Monty joined our pack in April 2016 from the FSPCA. He is a smart, gentle boy. A great listener and the owner of our hearts. He has lost his eyesight since we adopted him, but it doesn’t slow him down. He is still curious, loves life and put complete trust in us to be his eyes. There is nothing he won’t do as long as we are there to guide him. He is the best & most loyal companion. Our world revolves around Montgomery!

Fredericton, N.B. – The New Brunswick SPCA (NBSPCA) is launching a campaign called “There’s No Place Like Home” to help address the growing number of cats and kittens in the care of animal shelters across the province.

Currently, around 𝟗𝟎𝟎 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐬 are awaiting adoption in New Brunswick shelters, which continues to rise, as the number of cats in need far exceeds the number being adopted. While shelters provide a safe haven for the animals in their care, the NBSPCA strives to see all pets in safe, loving and responsible homes.

Lesley Rogers, executive director of the NBSPCA, said cats are arriving from many different sources, but the main strain on shelters is unwanted or abandoned litters of kittens.

“We had a relatively mild winter season, and the warmer weather has played a role in the higher number of litters cats are having,” Rogers said. “Shelters are used to ‘kitten season,’ but this time period is now extending into many months of the year. That’s why it’s so crucial that every kitten is spayed or neutered.”

Rogers said shelters are doing their best to keep up with the growing demand, but they are struggling due to the ever-increasing number of cats and kittens in need. As part of “There’s No Place Like Home,” the NBSPCA is reminding the public to help ease the strain on shelters by ensuring their cats are sterilized before they start reproducing.

“We encourage all New Brunswickers to adopt their cats from a shelter or rescue that includes spaying or neutering pets as part of the adoption fee,” Rogers said. “Typically, this is the most affordable option for pet families. It’s important to understand that ‘free’ kittens are never really free.”

Low-income pet families that already have a cat that they cannot afford to have spayed or neutered may be able to access support from the NBSPCA’s Happy Tails Fund. The program has recently launched and offers limited availability, but the NBSPCA hopes to expand services across the province over the coming months with the help of additional veterinarian partners. Low-income pet families or veterinarians looking for more information can email [email protected] or [email protected].

In addition to an increase in unwanted kitten litters, the NBSPCA has seen a rise in the number of lost cats, which are taking up additional shelter resources. Members of the public are asked to take necessary precautions to keep their cats safe at home. Along with having them spayed or neutered, cat owners should have their pets microchipped as soon as possible and keep their registered contact information updated.

“In a perfect world, every cat would get the forever home they deserve,” Rogers said. “We know that the stray population isn’t going away anytime soon, but there are simple steps every pet owner can take to reduce the number of strays in the future. The more cat parents pitch in, the more cats and kittens we can save.”

All the other dogs and my staff LOVE me. But of course, that's because I am very lovable.

I'm a 6-month-old female beagle mix and you might notice a bit of an accent when I bark.... that's because I'm from the Gander SPCA in Newfoundland!!

Yes b'y, I'm a Come from Away!!!

I traveled all the way to New Brunswick to get me eyes checked AND to find a new family to love and admire me!

Yes, I have some eye issues and need to have drops but once you gaze into my gorgeous eyes, you will forget all about drops.

My staff is teaching me commands, but I call them tricks. I know I have to SIT to get treats, and I love DOWN! PAW has me a bit confused, is that one paw? both paws? right paw? left paw? Too much detail for me.

Well, I'm going on and on about me. What about you?

Meet Freda (aka Miss Fred) :) . Freda arrived at the FSPCA as a stray in Dec 2023. A little bit about her - if you have a tennis ball in your hand she will pretty much respond to any name, truth be told. She enjoys long walks and is quite affectionate with "her" humans. She will play chuck it with a tennis ball for hours on end. That is certainly something you can use to your advantage to help with her focus and responsiveness to her handler. She is slowly learning that to play the game she needs to not be pushy and demanding - it is a process but she is getting there. Freda is a boxer mix (not sure what the mix is) and is about 5 years of age and is spayed. She is reactive (barks, growls, hair stands up on her back) when she sees strangers, dogs, cats, etc. An experienced owner with a lot of patience will be her ideal family. Our dog team have done a lot of behaviour modification work with Freda. She is getting there however time, patience and consistency will be a key piece for her new owners. Rudy has been with us since Nov 2023. He is still looking for his furever home. He is a big boy with a BIG 💗 & such a love bug. He is 5yrs old.
