A generalist predatory mite, Anystis baccarum (L.), has been identified as a key predator of small, soft-bodied pest species in various agroecosystems around the world. The foxglove aphid Aulacorthum solani (Keltenbach) is a new problematic pest in Canadian greenhouses. Laboratory colonies of A. bac...

In strawberry production, western flower thrips (WFT) and two-spotted spider mites (TSSM) inflict feeding damage and reduce the yield. Biological control for these pests often includes phytoseiid predatory mites and entomopathogenic fungi. The hemipteran family Nabidae have been reported as prominen...

Hi. A little announcement. We are working on registering the business and building new website. It looks like we will be able to offer online shopping and cheaper + faster shipping. However, we would have to increase the spider adoption fee by five bucks in order to cover the cost of website building and domain. The total cost on your end will not change much due to the cheaper shipping. Would that be cool with you?

UPDATE: Thank you all for your support. We are working towards January 2024 launch of our new website. Also we are working on biodegradable winter shipping packaging as well (not this winter though).

Hi. As you may know, we don't ship in the cold weather. This will be inconvenient for many holiday shoppers. If you are, or you know someone thinking about gifting our spiders to someone important, we advise to get it shipped ASAP, and keep the secret present at your work, relatives/friends place until the Christmas. Hoping to make your holiday special 🕷🎄

Hi. Sorry for not responding to inquiries lately. Been busy....BUT good news. My son and I found another spidey spot and we searched for Phidippus. We found HUGE female Phidippus audax var. bryantae, and also Phidippus whitmani female. They are laying eggs at the moment, so no pics yet.
So LOTS of adax slings are expected in 2 months, and I will work on whitmani breeding for next season.

If you have furry pets who have been treated with topical flea/tick meds, you MUST wash hands thoroughly before touch anything the spider would touch. The med is pesticide, and is a major cause behind "DKS". It is not a disease, but symptoms that include the jerky movements, loss of motor control, and eventually death (usually in less than a week). If you have options, switch to oral med instead of topical ones.

Change in our packaging. We are switching to biodegradable bubble mailer for spider shipments. Please note that the small piece of bubble wrap used for spider containers are NOT biodegradable (normal ♻️ please). We will still use heat-shield bubble mailers on hot summer days though.

Some P. audax retain orange hue even after the last molt. This female is from our light-colour line. She has been recently paired. We have not had luck in successfull pairing with P. audax yet. Hopefully this female and another one paired would do well. For those who are on the waitlist for P. audax slings, it will be May if their eggs turn out to be fertile ones.

Hi. Who is aware of 'biological pest control', and ever wanted Bug friends who would protect your hobby garden/greenhouse and pet plants? I am thinking about expanding my store selections to include predatory insects that can eat a wide range of pests. My profession is research entomology technician in biological control in greenhouse. I have invented Anystis baccarum mites for greenhouse biological control (google it if you are curious). I have also found several insect species that are suited for use at home, especially in the grow tents. Unlike conventional tiny predatory mites etc that are used in commercial growers, my predatory insects are as big and cute as lady beetles, but better at staying on your plants. I maybe even start breeding jumping spider species more suited to be just released in your plants. I know you can get those commercially produced predatory bugs at garden centers and online resale stores, but the quality is sometimes questionable. My predatory insects will be captive-bred by myself from specimens caught around my house. Curious how much demand is out there.

Dear Canadian Jumper fans! First of all, MAPLE PHIDIPPUS is grateful for another successful year in 2022. Although we had our first DOA last year (just one), we still hold 99.9% live arrival record. Now as promised, 2023 WAITLIST IS OPEN!! For more details, please visit https://tarosaito.wixsite.com/maplephidippus. Please inquire via the website or the FB messenger. We have P. princeps slings currently growing to be subadults in March. However, P. audax females struggled to give fertile eggs, and we have the new female soon to be mated. We will take request for audax slings but no promises yet until we will have her slings running around. First picture is the new P. audax female (light coloured line, notice the gray/brown tone), and second picture is the current mama P. princeps.
