TRIGGER STACKING – WHEN BEHAVIOUR HAPPENS “OUT OF THE BLUE”

We’ve all had those days when nothing seems to go right and one frustrating thing after another happens to us, leaving us feeling wound up, stressed and ready to explode at the next unsuspecting person who dares to ask us something.

This “unsuspecting” person may think we have a serious behaviour problem or need anger management therapy, when the truth is that we’ve just had a really bad day or even a few bad days and don’t usually behave like this at all.

Dogs are no different and a behaviour that seems completely out of character or happens “out of the blue” is often caused by “trigger stacking”.

A trigger may be anything that increases a dog’s stress levels and has a negative impact on their emotional, mental or physical state.

These may be small things that we may not even notice or seem insignificant to us, but they are all adding to an increasing “stack” of events that may culminate in out of character behaviour.

When stress levels reach a certain point, the next stressful event, however small, may cause an explosive reaction that is completely unexpected.

Instead of just focusing on a particular behaviour and seeing it as a problem that needs to be prevented, take a step backwards, look at the bigger picture, look at events, circumstances or environmental factors that may have played a role leading up to that behaviour.

Being aware of potential stressors and allowing your dog time to decompress, relax and unwind for a few days will often mean the difference between “normal behaviour” and a behaviour that seems completely out of character.

This family is still grieving the loss of their two year old King Charles Cavalier after she suffocated in a chip bag a few months ago. John DeWitt writes, "First, I’m beyond appreciative of everything you do for this cause, and of my aunt's donation in honor of Millie. It truly means the world to us. My aunt made us aware of your non-profit organization after the incident. Having gone through this experience, I constantly notice how many opportunities there are for it to happen again…and likely how many near-misses occur every day without anyone involved ever noticing.

Losing Millie was one of the worst experiences of my life. She was an 11-pound ball of love – a Blenheim King Charles Cavalier. I was packing for a work trip. I noticed Millie wasn’t in the room playing with me as she typically would be. I stopped and left to check on her. As soon as I turned the corner, I saw her lying on the ground, motionless – with a bag over her tiny little head, which was still compressing as if she might still be breathing. The bag was a small chip bag from Local Foods. It wasn’t a typical chip bag, just wax paper twisted together. We had left it on the dining room table and pushed in all the chairs, but one chair wasn’t pushed in all the way. We believe Millie was able to use the space on the chair seat to hop onto the table and snag the chip bag. I don’t know how long she struggled (I pray it wasn’t that long), and it still amazes me that she couldn’t find a way to get it off – she was so close.

I immediately sprinted to her, ripped off the bag, and started performing CPR while running to grab my keys. Because the bag was still compressing, I thought there was a chance. Before I knew it, I was driving as fast as possible en route to Vergie 24/7. I had called them on the way to explain the situation and that I would be coming in hot, and was ensured they would be ready. I performed CPR the entire way and until I handed her to the staff at Vergie. I estimate that it only took ~10 minutes for the whole ordeal. It all happened so fast. The only thing I knew for sure was that Millie was in bad shape, and needed a miracle.

The staff at Vergie is exceptional and did everything possible to save Millie. As soon as they stabilized her with meds and put her on oxygen, they let me go back and stay with her. I was there for several hours, and she remained motionless without any natural movements. She was still alive though, which made it difficult to convey the situation to my wife and kids – who were still expecting her to come home. Millie slept in a hyperbaric chamber that night, and the staff continued doing everything they could. The following day, just as Kate and I arrived to visit, they attempted to see how she would respond without meds, and she immediately started to regress. They did everything possible to stabilize her, but we soon learned there wasn’t much time left. We were able to say our goodbyes and put her to rest. She will forever be missed.

I understand that many people go through this terrible situation. Please feel free to share. Thanks again for everything that you do to bring awareness to pet suffocation."

We like to remind everyone that all sizes of dogs are vulnerable to pet suffocation - from 11 pound pups like sweet Millie to 120 pound Great Danes. No dog, no matter how big or small, can win a battle against lack of oxygen. Please share in honor of Mille, gone too soon.

It’s National Stress Awareness Day…

Did you know that sniffing is incredibly important for our dogs! It activates a key part of their brain that releases dopamine, a chemical crucial for regulating stress. This natural behaviour not only helps them self-soothe but also reduces anxiety and channels excess energy into calmer, more focused actions.

Outstanding!

Purple Dog offers private lessons for people who want to learn how to train their dogs effectively, and without physical punishment!

Why Private lessons?? Private lessons allow for one on one attention to detail you cannot possibly get in a group. There are no embarrassing questions and nothing you can't ask about. It is always "your turn". After years of teaching large group classes, I know for sure that individual lessons are more effective. These are your lessons taught on your schedule.

What about the cost? Cost wise - private lessons are so much more effective for the learners, that you can often learn more, with less classroom time. These are your lessons - you can spread your lessons out to every two weeks or more, or less - depending on your success rate.

What if my dog needs socializing? If your dog is over 18 weeks of age, he/she needs to be able to trust you and work with you, in a variety of situations. Dogs older than 18 weeks of age are over their socialization window and what they need for the next 18 months, is consistent training. Starting with less distractions allows you to gain skills and allows your dog to learn safely. Once you have some foundations (attention & calmness) working in a setting with other dogs provides great distractions. It is not necessary to take your shy, or overly excited dog into a room full of the same, for them to learn to respond to, trust, and depend on - you - the handler (quite the opposite in fact).
