We took advantage of this great deal yesterday for our team and the lovely ladies at the Cafe went as far as generously offering to hand deliver our shakes and smoothies! As temperatures rise, our dogs are counting on us to make sure that they stay cool and comfortable in the heat 🥵
Sweet Chloe is keeping cool in her COOLER DOG cooling collar. This machine washable, hi-vis reflective collar comes complete with two sets of FlexiFreeze ice sheets, convenient for keeping one in use and the other in the freezer for quick changes, ready to battle the heat at a moments notice.

Be heat safe. Don’t leave your pets in a hot car. Even just a few minutes can be life-threatening. Keep them home safe in a cool environment, provide plenty of fresh water and reward with frozen treats on these hot days.

With heat warnings issued for parts of the province today, it's critical to remember that leaving pets in a hot vehicle can be extremely dangerous and even life-threatening. Protect your four-legged friends - don't leave pets in hot cars!

Weatherman is reporting some extreme temperatures in the coming days. 😃💦☀️
While it’s exciting for us islanders to feel the heat of the sun without having to go down south, our furry friends need our help to protect them against the elements.

Below is a list of tips and tricks that will help ensure your dogs safety and happiness in the extreme heat.

1. Adjust your walking routine

Walk your dog early in the day or evening when the ground is cooler. Even on a pleasant, breezy day, the temperature of asphalt can rise to 52°C when the sun is at its hottest.

2. Know how to spot heat stroke

Heatstroke is one of the most common illnesses in dogs during warm weather and happens when your dog is no longer able to regulate their body temperature. Symptoms include excessive panting and drooling, very red gums, vomiting or diarrhoea and weakness. If left unchecked, heatstroke can be fatal.

3. Keep hydrated

Provide lots of fresh, clean water to prevent dehydration. There are lots of ways you can encourage your dog to drink more…try playing with garden hose / sprinkler, making pet ice lollies and flavouring their drinking water. You may also want to invest in a travel water bowl or portable bottle to ensure they have something to drink while on the go.

4. Get wet

Playing with water is a great way to cool down your dog in hot weather and it’s a lot of fun! Try setting up a shallow kiddie pool in your garden to refresh them while they play. Provide water toys to stimulate their minds & bodies.
**Always watch your pet when they’re playing around water and never let them swim unsupervised.

5. Provide shady spots

If your dog loves to play outside, it’s important to ensure they have lots of shaded areas where they can relax away from the sun. Shade created by trees is better than a dog house as it allows air to circulate freely. Be aware of how the sun moves throughout the day to ensure your dog always has a shady spot to sit in.

6. Frozen treats

Treat your pup to some yummy frozen treats. Try frozen raw bones, FRO GO (frozen goats milk), make your own frozen treats using bone broth or goats milk in a treat mold or using dog friendly ice cream mix. You can also try freezing peanut butter in a Kong. They’ll be happy and healthy all while keeping cool.

7. Circulate cool air

Keep your home cool and comfortable by setting up a few fans in various rooms or, if you have it, air conditioning. Keeping curtains or blinds drawn will also minimise the amount of heat that comes through windows. If you have tiled floor, be aware that these too can get very hot if they’re in direct sunlight.
**Remember to keep oscillating fans and exposed cables out of paws reach.

8. Invest in cooling accessories like cooling mats, cooling bandanas, or cooling vests.

Dogs cool themselves down from the bottom up, so it’s important that their paws and stomach don’t get too hot. Laying out a cooling mat for them to lie on is a simple, effective way to keep your dog cool in the heat. Cooling bandanas and vests are activated by water, which evaporates, and mimics sweating and so cools your dog down. Cooling collars are placed in the freezer and offer immediate relief from rising temperatures.

Just a friendly reminder on this highly anticipated 🌖ECLIPSE DAY to keep your precious pets safe. They are completely dependant on us for their well-being. As responsible pet owners, we must do our due diligence to protect their eyes and keep them comfortable and secure.

The total solar eclipse will be visible and will turn day into night. This has to the potential to be very harmful to pet and human eyes alike if direct eye contact is made. The temperature will drop and animals can get moody, antsy, anxious or agitated before, during and after as the sudden darkness will turn sunlight into night.

Best practice would be to keep your animals inside with curtains drawn and/or blinds closed. Provide plenty of fresh water, have kennels or crates available for safe spaces to den, if needed.

We won’t see another total solar eclipse like this for 375 years so enjoy, all while keeping safety measures in mind!
