🗣 Hear this out!!!

🤯 40% of dog agility handlers struggle with their dogs turning wide! 🤯

YIKES! That is a staggering statistic, don't you think? 😶

We learned this after conducting a survey recently, and given how common this issue is, I thought a blog on this topic was warranted.

Last month, I discussed the mechanics of a popular summer dog sport: dock diving.

Today, I want to touch on potential injuries that can occur to dogs who practice this fun sport.

Potential injuries could arise from:

🩹 slips on the wet dock,

🩹 over-extension of the iliopsoas muscle,

🩹 acute caudal myopathy (sometimes called swimmer tail) and

🩹 impact injuries to the water from poor landings/positioning.

Dock diving dogs or any sports or active dog can benefit from a functional fitness regimen. I invite you to look into our Functional Fitness for the Active Dog monthly membership - we help you fast-track your dog’s progress in the canine gym, your chosen sport, AND daily movement!

Now that summer is approaching 🌞 , let’s discuss a popular seasonal sport for our dogs that is gaining popularity: dock diving.

What are the mechanics of dock diving?

Dogs must:

1️⃣ sprint to the end of the dock,

2️⃣ collect themselves, and then

3️⃣ explode from the rear to propel themselves into the air properly.

To do this effectively, we must build their:

Core strength 🍫 ,

Explosive power 🧨 ,

General fitness, and

Endurance, as they'll repeat this performance several times throughout the day.

Every dog is different, so the conditioning considerations will vary depending on the dog (i.e. breed). As a rule of thumb, I encourage dock diving dogs to have an exercise routine that works their core and builds strength and endurance. 👌

One of the challenges of dock diving (at least in Canada) is that it is seasonal in both competition and training opportunities. So, a conditioning regime over the ❄️ winter months will greatly help your dogs return to this sport in the summer.

You can read more about conditioning the dock diving dog in my blog here: https://www.mcrehabilitation.com/blog/sport-breakdown-conditioning-the-dock-diving-dog

It’s time for another canine fitness equipment recommendation from Amazon.

As promised, I am here to share tried-and-tested products to enhance your canine gym experience. The best part is that they’re affordable, versatile, and don’t take up much space.

Today’s recommendation is the CORK YOGA BLOCKS. I prefer cork yoga blocks to foam because they’re sturdier and provide better balance for different exercises. This increases our dog’s safety and confidence and reduces the risk of injury.

You can find a link to a set of cork yoga blocks I recommend here: https://mcintyre-canine-rehabilitation.mykajabi.com/amazon-affiliate-links

💥 Since May is Physiotherapy Month, I want to discuss what we physiotherapists do in more depth!

Physiotherapy is much more than developing rehabilitation plans for injuries - although that is a part of it.

Another big part of our job is helping owners develop a fitness plan that PROACTIVELY keeps their canine athlete in the best shape possible to help PREVENT injury.

💪🐶Improving stamina, flexibility, and body awareness helps dogs minimize injury and have longer and healthier sports careers.

Building a good relationship with your Canine Physio BEFORE an injury occurs is vital in helping to spot subtle signs of weakness that can be improved before they become injuries.

Helping you achieve your sports goals and keeping your dogs healthy and happy is why I love doing what I do!! 🥰

Let me know in the comments below if your dog sees a canine physio! 😁

There's nothing "pretty" about the sit pretty trick we teach our dogs! 😬😬

For years, fitness trainers have encouraged this exercise for its benefit to the core, but more and more, we're urging owners to avoid sitting pretty. This is because this exercise can cause injury, and there are better, safer exercises that can help the core.

‼️‼️‼️ Remember, exercises should be functional and mimic a dog's normal movements. The sit pretty does not 🚫meet this criteria and, in my opinion, can cause more harm than good! There are many more exercises to choose from!

My colleague and good friend, Laurie Edge Hughes, owner of The Canine Fitness and Care Centre in Calgary, Alberta, shares the same sentiment about the “sit pretty” trick: https://www.caninefitness.com/index.php?pid=35&name=Blog&bid=85&title=Stop-Sitting-Pretty

‼️ NEW BLOG ALERT ‼️

Every spring, without fail, my dogs and I have a special date marked on our calendar. Nope, it’s not a team tryout. Nope, it’s not an agility competition overseas. It’s our annual vet checkup at Alma Street Animal Hospital!

I know this may not sound very exciting, but more than excitement, this brings me PEACE OF MIND regarding my dogs’ health and wellbeing. I’m a big believer in being proactive rather than reactive. By taking my dogs to their vet annually for their general checkup, I achieve 6 important things that I am sharing in my latest blog:

DO YOU HAVE A PUPPY AND WANT (OR ALREADY HAVE) TO START THEM ON AGILITY?🐶

Are you unsure of what exercises to do with them and at what age? 🫨

Deciding what your young agility puppies can and cannot safely do can be overwhelming and challenging. 🧐

I created this easy-to-read chart to help you decide which skills or exercises to work on with your agility puppy.

📣📣📣Remember, our main goal for agility puppies in the canine gym is to build and strengthen their confidence and teach them how to safely interact with various pieces of fitness equipment and environments.

If you are wondering when your dog’s growth plates will close, please consult your vet or rehab professional. The time varies widely depending on the dog’s breed and size. 🐾🐾🐾

There is no one age-fits-all-all for when to move on to more complex and demanding training exercises.

When your dog DOESN’T turn tight in the agility ring…

👎 They have more chances of off-courses

👎They take more strides, leading to slower course times

👎You, as the handler, are likely to change your handling cues based on your dog’s turning ability instead of focusing on what’s best for them

👎 You waste time standing around waiting for your dog to catch up to you, which is not a good idea with a fast dog in this sport

👎 Your dog is more likely to develop more physical compensation issues.

In summary... There are NO positives 🙅 to wide-sweeping turns, especially when your desired outcome is for your dog to turn tighter! 🐕

I work on tight turn and collection exercises every single week with my shelties to ensure we have an edge over our competition and do not lose ANY time, speed or ground due to wide turns! This shift in our training has been a game changer, leading to two of my shelties, Keeper and Shades, being named to Team Canada!

So now I want to share my program with you and guide you through a six-week journey that combines canine fitness and agility-specific exercises to unlock your dog’s tight-turning skills!

Tomorrow is the LAST CHANCE to join at a special introductory price of $97.

😶‍🌫️Have you dreamed of competing with your dogs at an international agility competition? 🥇

I achieved that dream last year; you can achieve it too if that's what you want! 😁👏

In 2023, I was honoured to represent Team Canada and compete overseas at two major international events, the World Agility Open in the Netherlands and the Agility World Championship in the Czech Republic.

Having personally navigated the rigorous terrain of major agility events, I've realized that the fine art of tight turns and impeccable collection skills can make all the difference between clinching the gold or lagging behind. With each sweeping turn adding precious seconds to the clock ⏰, mastering the technique becomes a non-negotiable pursuit for serious contenders like us 🫡.

With this passion for fine-tuning and a desire to empower fellow agility owners and handlers, I created Tight Turn Pro Part 1 - an innovative 6-week program to elevate your dog's tight turning and collection skills. 🏃‍♀️🐕

Drawing from my firsthand experience and insights gleaned from the trenches of agility competitions, this program unveils the secrets behind achieving seamless tight turns and maximizing your dog's potential on the course.

Join today for $97 CAD. This price will increase the next time we launch Tight Turn Pro - Part 1.

What’s the relationship between cooking 🧑‍🍳 and agility?🐕

Think about it, if you want to learn how to cook, you start by making something simple, like rice 🍚 before you embark on making a five-course meal, right?
The same applies to our dogs and agility! Like the cooking analogy, when we focus on ONE piece of the puzzle 🧩rather than the whole picture, we achieve greater success.

We’re happy to introduce Tight Turn Pro - Part 1, a 6-week program where you will improve your dog’s tight turning ability, translating to better overall agility performance.

Here’s what you’ll get inside the program:

✅ 3 lessons, released every 2 weeks

✅ BOTH canine fitness and agility-specific exercises in each lesson

✅ Each lesson has detailed written instructions in PDF format and video demonstrations. Simply follow the guide, watch the video and go!

✅ 12-month access to the program content

✅ Support from a private Facebook group (this is where the program will run)

✅ Access to me and my team of coaches for 8 weeks so you can ask questions and submit your videos to receive actionable feedback

But remember, this is a beta program offered at only $97 CAD. This price will increase the next time we offer Tight Turn Pro - Part 1.

So, what do you say; are you ready to enhance your dog's collection ability, strengthen their body to improve balance, stability and tight turning skills and get back precious seconds lost to wide sweeping turns?

Let’s do this!
