! Important Information for Dog Owners !

The last couple months there have been potential cases of Distemper present in Grande Prairie and surrounding areas. These cases are unconfirmed, but all animals involved presented with the signs listed below.

Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic dogs and other animals, such as coyotes, ferrets, skunks, wolves and raccoons. It is an incurable, often fatal, multisystemic (affecting multiple organs) disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems. Distemper is caused by the canine distemper virus (CDV).

Signs include:
-Diarrhea and/or vomiting
-Thick yellow discharge from the eyes and nose
-Coughing
-Neurological signs, such as ataxia (stumbling), head tilt, and paralysis.

Prevention:
- Luckily there is a highly effective vaccine for Distemper
-Usually it is contained within the combination vaccine (DA2PPV), given to adults and puppies yearly to every three years depending on your veterinarian and age of the pet.

With this information we highly suggest owners to contact their veterinarians and make sure their pet is up to date on their vaccines.
