June 1st is the start of Heartworm season in southern Ontario.

This is the time by which we have had enough warm days for the Heartworm larvae to develop to an infective stage and be carried by the mosquitos to our dogs.

Traditionally, a Heartworm preventative is given once monthly throughout the summer months to kill off any Heartworm larvae that might have been transmitted from a mosquito bite into your dog’s blood, before the larvae can form into the stringy white worms that live and breed in the blood vessels around the heart. Any dog that is bitten by a mosquito is at risk. As a result, it is recommended that all dogs who spend any amount of time outside be put on preventative medication throughout the summer months as part of a Heartworm prevention plan.

Don't forget to start your prevention June 1st,
then once a month until November.
Give us a call today if you are still needing prevention for your pet.

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by bacteria carried mainly by rodents and wildlife. Pets can become infected through contact with the urine of infected animals such as raccoons, skunks and rats. Dogs can also contract the disease by swimming in stagnant water or drinking contaminated puddle water. If your outdoor activities could put your dog at risk, speak to your veterinarian to learn if the leptospirosis vaccine is suitable for your pet.

Another instalment of our Pet of the Month!!

We first met Sheamus in May 2023.
He is a 15-year-old Border Terrier who had started to slow down. Sheamus was showing signs of discomfort and was not as happy to go for his usual walks. His owner brought him in to see us as they were concerned with his quality of life.

After an in-depth assessment, medications were prescribed to help with his mobility. Ongoing check ups are performed to monitor his changing needs. We are thrilled to report that Seamus has been doing amazing.
Sheamus is happy and his owner is seeing such a great improvement in his overall health.
Sheamus comes into the clinic full of beans and wagging his tail.

It just goes to show you that age is not a disease. There is a lot that we can do to improve the quality of life for our aging pets.

Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

Safe watching our friends!

Lyme Disease is now very prevalent in Ontario.

Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria (Borrelia burgdorferi) and is transmitted through a bite from an infected black legged tick. As the bacteria infects the body, it resides in the joints and kidneys of your pets.

What are the signs of Lyme disease?
Fever, lethargy, joint pain, lameness, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia.
It can take 2-5 months before your pet will show symptoms, while often pets carry the disease but don't show symptoms at all.

If you find a tick on your dog it is very important to follow up with a blood test 6-8 weeks later to ensure they are not infected with Lyme. Early treatment is best!

Can I get Lyme disease from my dog?
No, but you can get it from an infected tick bite.
Monthly prevention is key!
