Happy Thanksgiving ! Here are some tips to keep your puppy safe over the Holidays. It can be a challenging task to keep an eye on your puppy while having guests in your home, or when you go to someone else's home. In general you want to keep your puppy away from the kitchen, any food prep area, and away from the Thanksgiving table. Here are just some of the foods that are not safe to eat for your puppy and some are even toxic : turkey bones,
( they can splinter ), cookie dough; onions and garlic; alcohol, and super important : chocolate, or any products that have chocolate ingredients. If it is a large family gathering, you can have a responsible adult in charge of puppy supervision. While seated at the table for the Thanksgiving meal, either have your puppy in a crate with something fun to chew on. Or if that is not a possibility, bring a small mat, have your puppy on a leash and let him chew on something yummy under the table. I used to do that with my puppy Loki and he would chew on a Quinoa stick by "Zoey". -- Just like children might act out if they get super tired, your puppy may do the same. Then it's time to take him/her outside; maybe for a walk around the block. Or he/she may want to have a nap in a quiet room away from everyone. Wishing you all a wonderful, Thanksgiving Weekend. Here are 2 really great books to teach you all about "calming signals" which is the language our dogs use to tell us when they are uncomfortable or scared.
"Doggie Language" is a wonderful illustrated book for children, so they can have a better understanding of what their puppy is trying to tell them and how he/she is feeling.
I highly recommend these 2 books !

I would like to introduce my canine family ; we got Nala our Bernese Mountain Dog at 7 months old from the breeder. The breeder had "no use" for her since she was extremely shy. That was almost 10 years ago. She has come a long way since then. Shortly after we brought Nala home, we adopted Maddy; our one-eyed shepherd cross. We adopted her from a northern rescue group. 4 years ago we adopted little Huey; he is a papillon/chihuahua mix and he loves his "brother" Romeo, who was a re-home and has been with us for 1 1/2 years. He is a bichon/toy poodle mix. And not to forget our feline family member : Wildberry.

Beautiful Article

Considering the number of "candles" an animal, or person, may be dealing with can help you respond to challenging behavior in a less emotional, more empathetic way.

I can personally attest that when I have several "candles" stacked - last week it was a combination of daylight savings time, a wet rubber boot, hay in my gloves, a malfunctioning espresso machine and a sick kid - I am a slightly less understanding and patient being!

The same is likely true for our animals, however I am pretty sure a sub-par latte will not put them off their game like it does me!
