Today we would like to discuss adoption fees. When deciding to adopt from a rescue, you might notice that rescue animals are not simply “given away”. In fact, rescue fees for adopting an animal might even seem a “high” price to pay. But let’s put that into perspective!

When a rabbit enters SBRR care, they are provided all the necessary vet care to become a healthy rabbit. After any medications, X-rays, procedures, and follow up appointments, when the rabbit is deemed stable, they are then spayed or neutered. None of this is free despite SBRR being a non-profit. Some rabbits, cost the rescue well over $1k, while others born in rescue simply need to be fixed and have their first annual vet exam (assuming nothing goes wrong along the way). SBRR is a volunteer-operated non profit meaning we have no employees or anyone making money from our endeavours. That said, our adoption fee of $150 covers the spay/neuter appointment of one rabbit only - the rabbit being adopted. All other expenses that SBRR rescue rabbits incur, are paid for thanks to donations.

Now, let’s compare this to buying a rabbit. Buying an animal includes any animal purchased from a breeder (“rabbitry”/breeding mill) or pet store (sourced from a “rabbitry”/breeding mill). Sellers often do not vet check the rabbits before sending them home, nor do they get them fixed. Those are expenses that the buyer will have to cover in addition to the sale price and cost significantly more than $150.

When you adopt from a rescue, not only are you saving money, you are saving a life and supporting an organization that will save many more.

Featuring Biscuit 🍪

“Biscuit has been fostered in our home for about 3 weeks now and he is the sweetest, silliest little dude. He LOVES to explore and will chase you for treats! ❤️ His favourite treats so far have been strawberries and kale. He enjoys cuddles with my kids and has recently shown a huge interest in our dog! He likes to cuddle up in the dog bed and wait for sniffs and nose boops lol. 🥰 He doesn’t seem too bothered by the wood floors but definitely prefers a soft space to explore on. 🐇🤎”

Daphne Update 💖

You might recall that Daphne came to SBRR with some concerning fur loss and fur quality degradation. Sadly, despite months of mite treatment and an elimination diet, there are areas of her fur, particularly around her mouth, that have gotten worse! Daphne’s mouth has fur loss and some discolouration which led us to test her skin cells to rule out fungi. Unfortunately, the test didn’t give us any results either. So, this Friday, Daphne is going back to LAC for a biopsy and we are hopeful that we will have some answers finally!

Until we have answers and treatment for Daphne, her adoption is on hold and she will remain in SBRR foster care. At SBRR we take pride and comfort knowing our rescue rabbits are healthy when they go home! We have plenty of other rescue rabbits waiting for their forever family to meet them and bring them home 🏡 Visit our website (link in bio) to read more about available SBRR rabbits.

Want to donate towards Daphne’s medical bills? E-transfers can be sent to [email protected]. Donations are never expected, but always appreciated 💞

“A bit more about Webster...

He is working on being more of a social butterfly(well..bunny 😂) with his foster family. He enjoys head scratches and gentle ear rubs.

He does NOT like loud noises or fast movements..I figure he likes to be the fastest in the house 😂

P.S. He says “hi” to all of his fans 👋”

At SBRR, we believe that every rescue rabbit deserves a safe, loving home—and that begins with our Foster-to-Adopt program. This unique approach allows potential adopters to welcome a rabbit into their home for a mandatory 2-week foster period before making the adoption official. Here’s why this program is so important:

🐇 Why Foster-to-Adopt?
The foster period allows both you and the rabbit to adjust and find a routine that works. It provides an opportunity to learn about each other’s needs, habits, and personalities before making a lifelong commitment. Our goal is for every match to be the right match!

🛡️ Ensuring Well-being & Safety
During the foster period, we conduct regular wellness checks to ensure the rabbit is settling in well and receiving proper care. Our dedicated volunteer team is here to guide you every step of the way to guarantee that both the rabbit and your family’s needs are met.

📋 Foster Requirements
To give our rabbits the best care possible, we ask our fosters to meet a few essential requirements, including a safe and secure environment and an understanding of proper rabbit care. If at any point the foster requirements are not being met or there’s a concern for the rabbit’s well-being, we will step in to reassess and may remove the rabbit to ensure their safety and comfort.

❤️ The Right Fit Matters
We’re committed to making sure the rabbit you’re fostering is the right fit for your family and lifestyle. Our team works closely with you to support the transition and ensure that everyone’s needs—both human and furry—are met.
