Great reminder, ticks are still active

Hi Everyone! As the weather begins to cool, we are seeing an increase in tick activity. They are out in full force right now. The tick in the photo was pulled off a client's dog this morning and brought in for us to identify. Please keep your dogs and cats safe by continuing with flea and tick medication whenever the temperature is consistently above 0 degrees.

You've heard of the saying "It takes a community to raise a child." The same applies to service dogs in training. Everyone we met played a role in Blue's training and development. Thank you to the teachers, coaches and coordinators for inviting us to be part of your communities. It meant so much knowing how much support Blue had.

Sadly the time has come, our time together has come to an end. The decision was made to change Blue's career down a different path. He won't be a service dog, he will still have an important role to play in someone's life. Each dog we work with have different things to teach us. Blue and I learned a lot from each other. We'll carry around those lessons with us wherever we go.

Thank you Autism Dog Services for bringing Blue into our lives. He's a remarkable dog and was a privledge to raise. Good luck on your next adventures Blue, Auntie Jessie loves you.

We had a wonderful time at the Oakville fire prevention event with the Autism Dog Services team today. Blue made so many friends, created positive associations to new sounds and settled nicely with the other SDIT (service dog in training) teams.

We had a fabulous time representing Autism Dog Services at the Pet Expo last saturday. We joined K9 Medic Tanner at the Pages, Pens and Paws booth. We spent the afternoon educating people about ADS and the importance of service dogs.

I learned a lot about Tanner's special job as a K9 Medic. It's a new program in Haldimand County that pairs paramedics with wellness dogs for fire hall, police station, hospital visits. K9 Tanner works hard comforting those who need him.

I was happily surprised when Dozer the pig came to visit. Blue has encountered Dozer from the Christmas Pet Expo last year, this was the first time Blue practiced settling in close proximity.

Some basic tips..

Reinforcement drives behaviour. If the outcome is worth it, they’ll keep doing it. Remember it’s from their perspective, not yours.

Dominance is a thing. You just don’t have to worry about it.

Not all dogs are equal. You’ll have a very different experience with a bull dog compared to a husky. Genetics really do matter.

Aggression is normal. Don’t lose your mind if or more likely when it occurs. I guarantee, you won’t go through your life never arguing with anyone again.

If you don’t like something your dog is doing, don’t keep letting them do it. If they keep running off, put them on a lead. If they keep jumping on people, put them on a lead. You can’t train a dog if you don’t manage the bad stuff.

Dogs focus more on visual stuff, not verbal stuff. Concentrate more on what you’re doing, not what you’re saying.

Dogs have needs. Before you expect them to behave how you want them to, make sure you’re letting them be a dog.

If you want the dog on your sofa or the bed, let them on. They won’t try and take over the household no matter what anyone tells you.

The dog daddy is a terrible dog trainer and a massive t**t.

All the best.

This cheeky little guy is looking for a new family. Pinto was brought to Canada 6 years ago from the Caribbean . Unfortunately the family circumstances have changed and they are no longer able to give him the love and attention he deserves.

Pinto can struggle with anxiety and fear aggression around other some dogs and people in busy/excitable circumstances but can be redirected. He is about 40 pounds. Not tested with cats

If you would be interested in fostering our adopting this sweet guy. Please complete an application on our website www.furkidsrescue.ca

An unregulated industry means anyone can call themselves a dog trainer or dog behaviorist without qualifications.
07/12/2023

An unregulated industry means anyone can call themselves a dog trainer or dog behaviorist without qualifications.

We strongly urge anyone thinking of employing the services of a canine professional to do some VERY thorough research before you proceed.

Unfortunately the dog training industry in the UK (and many other countries) is unregulated, so ANYONE can call themselves a dog trainer or dog behaviourist even with zero qualifications.

A genuine dog trainer or behaviourist will be very happy to tell you their exact qualifications, experience and explain exactly how they work.

Don’t be fobbed of by vague comments like ‘I’m a qualified behaviourist’ or “I’ve worked with hundreds of dogs...”
Glossy websites and large numbers of followers on social media do not guarantee that the trainer will be competent or ethical.

It’s important to ask exactly WHO the trainer studied with and what their exact qualifications and methods are.

If they won’t tell you then our advice would be to walk away.

Sadly we still see some individuals using violent methods to bully and intimidate dogs. This violence is sometimes even perpetuated by some dog rescue groups.

Examples of violent methods include physical intimidation, water sprays, ‘alpha’ rolls, ‘rank reduction’ techniques, prong, choke and shock collars.

Many of our dogs have already endured abuse and intimidation by humans before they were rescued.

For the sake of your dogs, please be very careful who you work with.

Adopters can sometimes feel alone and desperate for help, and some unethical dog trainers prey on that vulnerability.

Checklist:

Ask lots of questions. ✔️
Check their independent google reviews. ✔️
Be ready to advocate for your dog if any situation feels uncomfortable. ✔️
Always observe your dog’s body language and respect what they are communicating.✔️

Look for a trainer or behaviourist who clearly states that they use force free, modern, science based dog training methods and avoid anyone who has a vague website or who talks about ‘balanced training’, ‘pack leaders’, being the ‘alpha’ or ‘dominance/ rank reduction training.’

Our dogs deserve better than this!

Please share and warn friends, colleagues and fellow adopters.

Thank you.🙏🏼

We said goodbye to our student friends. Thank you St.Joseph for allowing us into your kindergarten class. Thank you St.Fx high school for having us on a weekly basis since fall. We're grateful for all the friends we've made.

Blue had his first boat ride experience. He settled under the passenger's footwell and was happy to snooze.

We attended the highland games and celebrated Canada day in the Glenn! Such a great experience.

Although common tick habitats include wooded areas, tall grasses and leaf litter, you can find a tick just about anywhere - even your own backyard. Since they can latch onto a host quite easily, it's important to always thoroughly tick check yourself and your pets, and use parasite prevention for your pets. Speak to your veterinarian to learn more about pets and tick safety.

Sometimes family photos work out and it makes Auntie Jessie's day! Happy to say I'm back offering weekly sniffari walks. Thank you to those who've been patiently waiting.

Sniffari hikes are about meeting the needs of the dogs. They get ample opportunity to sniff, forage for tossed treats, play, practice impulse control and recalls.

Movies, kindergarten class, new handlers and Emmett's birthday pawrty.

ADS Cash and ADS Blue visited a senior kindergarten class in Brampton. What an amazing opportunity for all involved. Since the boys may work with young kids in their role as a service dogs, exposure around kids is important.

Cash and Blue helped teach the students about service dogs and dogs training to be service dogs. The students were fantastic at ignoring the dogs, helping with distractions and with greetings.

We attended our first dog birthday pawrty and loved ever minute. They played, chased, wrestled and made some mud angels. Bath time was required and completely worth it!. Happy first birthday Emmett 💗

Blue celebrated Easter with our family up north. We watched the ice melt and went on lots of sniffari walks.

We continue with our weekly visits to St.Fx. high school in Milton. The students recognize him and look forward to his visit. Our friend E wanted to walk Blue, he was so excited and did a great job walking him.

Great idea to keep our feline friends entertained.

I'm super excited to share this post! I have been working on this for a long time. I wanted to first give a shout out to my inspirations if I may. I was inspired to create this after seeing the awesome Play Infographic work of Doggie Drawings by Lili Chin and Dr. Mikel Delgado of What Your Cat Wants, but that inspiration combined with getting to know .png’s art really brought it together. This is the same artist who has created images for my Fundamentally Feline t-shirts and other swag items. She is so talented! My hope is to bring you an entire series of these on a variety of topics (in all of my spare time!)

Please share far and wide. If you are a vet clinic, shelter or rescue group and you would like to have a poster for your space, please visit my printful shop to purchase a full sized poster (12x18). Here is that link https://www.fundamentallyfeline.com/products/foraging-101-infographic/

As someone who focuses on fear cases, I have a disproportionate amount of people who view their dog's fear issues as behavior "problems" that need "fixing" instead of recognizing that fear is not disobedience. The more I was thinking about this, the more I realized that this is another example of dog training being unregulated and the continued damage that is causing to dogs and their owners.

Our society is full of people who shame others for having dogs who behave like dogs, because of this dominance construct where we expect owners to "control" their dogs.

But here's the thing, for most pet dogs, there's really only a handful of cues (I prefer that term to commands) that are really, really important for most owners. Is it life or death if your dog sits 100% of the time when you ask them? Nope, not usually.

So, wait, I'm a trainer and I'm saying not to do training? Not exactly. What I'm saying is there are more important things than robotic obedience. Read more in this week's post.
