Exciting news this morning!

We have two new additions to the barn - Penny's Never Out of Style (Levi) and Penny's Cocoamo (Mo) just arrived from Chilliwack.

Huge thank you to Penney Rex Rabbitry for not just breeding quality rabbits, but getting these guys to Nanaimo so I only had to take the little ferry!

You've heard of herding cats? Herding rabbits is harder. I tried to get adorable lined up "family portraits" of this round's kits... But had to give up, these were the best I was able to pull off 🤣

It's been a challenging breeding round this time, but we are two weeks post delivery of the first 3 litters of 2024 and hopefully it'll be all smooth sailing now.

- Malyza was first to kindle, 15 days ago with a nice litter of 7. Unfortunately a couple days ago one of the kits was too greedy to let go of the milk bar and got dragged out of the nest box where it ended up getting too cold to survive. She currently still has 6 healthy kits, 2 blacks, 3 castor and one black otter (my youngest daughter has dubbed the black otter "Benjamin" and we're hoping it will turn out to be a little girl to retain for the breeding program)

- Lola had 9 kits 14 days ago, but was refusing to feed them on her own for the first week so I was busy making sure she did so by placing her in the box several times a day. In spite of my trying to help supplement feedings we lost the runt. The good news is that she's been doing an ok job mothering since then and her nestbox is the most colourful of the round with castor, opal, blue and ruby eyed whites

- Jessica had a lovely litter of 7 eleven days ago, but one was a runt which failed to thrive and died 4 days after birth in spite of my efforts to hand feed it. Her remaining kits, are all castor and doing well - which is a huge improvement in her mothering skills. This litter was her last chance to prove she could be a good mom (her previous litters needed a lot of help from me and a bunny foster mom to raise), so I'm really pleased that this time she's been doing a great job.

Malyza held out extra long again (35 days), but finally presented us with hers and Bugs' kits - just 2, but they are two of the absolute biggest newborn kits I've ever seen... As brand new newborns they are easily double the size of Jessica's biggest kits are currently at almost 4 days old. 😳

Jessica's litter of 7 has been hanging in there but not really thriving, so Malyza is now also fostering the smallest 3 of the 7 and hopefully things will change quickly with each doe raising a moderate sized litter.

These are likely our last litters now until fall so that the does can have some time off as our weather gets hotter - rabbits do much better in cooler temperatures than hotter ones so we try not to breed during the hottest months.

Jessica has delivered 7 live kits, she had one stillborn - so far she's being a good mommy and let me check everyone was healthy. They're all on the small side right now, but hopefully that changes fast once her milk comes in!

She's blurry because I didn't want to bug her by opening the door, but there's serious nest construction going on and we're on kindle watch for Malyza and Jessica who are both due anytime now.

Malyza was bred to Bugs Bunny - we're hoping for an improvement on his body type and her size.
Jessica was bred to Roger Rabbit - it's her first time so our main hope for this litter is good mothering instinct from her and a healthy litter... But it has potential to produce impressive size and fast growth rates.

Growing up fast, just past the 6 week mark! 4 of the 6 kits from Malyza's litter (the biggest 4) have now moved into their first apartment without mom and so far doing well. The two smallest kits will spend the next week with mom to make sure she has a chance to dry up her milk supply and give them a little less competition for food and then everyone will be split into grow out pens according to s*x and momma will get to enjoy some RnR in her own space again.

The buns are getting bigger - 4wks old now and everyone is around 1.5lbs. I had planned to try posing them up for the photos, but they had other plans so instead we just have cute bunny pics

These Easter bunnies are learning to eat, drink and play like big bunnies, just over 3 weeks old now and so entertaining to watch and snuggle. I love this age! 💗

Roger waiting for his turn to be weighed after his pedicure today.
I try to trim nails every 2-4 weeks (depends on the rabbit) to prevent them from getting caught on the wire floors of the cage. It also offers me a great opportunity to check them all over. Roger is the only one who who really isn't a fan he likes to squeak and fuss about it, but he let me get it done. He's 8 #3.3oz today and apparently had opinions about that too because he tried to throw the scale off the table 😂

This little chunk must've refused to let go of a ni**le when momma was done feeding (it has definitely been well fed), it was found outside the nestbox, pretty chilly and lethargic, Cailin snuggled it back to warm and wriggly so we've attempted to return it to its siblings - hopefully it makes it!

The little buns @ 4 days old. They're starting to be not naked and more bouncy. Looking like we have 2 solid black, 1 castor and 3 black otter but we won't be absolutely sure until their fur comes in more.
It's amazing how fast they grow!

Malyza has just had her kits!
She was a little anxious about me being in the nest so I just did a quick feel to make sure everyone was squirming and feeling warm, hopefully she will let me get a better look tomorrow

Everyone all tucked in and snuggly warm during my last check - there are 6 😊

Roger was really enjoying his Apple tree twigs this morning so I had to video the fun! Apple twigs make fantastic chew toys for rabbits and help to wear their teeth which grow continuously throughout their lives. Roger thinks they also make fantastic toys!
