More updates on travel to the USA! As it stands, if you are travelling to the states with your dog after August 1, it will need the following:
1. Be at least 6 months old
2. Have a microchip
3. Have not travelled to a country high risk for rabies in the past 6 months
4. You will have to fill out an online form (it doesn’t look like a veterinarian needs to be involved with the signing anymore)
Please read more below if you are planning a trip south. Keep checking the CDC website prior to travel in case there are further changes!

There are new rules about crossing the border to the USA with dogs starting August 1, 2024. There are still some negotiations going on between our governments, but as it stands right now, your dog will need the following to cross the border:
1. The dog must be at least 6 months old
2. The dog must be microchipped
3. Your dog must be up to date on their Rabies vaccine
4. There is a CDC form that needs to be filled out ahead of time, and signed by your veterinarian (it will not need to be signed by a CFIA veterinarian)
We will continue to update you as we find out more. Please make sure you are prepared and plan ahead for upcoming travel!

NEW Healthy Canadians Statement: The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently changed their requirements for dogs entering the U.S., effective August 1, 2024. 📅

Baby Billie is feeling a bit better after some pain medication and antibiotics. The biggest boost to her energy seems to be that we were able to reunite her with the only other surviving cygnet from her group after the attack (there were 5 to start with). As you can see in this video, Billie can’t quite figure out how to get the food in her mouth. She will need to learn to adjust if there’s any hope of her surviving. We’ll keep updating on her progress!

07/11/2024

We don’t typically work with animals other than dogs and cats, but when this cygnet (baby swan) was brought to us after being attacked by a wild animal, we just had to try to help. This little baby is named Billie, and she is missing the top half of her bill. We are hoping she will survive. Stay tuned for updates!

Bassets aren’t usually though of as a large breed, but they really can be, so we’re curious to see just how big Fred will get!

Happy Halloween!!!

Follow these tips to keep your pets safe this Halloween:

1. Keep cats and dogs away from doors - consider keeping them in a secure room while trick or treaters are about.

2. Use caution with pet costumes - make sure they don’t cover their mouth/nose or block their vision. Only use a costume if your pet is comfortable with it.

3. Keep the candy out of reach!!! Chocolate especially can be highly toxic to dogs and cats.

4. If you have a pet that doesn’t like visitors, consider sitting outside to hand out candy (or place a bowl out for people to self serve) to avoid repeated door knocks/doorbell rings.

Well, here we go again! Turns out people can transmit monkey pox to their pets. Please read the article below by Dr. Scott Weese (OVC’s epidemiologist) to learn more about measures you should take to limit their exposure if someone in your household is infected.

Now that human-dog transmission of monkeypox has been identified, there's a lot more interest in what to do about animals that have been exposed to

Does your dog like to swim? If so, there are a few things to keep in mind this summer:

1. Dogs can still get heatstroke even when they’re wet! Make sure they take frequent breaks, and have a chance to cool down.

2. Most lake/river water is dirty! It’s best to rinse your pet in clean water after swimming.

3. If they get water in their ears (I’m talking to the labs out there who stick their whole head in the water!), it’s best to flush their ears after swimming with a gentle dog ear cleaner

4. Take collars off, and towel dry your dog as well as you possibly can! We see a lot of “hot spots” this time of year. These are areas of infection that develop when the fur and skin don’t fully dry. Common places are under the ears and neck, inner thighs, and sometimes on the side of the hips when the dog lays down.

5. Beware of blue green algae. Blue green algae is extremely toxic, and is sometimes present in our waterways in the heat of summer. It is most common in stagnant bodies of water, but we recommend keeping your dog out of any water that appears dirty or foamy, or has an obvious algae bloom on the surface. See https://wdgpublichealth.ca/blue-green-algae for more info

The heat is definitely back! Please be careful with your pets, and under no circumstances should you leave them unattended in your vehicle!

As we continue to have warmer weather, Triscuit wants to remind you to not leave your pets in the car.

If you see an animal alone in a hot car, please call 911. Only Police or Provincial Animal Welfare Services are allowed to intervene and enter the vehicle in these situations. Our Animal Services officers are available to assist the police, and will be able to educate owners on the risks of leaving pets in cars.

There are 3 puppies from Fergus that are in need of financial assistance to get a diagnosis and the medical care they need. These puppies have had neurological issues since they were born. The owners were unable to afford the referral to a specialist, and so made the difficult decision to put them in foster care. They are now being cared for by Fur-Ever Able Dog Rescue and Rehab- Canada, a rescue group that works with special needs dogs. They have racked up some significant vet bills visiting the neuro department at the Mississauga Oakville Veterinary Emergency and Referral hospital. If you are able to donate to help these pups get the care they need, please send an etransfer to [email protected]

It’s black fly season! If you are seeing bites like this on your dog’s belly, don’t panic! It’s likely the bruise associated with a bite from a black fly, and is totally harmless. It should resolve within a few days. If it doesn’t, or it’s spreading, give us a call!
