Different Types of Paso Fino Horses Explained

All Paso Finos are small horses (standing an average of 13 to 15.2 hands) with a fine yet muscular build, elegant head carriage, and lush manes and tails similar to their Andalusian ancestors. However, the Puerto Rican Paso Fino tends to have a slightly more delicate step, and it is the only type of horse which may be born with a unique “tiger eye” coloration. Colombian Paso Finos, on the other hand, are noted for their “brio” (spirited nature) and often display a more dramatic, piston-like action that makes them beautifully animated in the show ring. American Paso Finos were produced by cross-breeding these two strains with an emphasis on refining the breed’s faster gaits (the Paso Corto and Paso Largo) to cover ground more quickly.

The Paso Fino is one of the oldest horse breeds originating in North America and played a pivotal role in reintroducing horses to the continent. Gaited horse breeds, such as the Paso Fino, have the unique ability to move each leg independently. As they move, they keep one foot on the ground at all times, producing a smooth, even four-beat stride that lacks jarring upward momentum. The Paso Fino is one of the oldest horse breeds originating in North America and played a pivotal role in reintroducing horses to the continent. The ancestors of the Paso Fino (which included the Barb, Spanish Jennet, and Andalusian horse breeds) accompanied Christopher Columbus on his first voyage to the New World in 1493, before being cross-bred to produce the perfect light riding horse. Due to its combination of stamina, sure-footedness, and a uniquely smooth, comfortable riding gait, the Paso Fino quickly became a favourite mount for Spanish settlers and ranchers.

Like the Canadian Horse, which descended from French horses brought to Canada in the 1600s, and the Morgan, which dates back to the late 1700s, the Paso Fino is one of North America’s equine founding fathers – making the recognition and preservation of this breed critically important.
