Happy Earth Day! Read on for our 2023 challenge. What will you be doing differently this year?

1) Replace a one-time use item with something re-usable. Ideas include: food wrap, plastic bags, make-up/toner removal pads, dryer sheets

2) Learn a new skill needed to repurpose something yourself. Ideas include: composting food waste or other organic matter and give nutrients back to your own yard and garden (there are many composting techniques to fit many lifestyles!), mend clothes with other on hand fabric, fix a broken item instead of throwing it out or turn it into something different like storage

3) Replace an item on your grocery list with something in season and sourced locally. Hint: check out the produce section, hit your local farmers market or grow something new in your garden from locally sourced seeds

4) Next time you buy clothing, ask yourself what is this made off? Where did it come from? Who made it? How long will this last me and what will I do with it after (ie: is it biodegradable, can I repurpose it, will this be used for many years or only a couple?) And lastly, think about what is my anticipated cost per wear?

I would love to hear new ideas and initiatives that people are trying. For us it’s all about lifelong learning and rediscovering simple sustainable living!

Did you know you can order Alberta farm fresh non-homogenized milk in Fort Mcmurray through the organicbox.ca and pick up at LifeForce Herbal Healing Centre? This makes delish mozzarella. But you can also make mozzarella with 3.25% whole milk from any of our grocery stores.

Got 2%, micro filtered, or lactose free milk? I couldn’t achieve mozzarella with these but they made fantastic ricotta!

You can make mozzarella and ricotta from the same kit. Each kit yields 40 batches!! You just supply the milk.

Get yours today at Corridor Shops & Events 🧀🏡

Homemade mozzarella using the kit from CheeseMaker.ca

How long did it take?
1 hour, 43 minutes from the very start to finished baby mozzarella balls. This included extra “sitting time” for the rennet to do it’s thing.

Milk used: 3.25% homogenized milk with vitamin D from Beatrice (I want to show that yes, you can achieve mozzarella from the milk available in our town)

Yield: 1lb 3.3oz of cheese

Favourite part: stretching the curds and watching them transform into silky, stretchy mozzarella!!

Tip: my preferred method for heating the curds before shaping is the microwave. I find it easier to achieve the right temperature and I don’t burn my fingers!

Kits are available from www.cheesemaker.ca and they do have a list of locations for distributors of their kits. We are one of them! You can find all of their kits at the Offbeat North Urban Farm Store shelves at Corridor Shops & Events in downtown Fort McMurray!

Cashews, garlic and dill? Yes please! Made a batch of vegan cheese from CheeseMaker.ca kit using cashews. Added fresh pressed garlic, garlic powder and dried dill. Using the standard amount of kappa carrageenan, this produced a spreadable cheese, perfect for crackers! Next time I will increase the amount to make it firmer for grating and melting…the hard part will be deciding on what flavours to add! Did I mention this is kid approved? Both my boys love it! 🥜🌱🧀🧄❤️

These kits are available from www.cheesemaker.ca and are also in stock at our Offbeat North Urban Farm Store shelves at Corridor Shops & Events downtown Fort McMurray.
