When cats see something that they want or get excited about, their pupils change size extremely quickly. This helps to increase the amount of light their eyes receive so they can take in every little bit of movement.
Here is a video of Percy watching a stick waving around - watch how his eyes change the closer he gets to pouncing!
If your cat is on a urinary diet for crystals, DO NOT SWITCH THEM TO ANOTHER FOOD. They will end up with crystals again.
We cannot stress enough the importance of keeping your cat on a prescribed urinary food if they have previously blocked or had issues before. These are urinary crystals collected from a cat with a urinary obstruction. As you can see, that is quite a bit of sludge! That is what causes the urethra to be blocked and prevent your cat from urinating.
This is a life threatening condition that is only prevented/managed with food. Prescription urinary foods are created to dissolve crystals and regulate the pH of the urine to prevent further formation. Without them, a cat that has previously had urinary crystals or a blockage has an extremely high chance of doing so again.
We have had several cases in the last few months of cats that have been switched off of their urinary food because they were doing good on it, and had re-obstructed within a few weeks of the change. These cats NEED to stay on these diets for their own health and safety. It is much easier on you and your pet to keep them on a prescription food rather than trying to deal with the condition that it treats when the situation happens again.
Please, keep your cats on prescription urinary food if they have been put on it. If you have any questions, never hesitate to give us a call at 780 814 8544 and one of our experienced staff can discuss with you.
As chosen by our Prince Percival himself, the winner of our giveaway is Tracy Whipple with Fred and Felix!! They have won the puzzle dish and two bags of treats. Thank you to everyone that sent in photos and participated - we loved to see the cats that have had their lives changed by finding new homes.
Hope everyone is staying warm and safe in our cold winter weather!
Do you know what these are?
Place your guesses in the comments and keep an eye out tomorrow for the correct answer!
And the final tally for our right vs left pawed is:
Right: 6
Left: 5
Thanks to everyone that put in their numbers! It's pretty even all around, but pets definitely have a preference. And as we were informed, it's important to know their dominant side! Especially in agility dogs or horses.
Who knew?
Once again we have to say goodbye and good luck to a team member. Cassie is going to school to become a veterinary technologist!
Most of you know her as the first face you see when you walk into the clinic. Cassie is our lead receptionist, and has been an incredible asset to the clinic for the last two years. We're going to miss her dearly, but we know she will do great in school and return with a whole new set of skills to apply.
Which of course, means showing our appreciation and love by filling her locker with ping pong balls.
Best of luck, Cassie. We'll miss you and we love you, and we will see you when you get back!
Little miss Popcorn from last week is doing great!
Even though she's now missing a leg, she is successfully getting into normal kitten things, such as playing with hands, plants, paper, stuffed toys, grass, pens, and whatever else her little kitten eyes spy.
Tripod life definitely isn't slowing her down!
