How often has your dog acted like it wasn’t fed? This is a great way to ensure there are no second suppers.
Dogs are self serving creatures and if they can get away with something that benefits them, I assure you they will! try!
As ridiculous as this meme is, it speaks to the reality of having strangers talk, approach, or boldly try to pet your dog without interacting with you.
Service dogs are on another level but every dog owner needs to learn to be their dogs best advocate.
Speak up if you’re uncomfortable with an encounter, your dog will appreciate it!!!

Throwback Thursday; 2 decades ago! My two delinquents that started it all
Albert, an American Bulldog developed human reactivity & later aggression as a result of no fault. He spent the majority of his time with my late wife whom was disabled and he felt that he needed to protect.
Tribe, an Alaskan Malamute developed dog aggression as a result of being mauled by a loose dog, at the age of 7 months. She never looked at another dog the same way.
I do what I do because I want to help those struggling with behaviours that are not acceptable. Those that just require guidance to become better are a dream client.

The same holds true for dogs after a good brushing, a bath, or a mani & pedi. Don’t deny your dogs the finer things in life.
If you can’t do it there are many good groomers in our local area that would be happy to book an appointment for you.
Miss Maisy is a Boarder Collie that can be a litte controlling. While natural instincts can be beneficial in many ways, misguided behaviours can become problematic. Now she looks for guidance in her decision making process and has much more impulse control.
Mr Buddy and his family are maturing the Balanced Doghouse way! His youthful exuberance sometimes gets the better of him.
Over the next 3 months we shall refine his already amazing foundation and build his impulse control and seek permission in his decision making choices.
Sibbling Saturdays with Seoclaid & Bach!
These two little happy fellows are actual littermates without any of the potential sibling unhealthy competitiveness that may develop.
Typically I recommend against getting 2 sibbling puppies. If they are too adorable to resist, I highly recommend opposite s*x pups to avoid potential sibling rivalries.

I 100% thought of our dogs when initially choosing the colours in our home. Problem now is that our dogs have a different colour scheme.
Give a big Wednesday Welcome to Miss MonAmie and her “L’ambie”! They arrived this week for a mini two week reinforcement Board & Train.
We offer a variety of programs at multiple price points based on clients needs.
Her owners opted to include time with us at the Balanced Doghouse as an add on to one of our programs. While here we will help solidify the drills, behaviours, and expectations asked of her; along with exposing her to new people and places while having her retain focused attention.

Did I just see that? For the first time in decades of lake side living I discovered a leech on one of the dogs. Typically the fur prevents leeches from attaching but with minimal coverage between Yoda’s toes one was able to, which was easily removed using salt.
Parasites are everywhere ; on land and in water. Check your dogs carefully after all outdoor fun.
Miss Abby is one happy go lucky girl!

It’s hot! Too hot! Temps warm up really fast when the weather is as it is. When it’s comfortable to be outside be sure to stay off the main beat and enjoy the long grass and cooler wooded area.
With the nicer weather we want to be outside more and of course we want our dogs to come along and enjoy the adventures!
Ground temperatures can cause some major issues for your dogs paws though, and different surfaces heat up & hold heat differently. If you place your hand on the ground and cannot hold it there for 7 seconds without issues then it is too hot for your dog to be walking on without protection❗
Did you know that dogs sweat through the pads of their paws? If their paws are too hot it effects their bodies ability to properly sweat which can lead to increased body temperature, as sweating helps to cool down the body.

From mid June into the first week of July is laying season for snapping turtles. They are often found on dirt roads and gravel driveways this time of year as the seek out a suitable spot for their eggs.
Monday motivation!
Learning can happen anytime and in all weather conditions. I often remind clients that stimulating the mind can be as exhausting as physical work. Keep this thought in mind when there are torrential rains, snowstorms, or extreme heat keeping you from normal outdoor activities.
Today is NOT a dog day of summer!
It will be much too hot to be left in cars & pavement temperatures will make asphalt temps rise quickly.
Please leave your dogs to chill at home!

It’s gonna only get warmer. Many people think heavy fur or Nordic breeds can’t handle the heat. In reality their double coat system not only keeps them warm in winter but also cooler in summer. Shaving or thinning their coats can actually make them more susceptible to heat and cold.
