Today was our last monthly charity nail event for 2024. We got to see many of our long time regulars as well as first timers ahead of the holiday festivities. While we might not have captured all (or most) of the adorable faces we got to see, each one truly made our hearts swell 3 sizes just with their presence.
A huge thank to @petvalu_paisley for being such an amazing partner and helping us put these one each month, and serving both the pets we see as well as those through the rescues they donate to.

Shedding doesn’t break for snow.
Fun fact, maintaining a regular grooming schedule for your double & triple coated dogs year round - especially during the cooler months - will actually help them stay warmer. Proper bathing and drying removes dead undercoat so the correct level of air circulation between the dogs skin and coat can trap in the heat without creating “hot zones” where skin issues/irritations can happen. Plus who doesn’t love a fluffy butt for fluffmas?

It’s a crazy time for all those who work in the animal industry, especially groomers.

When I tell you I cried grooming this dog.
There’s something about the moment an anxious dog eases as the matts come off. When they rest their head in our hands and there’s an unspoken momentary connection as our eyes meet.
I’m continually grateful for the local pet business connections we as a salon have to make sure we’re able to make sure sweet souls like this get the help they need.
If you do what you love for you, you’ll never go wrong. Don’t listen to the outside voices, they don’t know your power.

Something happening to our hands is one of a groomer’s worst nightmares. This happened a week ago and while thankfully it wasn’t more severe or on my dominant hand, it still caused a lot of pain and a lack of strength for me handling client dogs the rest of the work week. I knew it was going to be uncomfortable with 80% of my hand being in the dog’s mouth.
Do I blame the dog or their owner? No. The dog had experienced traumatic nail trimming in the past which we were hoping to work through together, but no one could have predicted this after just touching (not with any tools) a foot. Not to mention it was a fundraising event so I was a complete stranger to the dog. The best thing at that time was for me to back off and give the owners desensitization exercises to set their pup up for success in the future … even if it didn’t help me.
But groomers go through this everyday, all year long. Our best furry clients start off as complete strangers with no basis for trust, and depending on the day or time, any pet has the possibility of a slip up occuring. Yet we still do it because we love the animals and we love what we do.
Yes we have training. Yes we get background information. Yes we understand body language & nonverbal cues. Yes we have equipment to keep ourselves and the pets safe. Yes we do everything we can to prevent this from happening. But it’s STILL A POSSIBILITY.
So please keep this in mind next time when talking to your groomer/vet/trainer/pet professional. We go to work everyday with the chance it might be the last.
