Today we would like to discuss adoption fees. When deciding to adopt from a rescue, you might notice that rescue animals are not simply “given away”. In fact, rescue fees for adopting an animal might even seem a “high” price to pay. But let’s put that into perspective!
When a rabbit enters SBRR care, they are provided all the necessary vet care to become a healthy rabbit. After any medications, X-rays, procedures, and follow up appointments, when the rabbit is deemed stable, they are then spayed or neutered. None of this is free despite SBRR being a non-profit. Some rabbits, cost the rescue well over $1k, while others born in rescue simply need to be fixed and have their first annual vet exam (assuming nothing goes wrong along the way). SBRR is a volunteer-operated non profit meaning we have no employees or anyone making money from our endeavours. That said, our adoption fee of $150 covers the spay/neuter appointment of one rabbit only - the rabbit being adopted. All other expenses that SBRR rescue rabbits incur, are paid for thanks to donations.
Now, let’s compare this to buying a rabbit. Buying an animal includes any animal purchased from a breeder (“rabbitry”/breeding mill) or pet store (sourced from a “rabbitry”/breeding mill). Sellers often do not vet check the rabbits before sending them home, nor do they get them fixed. Those are expenses that the buyer will have to cover in addition to the sale price and cost significantly more than $150.
When you adopt from a rescue, not only are you saving money, you are saving a life and supporting an organization that will save many more.
