Pregnancy Ultrasound 🐶
Using ultrasonography, we are able to use non-invasive imaging that shows us internal structures…in this case, a puppy! We are able to collect images using ultrasonic waves instead of radiation (radiographs).

We’re back for another weigh-in Wednesday!
We are still eating 238g of Royal Canin Advanced mobility support + Satiety a day!
Irwin spends a lot of time in the backyard, but until he loses a bit more weight, we are keeping our walks to 2-3 times a week to not overdo it on his joints!
This week he weighed in at 33.9KG which is 0.5KG down!
I took some time to talk with one of the veterinarians because I was wondering- how much weight can he safely lose a week?
The answer to this is: about 1% of his body weight!
For Irwin this means that we want to keep his loss around 0.3-0.5kg a week, meaning we are right on track!

Weight loss Wednesday!
As an update: we did some very low intensity walks throughout the week (his joints still aren’t the happiest), we stuck with our 238g of food a day, we feed twice a day so 119g in the morning and 119g in the evening!
And he is down from 34.7kg to 34.4, this May not seem too impressive, but for a week I am incredibly happy with these results so far!
Here’s a quick check in video with progress!
Here is something new for us, we’re going to call it: Weight loss Wednesday!
I’ll start with an introduction! My name is Sarah and I am part of the FVC & BL social media team! I have two dogs at home that are my best friends!
Unfortunately my younger dog, Irwin, has some weight problems! He is noticeably larger than he should be for his size (Australian cattle dog mix). Working at a vet clinic I automatically assumed that this MUST be a health issue (hypothyroidism), so we ran some bloodwork- everything came back normal.
I instantly felt ashamed that ME, a worker at a veterinary clinic could have an overweight dog!?!
Right!? False. It is so easy for dogs to be over their ideal body weight, and this can truly happen to anyone!
Some things I had to take into consideration:
1. I have a 16 month old toddler that sometimes likes to share her food with him.
2. Irwin has always had some joint issues, so he is a low energy / low exercise type of guy.
3. There are a lot of great dog foods to help with different medical conditions, keep your dogs teeth in good shape, weight loss, but unless you’re paying attention to the exact amount they need (I wasn’t- whoops) it is very easy to over feed them!
Does this make me a bad pet owner? Absolutely not. It is incredibly common to see overweight pets come into the clinic- it’s a great first step to getting them back to a healthy size!
Going forward with weight loss Wednesday, we will be following along mine & Irwin’s journey! This will be easy steps to follow to help your pet shed some pounds!
For week one of weight loss Wednesday:
-a weigh in at the vet clinic! Irwin weighed in at 34.7kg!
-have a doctor examine him and get his body condition score (this is a score out of 9, 9 being the biggest possible size, 1 being incredibly underweight) Irwin scored a 7.5
-have a technician calculate how much food he should be eating per day. I decided to feed him based on grams instead of cups as this can be more
August first!
Don’t forget to give your heartworm prevention! 🦟
