Thankful Thursday: A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Amazing Clients

At Muskoka Bay Animal Clinic, we feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a compassionate and supportive community. Every day, we are reminded of how lucky we are to have clients who not only trust us with the care of their beloved pets but also show such kindness and understanding to our staff.

Your Trust Means Everything
Caring for your pets is our passion, and we are honored that you entrust us with their health and well-being. Whether it’s a routine check-up or a more serious concern, we know how important your pets are to you, and we don’t take that responsibility lightly.

Your Kindness Keeps Us Going
Veterinary care can be challenging at times, but your patience and kindness toward our team make all the difference. Every smile, every word of encouragement, and every 'thank you' brightens our day and helps us continue to do what we do. Your compassion for your pets and respect for our team makes our clinic a positive place for everyone who walks through the door.

We’re Grateful for Your Ongoing Support
Through every ‘happy visit,’ and every milestone in your pet’s life. We truly value the relationships we’ve built with you and your pets, and we look forward to continuing to provide the best possible care for your furry family members for years to come.

From all of us at Muskoka Bay Animal Clinic, thank you for being the wonderful clients that you are. Your trust, kindness, and support mean the world to us!

🐾 With gratitude,
The Muskoka Bay Animal Clinic Team

🥦 Tip Tuesday: Keep your pets healthy by feeding them a balanced diet. Avoid giving them human snacks that are high in fat or sugar. 🍗

Like us, pets need a balanced diet to thrive. A well-rounded meal plan should provide the right amounts of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. A deficiency or excess in any of these can lead to health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, or malnutrition. Each pet’s dietary needs are different based on their age, breed, weight, and activity level, so it's important to tailor their meals accordingly.

The Risks of Overfeeding
Many of us love spoiling our pets with treats, but it's easy to give them more calories than they need. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, which significantly increases the risk of arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes. To avoid this, monitor portion sizes and opt for low-calorie, nutrient-rich treats.

Tailored Diets for Specific Health Needs
Some pets require specialized diets. For example:

Puppies and kittens need high-calorie, nutrient-dense foods to support rapid growth.

Senior pets may benefit from lower-calorie, joint-supporting formulas.
Pets with allergies or sensitivities might need hypoallergenic or limited-ingredient diets.

Pets with medical conditions (like kidney disease or diabetes) often require prescription diets to manage their health.

If your pet falls into any of these categories, consult with our veterinary team. We can help you select the best food to support their specific health needs.

A f***l exam (sometimes referred to as “a f***l”) is a microscopic examination of your dog or cat’s f***s. They can help us identify certain parasites or infection that would be difficult to detect. Getting a f***l done annually for your pet can help detect parasites early and treat them before things get worse.

Why We Recommend NOT to Pull Porcupine Quills at Home

We have seen an uptick in porcupine encounters lately. If your pet gets quilled by a porcupine, it’s tempting to try to remove the quills yourself, but here’s why it’s risky and why sedation is often necessary:

PAINFUL & TRAUMATIZING: Quills are barbed and deeply embedded in your pet’s skin. Pulling them out without proper pain relief is extremely painful and can cause your pet significant distress, making future handling more challenging. This can break trust with your pet and can even cause an aggressive response from them.

RISK OF BREAKING QUILLS: If quills are broken while being removed, parts can remain lodged under the skin. These fragments may migrate deeper into the body, potentially causing serious infections or complications. This also makes it challenging for the doctor to find the broken quills when they are brought in.

HIDDEN QUILLS: Sometimes, quills can be hidden beneath fur or in areas you may not notice. Sedation allows us to perform a thorough check, ensuring all quills are safely removed.

COMPLICATIONS: Quills can puncture delicate areas like the eyes, mouth, and throat. Attempting to pull them out without professional care can lead to further damage or infection.

The safest way to help your pet is to bring them to the clinic where we can remove the quills safely under sedation. This ensures a stress-free, pain-free experience for your pet, and peace of mind for you. If your pet has been quilled after hours, please do not wait to be seen, call HVEC at 705-722-0377

Training Tip Tuesday: Consistency is key! Regular, short training sessions can help reinforce positive behavior and strengthen your bond with your pet. 🐕🎓
Carry some small treats on you, or even some of their regular kibble.
High value treats go a long way for interrupting unwanted behavior when socializing.

Spotlight Sunday: Meet Fern, one of our adorable patients! Fern's story is pretty special, as she has been given a poor prognosis, and her pet parent, Sandi Prentice has gone above and beyond for Fern's quality of life by incorporating acupuncture as well as supplements, vitamin B12 and home-cooked meals into her regular care. This has been such a helpful combination that Fern has been living her best life in what they are calling "The Summer of Fern!"

We have been so lucky to be a part of Fern's Journey and the level of love and care her human has given to drive her an hour and a half (one way) each month for acupuncture, on top of everything else, the level of love and care is so beautiful to witness. Sandi has shared with us some sage advice from the acupuncturist who has said they, as pet owners, they need to also keep THEIR quality of life in check. This is absolutely true. Being a caregiver for a chronic or terminal condition is one of the most challenging things we can do in life and can easily burn us out if we aren't regularly checking in with ourselves.

Sandi has said "I am at peace knowing that I’m giving my girl quality over quantity. I’m just going to continue to love her and give her the best life until she lets me know it’s her time to go."

We want to acknowledge how difficult and personal these decisions are. End of life care looks different for every pet. Our hearts go out to you during this difficult time

Some cats rarely venture outside. Yours may be one of them. But that doesn’t mean your cat is protected against disease. There are any number of situations in which even ‘indoor cats’ can be exposed to disease. A trip to the groomer or a boarding facility. A weekend visit from houseguests. You can even unknowingly track germs inside on your clothing or on the soles of your shoes.

Vaccination helps protect your cat from disease-causing germs. There are some vaccines that are recommended for all cats and others that may also be needed depending on where you live and your cat’s lifestyle.

Help keep your cat safe at home with vaccination. Ask us which vaccines are right for your cat, and take advantage of our last week of summer promotion where the cost of core vaccines is included in the cost of the exam! (Ending September 1st)

Our beginnings...

DR. BARBARA ANN CHIDIAC

When Barbara Ann was a young girl, her parents had to physically drag her away from any animal in her line of sight! After receiving her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1985, Dr. Chidiac has obtained further training in PennHIP, Veterinary Homeopathy, studied and practices Canine Reproduction, and continues to pursue Continuing Veterinary Education to the tune of over 100 hours per year.

“Integrative care is one of the services that make us unique; we integrate modern western medicine with other modalities,” she said. “It’s not just about relying on drugs and vaccinations, rather there are many other ways to look after our pets’ health.” The hospital will offer small animal surgery and medicine services, vaccine titer testing, nutraceutical supplements, homeopathy and acupuncture, plus chiropractic care and behaviour consultations. “We bring a really wide range of health and medical options for your pets and we have a very strong interest in optimizing your pet’s health and well-being,” Dr. Chidiac said. The hospital also offers canine reproduction services with access to one of the only canine frozen semen banks in the province at the Waverley location

Our caring team truly embody our clinic philosophy of “Gentle Veterinary Medicine” with fear free practices and we will work with you and your furry family member to provide the best care possible.
