Most hazardous go-home weekend ever! People are still determined to come for their pups despite the snowstorms (we're happy to reschedule) but can't make it all the way so we're driving out to meet them. We have the puppy in the pickup truck, the road isn't plowed and has a foot of snow on it and ... THIS song comes on the radio!🤯

It's go-home weekend & this is what we love to hear: "I just wanted to let you know Pearl had a great first night in her new home. She slept in her crate like a champ and has peed and pooped in her litter box. Thank you again for everything we are over the moon with our new baby!" And thank you to our puppy families for braving the snow-covered roads to bring home their little ones!

Happy Holidays from Maui -- a Skye & Dreamer baby born Dec. 6, 2021. (And happy belated birthday, too!). His family says: "We are absolutely in love with his personality. One minute he's super energetic, then the next he would cuddle up beside us. He is also very extroverted and is friends with all of the dogs at daycare. It's a joy to watch him grow. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season with your family the cutest Fairhaven pups!"

This should be a joyful time of year but instead it's turned into a nightmare for dog owners in downtown Windsor due to a parvovirus outbreak. This highly contagious disease is preventable through vaccination but is hardy, common, and persistent in the environment for months and even years. The death rate is 67-91% even with treatment. Animal services are now scrambling to offer vaccination clinics but the sad part is that it takes 1-2 weeks for the vaccine to be effective, and dogs aren't fully protected with just one dose -- 2 boosters are needed. Puppies should be vaccinated at 8, 12 and 16 weeks, and thereafter every 2-3 years. Most commonly, this disease is found in puppy mills. That bargain puppy isn't such a bargain if the vet bills are going to exceed $1500 with no guarantee of survival. Please make sure your dogs are up to date on their vaccinations! Our hearts go out to all those going through this crisis. **Facebook won't let us post a link to the article so we've posted a photo instead but it's from CBC News.

This should be a joyful time of year but instead, dog owners in downtown Windsor are dealing with a nightmare. What astounded us was the sheer number of unvaccinated dogs in that neighbourhood. Parvivirus is extremely hardy, persistent in the environment for months and years, and highly contagious. The death rate is 67-91% even with treatment. Puppies should be vaccinated at 8 weeks of age and then again at 12 and 16 weeks. Then, every 2-3 years. Animal services is now scrambling to set up mass vaccination clinics. The sad part of this is that it generally takes 1-2 weeks for the vaccine to become effective, and that 1 vaccination doesn't offer full immunity -- the dog needs 2 more boosters after that. So this outbreak could get a lot worse before it gets better. Our hearts go out to the families and their pets struggling with this horrible disease. Please keep your pets up-to-date on their vaccinations!

A parvovirus outbreak in downtown Windsor has claimed the lives of 18 dogs that Animal Welfare Services aware of, while a dozen others are receiving care.

At the risk of posting TOO MANY puppy photos ... here are our youngest babies born Nov. 3, and also our smallest! These youngsters are just over half the size of the puppies just 3 days older! The largest is less than 800 g vs. an average of 1.4 kg for the puppies born Oct. 31. Mom Jasper is only 9 pounds though! We don't want to risk Meta's ire by mentioning whether they all have homes but that information can be found on our website or by messaging us.

**ATTENTION** I welcome anyone to "like" or "friend" my personal FB page for any updates or notifications should this Bichon page be deleted. It's Patricia Kastanek and I believe I've removed the privacy restrictions (LMK if it didn't work!) Thanks! Photo below for attention...

Attached is my appeal to the post removals on this page. If you support our page please like or leave a comment and I will try to send it to a human being at Facebook!

"I post photos of puppies, information on dog health, warnings about medications, seasonal safety tips. My followers use the page to post pictures of their dogs and find families with siblings of their dogs for play dates, etc. My holiday posts feature festive photos of Bichons. It is a page enjoyed by more than 2,500 followers. Many of my followers simply enjoy cute photos of puppies. My clients use the page to connect with each other and learn more about the breed. I DON'T sell puppies on this page. I DON'T list pricing. I have a waiting list and most of my puppies are spoken for before they are born. I've had pages removed with photos of puppies that expressly stated "These puppies have been spoken for." My photos and videos are entertaining, informative and fun. They in no way violate Facebook's community standards prohibiting the selling of puppies. I believe they are being removed due to faulty AI algorithms. Facebook does not prohibit breeders from having pages, only the selling of puppies. I would like all my posts to be restored. I am getting multiple posts on my feed from breeders whose content is being unfairly removed. This is causing chaos and a great deal of stress for those of us who care deeply about our pages and the importance of providing timely information on new studies, health treatments, etc. for dogs. I work hard to make my page a welcoming, entertaining and informative place for Bichon lovers. Posts warning about deadly green algae in local waterways, warnings about negative effects of new flea treatments, warnings of scammers etc. all perform an important community service. If Facebook has a problem with my posts, I should be informed before posts are randomly removed. These removals are causing me considerable stress, and appealing them is taking considerable time and effort. Facebook needs to fix its algorithm that is unfairly attacking pages related to dogs."

THURSDAY UPDATE: Thank goodness no more posts have been removed but it could take weeks to go through the appeal process for those that were. So we still have no explanation for why pages everywhere featuring animals were targeted the way they were earlier in the week.

TUESDAY UPDATE: Well, no posts have been removed in more than 24 hours but we're not relaxing yet. Hopefully the flood of appeals is causing a closer look at this issue. But we're now exploring alternative platforms in case Facebook is no longer viable for us.

We hope this isn’t goodbye! Facebook seems to have a new algorithm that’s targeting breeders and removing posts & pages seemingly at random. We’ve heard of many breeders whose innocent content has been deleted without warning. It seems that any of our complaints are handled by AI which is, of course, impossible to reason with. Facebook doesn’t allow openingly selling animals and these posts do not violate any FB rules. We recently had content removed that’s nothing more than photos of puppies with comments about how they’ve grown! Fear is spreading among breeders that our pages will soon be removed altogether. If this happens, please visit our website www.fairhavenbichons.com for news about our next steps – whether it be another FB page, a blog or a newsletter. In the meantime, we’re going to go through all our posts to see if anything could run afoul of Facebook’s new algorithm! Below is one of the photos removed -- even though the post included a statement that the puppies were all spoken for.🥺

Sleeping like babies! Doubling their birth weight in 2 weeks is hard work so our newborns spend most of their time either eating or sleeping. But in a couple of weeks, our house will be filled with the sound of puppies playing. We can't wait to see their personalities develop!

Our Story

We have been happily owned by dogs for more than 30 years -- friendly family dogs such as Cocker Spaniels and Golden Retrievers. We welcomed our first Bichon into our home in 2011 and were completely taken by her lively, entertaining antics and her loving, affectionate personality!

At Fairhaven Bichons, our Number 1 priority is producing healthy puppies with correct conformation. Our parents have had extensive health testing and we’re happy to provide information on their parents, grandparents, etc. Our patriarch, Joey Boy Strider of Lorien, is now 13 years old and in excellent health, though now retired. Taking over are two handsome boys: Monty (Sweet on Just Right Montage) is from New Mexico & is a descendent of Special Times Just Right (first Bichon to win Best in Show at Westminster in 2001). He also has bloodlines from several other top kennels. Dreamer (Zephyr Dream) is young but already an experienced show dog from Europe. In March 2019, he won Best of Breed and Reserve Best in Show at an event in Hungary, where we flew to pick him up and bring him home.

Our puppies are home-raised and get lots of attention from both children and adults in our household. They go home well socialized and litter trained (yes, like a cat!) which makes potty training much easier for their new families.

Fairhaven Farm recently relocated to the beautiful Beaver Valley, less than 90 minutes north of Toronto. We’re in the midst of a recreation paradise, being close to skiing, beaches, Collingwood and the Bruce Trail. Our dogs enjoy lots of exercise on our 200 acres of meadows and forests.
