1yr old boys cage. All these boys are now a year or about to turn 1 yr old. #shadow is such an attention hog. If I'm petting another rat and he's on the other side of the top play area, he RUNS all the way down to get the pets. He's always climbing over his cage brother Cinder. Poor Cinder just lays there and takes it. Lol (both from @georgian_bay_rattery ) Even #kiwi and #tigger are no match for Shadow's obsession with affection. I have to pick them up and walk away from the cage so they can get pet. If I'm too close, Shadow will grab my shirt to pull me closer. 🤣 (MIA #onyx is somewhere in the top play area)

These babies are the cutest! I know. I always say that. Lol I love this age. They are exploring everything like their @therattybox items and zip around so quickly that half the time you don't know where they went. They are getting more and more used to being handled. They bounce around like little rabbits when excited. Only a few more weeks until they are ready for their forever homes. Can't believe they are going to be 5 weeks this Tuesday. We separated boys and girls this weekend. Mom was done with mom-ing. Lol She kept running away to a hammock to try to sleep alone and babies always found her and were still trying to nurse. Last night was her first night with a long break of just adults and she was in heaven. Lol

Another super cute @therattybox for Halloween! This time with the babies! Don't worry. This pen is their cage cleaning pen because they are so tiny and I don't want to accidentally miss anyone. Lol thought I'd take advantage of them being out and let them explore their first ratty box. I think it was a hit!
Pretty sure all are reserved if I counted right but feel free to put your name on a waitlist in case anyone changes their mind. Or you could adopt some of the white boys or girls.

Time for a #beans update. 4 weeks old now. She is literally the cutest! The end! 😂. I say this about every baby that comes into my care but seriously! I think she's a micro-lamb. 😂 That plush, cloud-like, ultra-soft curly fur. ❤️ She's so light that you don't even feel her on your shoulder. She loves to play and comes to the door the minute you call her name. Can't get enough of her.

This is Beans. Her mama had 3 babies but only Beans survived. Mama came to me pregnant at 1.5yrs old!! 😱😱😱 First time, accidental pregnancy. This is highly dangerous at her age. She's lucky she made it. Beans was the first to be born. Her sibling was being disposed of by mama when it came out deceased, probably due to being stuck in the birth canal (this is one of the most common/riskiest complications of older pregnancy) I won't go into details but this is nature's way. Another baby was found several hours later, passed, but taken out of the cage. Mama looked very puffy from prolonged labour. After examination, it was clear that there were no other babies left inside of her thankfully. I started her on pain meds and antibiotics right away as this is high risk for infection/death. It was a rough first week but she's been an amazing mama to Beans. Beans is now 18 days old today and is now in full play mode as you can see. My daughter is fully in love with the little peanut and she will be staying with us.

Daffy (formerly Star) has built such a strong bond with my daughter. She is one of 4 that came to me in May (Honey and Star-previouly Tink who passed) She had a tumor in her right groin that was deemed inoperable because of the location and attachment to other structures. We've been maintaining her with bromocriptine as a last ditch effort to slow the progression of it in hopes to allow her to live better quality/longer. It's been working but sometimes she refuses. I don't know what my daughter will do when she passes. Those 2 are joined at the hip. She sleeps, eats and spends all their days together. I can't get enough seeing these 2 together. Just look how Daffy cuddles her arm while they sleep. ❤️

Effective today and for the next 2 months I'll be closed for intakes. Going to have surgery today and will need some time to recover. Will still be open for adoptions but not until Aug 19th.
Poor Honey succumbed to her tumor last night. She was suffering and no longer eating/drinking without syringe feeding and being held. She got an extra week of good days with us but she wasn't responding to medication anymore. We made the choice that help her humanely cross over the rainbow bridge. 💔🌈 My daughter got to hold her until she passed quietly.
Let's talk #pituitarytumor in #rats This is an incurable brain tumor that can occur, usually 1.5yrs or later. They can sometimes be managed for a short period of time and give them a bit more quality. Pictured is Honey who was surrendered this May. A few weeks ago, we noticed she was a bit clumsy on occasion. She was still energetic and eating normally. Gradually, she started walking "wobbly". Of course, when my daughter would try to show me, she never did anything abnormal. Last week she started having front paw weakness, again off and on and never in my presence and stopped if my daughter tried to video her. She was still eating solids but was falling asleep during meals. Started having URI signs so we started her on antibiotics hoping it was that simple. She perked up for a couple days. Two evenings ago, she really started to wobble and was having a hard time holding her food and wide front paw stance. I knew. I could definitely see it this time. Her weight had dropped significantly as well, probably because she wasn't able to eat properly.That night we started her on steroids to rule in what I suspected and see if she would respond to treatment. By decreasing the swelling in her brain, her symptoms should improve. She also started having the telltale fist paws. (Seen in picture) She was so lethargic, even syringe feeding was very difficult. Yesterday morning, it would appear she had a seizure 🥺 When picked up for morning meds she was limp and unresponsive for 30 min (post-ictal). Eventually we got a high dose of steroids into her and some puppy milk to protect her stomach. By lunch time she started to perk up a tiny bit. For her evening dose, she actually ate on her own! It was soft baby food for now but since then, she hasn't stopped eating! Since her response was so good, we started bromocriptine with the steroids last night to see if it will help slow down the progression. It doesn't work in all rats but hopefully for her it will. We don't know how
