals are at risk of contracting diseases.

Whether you're a farmer on a small scale or a large one, we know that all livestock are susceptible to illness, and it's up to us to do all we can to prevent that.

One of the best things we can do for our animals is to adopt strict biosecurity practices.

The article below has great information on implementing common sense biosecurity that can be applied to any size of farm, and towards almost any species of farmed animal. We hope that you find it as helpful as we did.

We've had a few frosty mornings this past week and it may have you wondering about your stock tank heaters or deicers.

If you already have a deicer, be sure to inspect it thoroughly before use. This includes all working parts and the cord. If there are any signs of damage then it is time to replace the unit.

We occasionally hear from people who are concerned that their deicer stopped working for no reason. This can happen and we recommend resetting your unit.

To reset the deicer or heater simply unplug it, place it in a freezer for an hour, and then try it again. We find that this reset is often all that is needed to have the unit operating once again.

We have a wide variety of stock tank heaters and deicers available now, and will throughout the winter months, to best suit your needs and those of your animals.

Please note that we will be CLOSED on Tuesday, November 11th in order to observe Remembrance Day.

In the meantime, we encourage you to take part in the poppy campaign. Every year, from the last Friday of October to November 11, tens of millions of Canadians wear a poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada’s veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today.

The poppy is distributed freely to all who wish to wear one, and your local Legion gratefully accepts donations to the Poppy Fund.

Daylight saving time comes to an end in just a few short weeks, on Sunday, November 2.

In an effort to disrupt the schedule of your animals as little as possible we like to remind you of this upcoming time change.

You can start helping your animals, either in the home or in the barn, anytime now. Begin by moving their scheduled feeding, walks, or training time by just a few minutes each day. This way, when the time change happens, it doesn't require a large adjustment on the part of your animals. It may also help you adjust to the upcoming time change.

The exception to this is in regards to time sensitive medications. We recommend that you reach out to your veterinary team on how to best navigate the time change.

If you've ever had to remove sticky tree sap from your pet's coat then you know what a challenging mess it can be. Once you know how to remove the sap you'll be surprised at how easy it can be.

If the sap has hardened, you can soften it using a hair dryer set to the lowest setting. Test the dryer on your hand first to find a safe distance where the air feels warm but not hot.

You can loosen the sap by using olive oil, mineral oil, or smooth peanut butter (making sure it is xylitol free). Massage the product onto the affected fur and let it sit for a few minutes. It’s important to only use products that are safe if ingested, since your furry friend may try to lick the oily substance off their fur.

Next, use your fingers and a wide toothed comb to carefully and slowly work the sap out of your pet's fur. As you go, you can wipe off some of the oily product and residue with a washcloth or paper towel.

If there are stubborn patches near the tips of the hair, you can carefully trim them with scissors, making sure to avoid cutting too close to the skin.

Lastly, give them a good bath with warm water and shampoo. You may need to shampoo the area more than once to get all the oily product out.

While we hate to be the bearers of bad news, winter is on the way, and the upcoming long weekend is the perfect time to start preparing for it.

There's nothing worse than being caught unprepared when the snow flies so below we've compiled a list to help you get started.

-Clean and de-clutter. Remove any clutter in and around the barn, get rid of broken or unusable equipment.

-Find any heated waters or deicers. Thoroughly inspect them for wear or damage before use. Replace if needed.

-Make any repairs. Fix any damage to the roof, gutters, doors, or to fencing.

-Cold weather can drive rodents indoors. Move any feed to rodent proof containers.

-Prepare for power outages. Have essential supplies like flashlights, batteries, and emergency feed and water in case of a power outage.

-Restock first aid supplies if needed. Potentially move kit indoors or into a tackroom to prevent supplies from freezing.

This list is just a starting point. All of you will have your own winterizing lists depending on your needs, preferences, and animals.

We are in the ideal time to plant garlic to harvest next year.

When planting garlic separate the bulb into cloves and plant them 3-4 inches deep, pointed end up, in rich and well drained soil.

Cover the cloves with 2-3 inches of straw to protect them through winter. Garlic is best planted in the fall as it requires a cold period for proper bulb development.

Come visit us in our Vernon location for everything you need for planting and harvesting your garlic.

Halloween is just a few weeks away and with it comes fireworks.

If your houehold pets, or livestock, typically become stressed during loud noises, such as thunder or fireworks, now is a good time to reach out to your vet and inquire about using sedatives.

This is a very common concern amongst pet owners but it is important to not leave it till the last few days before fireworks begin, as your clinic may not have space available to accommodate your needs.

By acting now you can give yourself, and your pet, peace of mind during those stressful times.

Last week the Enderby location was thrilled to welcome a visit from Pandora, an Angora rabbit.

Angora rabbits are primarily bred for their coats, known as Angora wool. Caring for Angora rabbits requires dedicated, daily grooming to prevent painful matting, regular trimming or shearing, and a diet rich in hay to aid digestion and prevent hairballs. They also benefit from playtime and socialization outside of their enclosure, as Pandora is doing here.

We regularly stock a variety of rabbit pellets and hay, from trusted names such as Stoter Farm, and HiPro Trouw.

If you've got questions about feeding your rabbits, please reach out to us, we're always happy to answer your questions.
