The amount of energy, or calories, a mare needs above maintenance levels typically doesn’t elevate upwards until the fifth month of gestation as the fetus undergoes most of its development. A 1,200-pound mare requires approximately 20,000 calories per day in early gestation and increases to 26,000 during late gestation.

If your broodmare is on pasture, make sure to know the species of grasses that are growing in that pasture. Most tall fescue grass in the US is infected by a fungal endophyte. Consumption of this endophyte-infected fescue in late gestation can cause early term prolonged pregnancy, retained placentas and even foal death.

During pregnancy, the mare’s daily nutrient requirements allow her to maintain her own body condition and nutrient requirements, as well as support those of the growing fetus. Gestational weight gain can be around 12-15% of the mare’s initial body weight, mostly made up of fetal and placental tissues. Proper nutrition during pregnancy will set your broodmare up for successfully raising a healthy foal. Follow these tips on nutrition for the pregnant mare.

Adult horses will normally drink between 5-8 gallons of water per day. However, horses eating hay require more water than horses out on pasture. Hay is generally less than 15% moisture as compared to pasture that can be 60-80% moisture.

Horses dealing with a dental condition known as EOTRH need to be provided with soft feed that they can comfortably pick up with the lips. Soaking feed and providing soaked forage substitutes can provide the nutrition these horses need while making it comfortable for them to ingest.

01/17/2023

Broodmares may be able to meet most of their nutrient requirements with forage alone up until the 5th month of gestation. Forage alone won’t be able to provide the protein, amino acid, mineral and vitamin requirements necessary to support the foal’s growth rate, so consider either adding in a commercial grain mix specifically for broodmares or a ration balancer.

Excessively cold water will decrease your horse’s water consumption so make sure water temperature is maintained between about 45 - 60 degrees F. Reduced water intake can leave your horse at risk for a number of health issues, including dehydration and impaction colic.

For horses prone to choke, one of the key nutritional management strategies is to soak feed to help the food soften and break down particles to ease swallowing. Other tactics include the use of slow feeders or barriers (i.e., large salt blocks) to help slow consumption of food.

Horses who cannot properly chew hay often “quid” where they roll it around in their mouths and drop it out. In this case, replace the hay with a forage substitute your horse is better able to chew. Forage substitutes include soaked hay pellets or cubes, a true complete feed, soaked beet pulp, and chopped forage.

Did you know hay can help your horse stay warm? Forages, which are digested by microbes located in the cecum and large intestine, produce more heat than concentrates, which are digested by enzymes in the small intestine. Feeding your horse a few extra flakes during extremely cold weather is always a good practice.

Horses have what’s called a “reserve crown” below the gumline that erupts continually to make up for tooth wear. However, that reserve is not infinite, and often runs out around the age of 25 years. A lifetime of good dental care can help track changes and indicate if and when feed management needs to be adjusted.
