🙏 Desperate plea 🙏

Waiting since March & May! It’s hard no to be discouraged, it’s hard not to feel like we are letting these beautiful dogs down. 💔

It’s becoming more and more clear that there is no huge list waiting to adopt dogs in Newfoundland anymore. We have 4 dogs waiting for homes right now. At one time we would have dozens of applications come in for any dog posted. Now it’s much different, especially for dogs who have issues like Jip & Hazel.

Hazel & Jip have had no luck and very little interest. They are both aggressive to other animals and need to be the only pet in the home. They both need experienced owners and people who are committed to them. People who truly want them and will love them.

Hazel has been in our care since March. She absolutely loves the staff and volunteers, a little weary of strangers but warms up quickly. She is so loveable it hurts to know she spends most her time alone. With 4 dogs and 58 cats there is not a lot of one on one time for any of the animals although we try our best. Hazel loves any attention she gets. She has basic training, listens well. She is strong and active but loves flopping down on her bed as well. It is so painful she’s been waiting so long when she has so much love to give. 💔 Hazel is around 6 years old, spayed, fully vaccinated. She needs a home as an only and does have free rehab training (for dog aggression) located in Clarenville.

Jip has similar needs to Hazel. He needs to be the only pet in the home with an experienced owner. He has changed so much since coming to the shelter in May. He doesn’t need someone who’s going to be harsh, just patient and strong. He is a massive puppy who does want to please humans and needs help learning manners. Jip is also neutered, fully vaccinated and has free training (for dog aggression) located in Clarenville.

There are so many judgements when it comes to holding these dogs. So many people have questioned:

What will happen to them?
When will you euthanize them?
Why can’t another rescue take them?

I don’t know what will happen to them but I know what won’t. They will not be euthanized, they will not be snuffed out because their past was unkind. These are beautiful, loveable dogs. It’s not their fault they ended up here and it’s not their fault they haven’t had all the love and opportunities other animals have. They deserve happy endings and they have to find it. That said living in a shelter FULL OF ANIMALS is NOT suitable for 2 animal aggressive dogs. They need our help, they need homes!

I have reached out to Akita rescues/breeders for help. If you know anyone, anywhere who would make a great home for these dogs please apply. Please. We are desperate for them.

Sweet young pup Duke is looking for a new home! He can’t understand how he hasn’t been scooped up so is putting on his best puppy dog eyes. 👀😻 Duke is a 2 year old lab mix weighing in at 50 pounds. He is a long and lanky fella! Duke’s been treated, vaccinated and neutered. Duke has basic training - knows sit, paw, lay down, etc but needs work with his social skills. Duke requires slow introductions to animals and people. Barks and becomes excited or nervous easily depending on the situation. He loves going for drives and walks but does pull on the leash. Duke is the type of dog who wants to be right next to you. He’s happy, hyper and would do best where he would get a lot of attention and exercise. If you’re interested in Duke please apply at the link below! ❤️

Gentle giant alert 🚨✨

Have a XL space in your heart & home? Hugo is ready to fill it! 🥰

Hugo is the most stunning Anatolian Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix. He is 2 years young with a birthday in November. Unfortunately he’s not yet neutered and will need to be by his future home. His dream home would be one where he could go with you on adventures all day and then cuddle on the couch all night. He loves attention and has an XL amount of love to give. He’s estimated around 130 pounds and has a head the size of a polar bear! 🐻‍❄️ Hugo is said to be friendly to every dog he has ever met, and is good with cats aswell. He’s also kennel trained and has good basic training aside from recall training and is said to be quite naughty off leash. 🙈 Hugo and his big brown eyes are ready to find the home of his dreams. 🙏 Please share and tag anyone who might be a match for him! 🤍

It's HOT out there! ☀️ 🔥 Please be cautious about having your dog accompany you to outdoor events (especially if they are on pavement!) and be sure they have lots of shade and fresh water when they do need to be outside. Do you know how to recognize signs of heat stroke in dogs?

If you observe these signs, get your dog out of the heat and to a veterinarian immediately - heat stroke can escalate fast!

ADOPTION PENDING

Mama T***y - looking for a home in St. John’s if possicle! Mama T***y (now named Daisy) was recently adopted from our shelter but unfortunately not able to get along with the dog in the home. She’s in St. John’s so we would love to find a home there for her. She had a hard drive in from GFW and would be a sin to make her do it again unless she has to! If you’re interested please apply below!

A little note from her current owner:
“I would share that Daisy is a sweet petite kitty with the prettiest eyes, she loves the affection of humans and she loves to have a chat with other cats through the window so I suspect she’d enjoy the company of another feline friend. Having had two litters of kittens herself and then fostering the babies of another mama, at the young age of 1-2 she’s already proven to be a doting and loving mom and now she’s looking for someone to love and dote on her so she can be the young, playful kitty that she deserves to be!”

ADOPTED!

Duke is a 1 year old lab mix who’s arrived looking for a new home. In his short life he’s already on his 4th home. No fault of his, just different circumstances but very sad none the less. He is so sweet and has so much love to give. Let’s hope his next home is his forever one. 🤞❤️ Duke is not yet neutered but has his puppy vaccines. He gets along with dogs & cats (aside from being a little too friendly and attempting to mount some dogs) and has lived with young children for a lot of his life. Duke is about 50 pounds of solid cuddle monster. He loves to be outside but also wants to be in curled up on the couch with you. He is ready to be someone’s very best friend! ❤️

If you’re interested in Duke please apply at the link below! Specify “Duke the second” or “Duke 2” since we currently have two dogs named Duke!

UPDATE: Only Jip & Hazel are left looking for homes!

📣 Attention all dog lovers 📣
❗️Good homes needed❗️

We need you now! The shelter is at capacity for dogs with more requests for help every single day. It is overwhelming knowing that more animals need help than we have space to provide.

Our 2 Akitas Jip & Hazel have been here months now with no suitable homes coming forward. These dogs love people and long to have human contact. Both Jip & Hazel are aggressive to animals and are looking for homes or fosters who don’t have any other pets. They have free training with Ruff Around the Edges - Dog Training and Rehabilitation. Both are capable of learning and changing! They just need humans to help them get there. Jip is 2 years old and neutered. Hazel is around 6 and spayed!

Duke is a 2 year old lab mix. He’s not yet neutered, knows basic obedience and is still very much a puppy! He needs slow introductions and an active family.

Zeus is a 3 year old neutered male husky/lab mix. He is good with other large dogs and grown up with cats. He loves to go on adventures.

Jake is a 3 year old Beagle who just arrived. He’s so scared he’s shaking but finds comfort in humans. Jake is not yet neutered but on wait list. He’s small in stature and has the sweetest freckles.

Please if you’re interested in meeting any of the dogs - apply! Once approved you can come and fall in love. ❤️ Until they are adopted there is no physical room for more. Please share and tag anyone who is looking to adopt a best friend.

Hello I'm a bat...
I don't suck your blood and I won't get tangled in your hair.
If I happen to enter your house, please don't hit me with bats or squash me out; it hurts a lot and on such occasions I'm very scared. It was an accident and I didn't mean to scare you.
If I land, I may not be able to get up and I need your help. Just grab a towel and pull me out carefully. I'll fly right away, I promise.
I feed on mosquitoes and many other insects.
Our houses are being demolished to build other buildings and we still have a few places to go. So if I'm flying in your space, turn off the lights and leave the outside light on with the door open, I'll be out shortly.

Please remember to keep your pets safe during this hot weather.

06/20/2024

17 cats have arrived since June started and the requests for more to come in never slack. It seems like every single day someone wants to give u p their pet. Some cases are sad and others are discarded without a second thought. Before you take an animal into your home be sure you have the means and the dedication to keep/care for that animal for its whole life. Make sure there’s a plan to have them spayed and neutered because that is part of responsible pet ownership. With shelters and rescues stuffed to the brim, the constant pressure to take in more animals everyday, do not let your cat have a litter or breed with others!

Lastly if you’re interested in adopting an animal please apply! Once approved, come meet all our adoptables. You don’t have to choose one before you meet them, they will help you choose! Each one deserves a responsible, loving home that will keep them forever. ❤️

So simple and so important 🐾

So simple and so important 🐾

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

Jip’s luck needs to change, the right person needs to see him and read his story. 🙏 Please tag any Akita/large breed lovers who may be interested. Jip’s been in the shelter 4 weeks now with absolutely no interest. He’s desperate for our attention and although we give him as much as possible, it’s not the same as having a home. Jip is only 18 months old and has lots of time to unlearn behaviour. Right now he’s aggressive to other animals - cats and dogs. He must be kept isolated in the shelter and adopted to a home with no other pets. It doesn’t help that we have other dogs in our care so they all have to share their office time with staff/volunteers and take turns playing in the yard. The dog runs are on the list for renovations but this is Jip’s bedroom right now. It’s the only place we have that will keep him and our other animals safe but it doesn’t make it feel better to see that sad face when you walk by. 😞 He deserves better, a family, a loving home. Jip is a handful and a half but loves people. He can’t get enough love. He has never been properly socialized with people or animals though he is learning daily (with people) at the shelter. He jumps, mouths and is used to being yelled at to listen - therefore he doesn’t. He is a strong, 80 pound puppy who needs a strong yet gentle owner. Experience is key and training is a must. Jip is neutered and only 18 months old. He can and will learn to be the best dog ever with the right guidance. Again, absolutely no animals in the household.

Jip is lucky enough to have FREE rehab training set up with Ruff Around the Edges - Dog Training and Rehabilitation. He just needs an owner or foster to get him there! He needs HELP! Please share and tag anyone who might be a good fit or can help Jip out. 🙏🤞❤️

🧡🥲 The golden girls 🥹🧡

Mya & Hawkins are the SWEETEST senior sissies you’ll ever meet. At 15 years young 2 fluffy orange gals have ended up in the shelter through no fault of their own. First of all.. they really don’t seem 15! They have no known health issues, they’re both spayed, in good condition and are as loveable as can be. The girls rush to the front of the cage for pets and love. 😻 It’s really sad when any senior animal comes to the shelter. Their golden years should be spent being pampered, spoiled and cherished! Please help Mya & Hawkins find just that.. the retirement home of their dreams! The girls would be ok with quiet animals who would be “on their level” aka keep to themselves, very chill and not rambunctious.

If you’re interested in adopting them, there is no adoption fee! We just want them to find the best, most comfortable forever home as fast as possible. 💗🤞

❣️ADOPTED❣️ Thank you for all the wonderful applications for Benji ❤️

Have you ever seen a ShihTzu on stilts?
We have one! 😹 Sweet, silly Benji is a long legged ShihTuz mix! He is all paws, very flamboyant, he loves to hug your arm, spin circles and cross his paws. 🥰 This little guy has a BIG personality and will definitely keep you entertained! Benji was given up due to not being good with children. He’s now looking for a home with no young children in the household. At only one year old he’s still a puppy and has started his basic obedience training/tricks. He is smart and capable! Gets along fine with other animals and will need to be neutered as soon as possible. Benji loves to be up on your knee and involved in everything you’re doing. He’s about 15 pounds of pure sunshine! 🐶☀️

His pictures don’t do him justice but this 10 second video will make you fall in love with Benji: https://youtube.com/shorts/lHjSAFQXzrk?si=lr8BlEx643EiEwOG

Hazel is a non registered Akita looking for a special home. She is 7 years young, spayed & vaccinated. Hazel loves people but is known to be aggressive toward other animals. She is lucky enough to be registered for rehab with Ruff Around the Edges - Dog Training and Rehabilitation (at no cost to potential owner) but needs a home willing to transport her there! This centre is located in Clarenville so homes around that area or those willing to commute will be ideal. 🤞✨ During her short time in our care Hazel has shown just how smart and capable she is. She‘s so eager to learn and please people. She already knows basic obedience training and tricks. Though not a huge fan of treats, she listens to those she respects and loves. Akita’s are an athletic, powerful, protective breed. It’s not uncommon for them to be weary of strangers and unknown animals. Experience with this breed would be considered an asset. They’re also known to be silly, affectionate and thrive on human companionship. Hazel has shown all those traits too! You won’t find a greater best friend than Hazel. She has already bonded with many of us at the shelter and we truly want to find her the best suited home possible. 🙏💜 Please share and tag anyone who sounds like a match for our gal!

If you’re interested in adopting please apply at the link below! Our shelter remains closed to the public due to renovations but the adoptions never stop. Please submit an adoption application and wait for approval to visit the animals. 💗😻

Looking for the right homes

Is there anyone out there?

Not to be dramatic but it‘s starting to feel like there is no one for Hazel OR Jip. 💔

They are both aggressive to animals.. living in a building.. full.. of.. animals. 😅 It is getting hard to sustain this living situation. Our shelter cat Jacko is no longer safe to roam the halls he calls home, the cats who escape from their rooms playfully are in jeopardy.. not to mention the fact that both dogs loathe the sight of one another. It’s scary to think what would happen if they ever got in contact by a mistake. This post is not to scare anyone away from them but to tell potential adopters the honest truth. They need to be set up for success with only the right people who can handle them. They are not easy dogs, they have ended up in the shelter because they aren’t easy. Not everyone should or can handle an Akita. That is a fact. With all that aside they are sweet at their core and worthy of love and great homes.

Hazel has grown so much in her listening skills since arriving at the shelter. She loves us and pines for us. She would love a home and would hands down be the most loyal friend you have ever had. 🥹 She is special.. a hard case no doubt but so worthy of a great home and people to love her. She’s spayed, around 6-7 years old. Loves people, can’t be around animals.

Jip is a handful and a half. He has never been properly socialized with people or animals. He jumps, mouths and is used to being yelled at to listen - therefore he doesn’t. He is a strong, 80 pound puppy who needs a strong yet gentle owner. Experience is key and training is a must. Jip is neutered and only 18 months old.
