Back to Pony Club Mini Series ๐How to Find and Take a Heart Rate๐
Normal horse heart rate: 28-48 beats per minute (bpm)
There are 2 basic heart sounds: S1 (lub) and S2 (dub)
- additional heart sounds include S3 and S4 but they are often more difficult to hear
1 lub/dub combination = 1 heart beat
Equipment required: stethoscope ๐ฉบ
Location: place bell of stethoscope along the rib cage at the level of the point of elbow, under the triceps muscles
**Tip: if having difficulty hearing the heart, try moving the front limb forward and pressing harder**
Auscultation, the listening to the sound of the heart, is often easier on the left side of the horse but can be done on the right side as well
To calculate your horse's heart rate, count the number of heart beats in 15 seconds then multiply that number by 4
For example, if you count 9 heart beats in 15 seconds your horse's heart rate is 36 bpm: 9x4 = 36 โค
If you have any questions, send us a DM or drop us a comment
