FUN FACT FRIDAY!

Did you know that skunks can spray their noxious scent across a distance of several feet (up to 15ft)!! 🦨🦨

If your furry friend encounters a skunk, it's essential to act swiftly to minimize the impact of the spray. Here are some tips to help:

1. Stay Calm: React calmly to avoid startling the skunk further.
2. Keep Your Dog Away: If your dog gets sprayed, keep them away from furniture and bedding to prevent the scent from spreading.
3. Treatment: Use a commercial odour neutralizer shampoo to wash your pet and help neutralize the odour. Be sure to rinse your pet thoroughly afterward.
4. Seek Professional Help: In severe cases, consider contacting your Veterinarian for assistance.

Stay informed and keep your pets safe! 🐶

As we head into BBQ season, it's essential to remember the potential dangers to our furry friends. Corn cobs and skewers might seem harmless, but they pose serious risks to our beloved pups.

🌽 Corn cobs: While delicious for us, corn cobs can cause intestinal blockages in dogs if ingested. These blockages are painful and may require surgery to remove.

🍢 Skewers: Those handy tools for kabobs can turn into dangerous objects if left unattended. Dogs are curious creatures and might sn**ch up skewers, leading to mouth injuries or worse if swallowed.

Let's keep our furry family members safe this summer by keeping these items out of reach and disposing of them properly. 🐶💙

Check out this video featuring a Dermacentor tick removed just yesterday! Dermacentor, the second prevalent tick species in Canada, doesn’t transmit Lyme disease. However, it’s important to note that non-Ixodes ticks like Dermacentor can still harbour other harmful pathogens, underscoring the importance of tick protection.

If you haven’t started your pet on tick prevention yet, we recommend starting it as soon as possible. Give us a call (705-522-4555) or send us an email ([email protected]) to order your pet’s prevention!

❓How can my Veterinarian tell if my pet has arthritis if I’m unable proceed with X-rays❓

Arthritis can be detected through a physical examination, alongside your observations of your pet’s behaviour at home.

Signs of osteoarthritis in your pet’s joints may manifest as a reduced range of motion, thickening accompanied by creaking sounds, pain response on palpation, and instability. Your Veterinarian will also evaluate their gait to assess for signs of stiffness, limping or movement challenges.

If you have concerns about your pet’s mobility, please contact us to schedule an appointment. Early detection is key in slowing the progression of osteoarthritis!

Know before you go! 🐾

New rules will be in place on August 1st, 2024 for traveling with your dog to the United States. Make sure you’re up to date with the latest regulations to ensure a smooth journey for you and your beloved pet. Additional requirements may apply depending on where your dog has been in the last 6 months, and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the U.S.

Use the CDC’s Q&A tool (DogBot) to determine what rules apply to your dog.

Travelling with your four-legged companion should be a joyous experience. Stay informed, follow the rules, and have a paw-some journey! 🐶✈️

FUN FACT FRIDAY!

Did you know that short, frequent walks are better than one long walk for arthritic dogs?

We want to keep arthritic pets moving but with controlled and low impact exercise. The type of terrain and the weather should also be considered when taking them for a walk as these can affect already sore joints.

❓HOW CAN I HELP MY ARTHRITIC PET❓

Pain associated with arthritis is typically managed by a multimodal approach. The following is a list of different options that can be used alone or in conjunction to help keep your pet comfortable.

-Non steroidal anti inflammatory
-Omega-3’s (particularly from your pet’s food)
-Cartilage protectants (Cartrophen)
-Joint supplements (which may include eggshell membrane, collagen, hyaluronic acid, Boswelia, Devil’s claw, etc)
-Anti nerve growth factor injections
-Intraarticular (joint) injections
-Other pain medications in later stages (Gabapentin, Codeine, Amantidine)
-Physiotherapy
-Glucosamine (as a protectant before arthritis is present)

If you feel your pet is having any symptoms of pain due to arthritis, please give us a call and schedule an appointment to discuss the best option for your pet.
