Freya is 5 years old and has suddenly become afraid of thunder and fireworks. It is quite typical for dogs to become sensitive to noises like this as they get older - sometimes there is a sudden event that triggers it, other times it happens more gradually.

So what can we do to help dogs like Freya?

- A vet check. Did you know noise sensitivities and pain are often correlated? Freya's wonderful sports vet (.road.vet) found she had a sore back.

- Providing a safe space while she is nervous. Comforting your dog while they are scared will not reinforce the fear. It will just make your dog feel better. In Freya's case, she likes to sit on the couch snuggled up next to her humans. Other dogs may prefer that you give them space or may seek out small enclosed areas like bathtubs. Leaving the radio or TV on to help muffle the scary noises can also be helpful. Dogs may also benefit from having something to chew on.

- Supportive care. Freya just got a new Thundershirt (love that they come in pink now!), and also has anxiety medication that she can take before a storm or holiday. If your dog struggles with noises, speak to your vet about anxiety medication in advance - don't wait until the day before a holiday!

- Counter condition noises. This training is done when the dog is calm and relaxed, not in the middle of a storm. We want to help the dog develop positive associations with loud noises. If you aren't sure where to begin with counter conditioning, it's best to seek out a trainer or behaviorist to help.

Does your dog hate putting on their harness? Mine too. While harnesses are the safest walking tool for your dog, many dogs hate having them slide over their head. Adventure Collars was kind enough to make Esme a beautiful custom harness with a buckle at the neck - no more squished ears!

Small changes can make a big difference to your dog.

One of the most important things we teach in our Kinderpuppy classes is body handling. Obedience cues are great, but having a dog that is comfortable being handled for husbandry procedures makes your life, and more importantly you dog's life, SO much less stressful when accidents happen. Your vet and groomer will thank you too.

I noticed Freya had dried blood on her chest when I got home. Because she has lots of handling practice, I was able to shave, inspect and clean the cut, all while she laid calmly on her side unrestrained in any way. Lucky it looks like just a scratch, probably from a branch.

Handling practice starts with puppies, but it's not too late for older dogs to learn either.

Extra cookies for Freya for being a wonderful girl.

Training your dog to leave things when dropped - even without a verbal or physical cue - can be important for their safety. While a piece of cheese may not be harmful, a dropped pill could be deadly.

How do we get to this stage? Well, lots of reinforcement of the behaviour we want the dog to do, and by gradually making the "question" more difficult. Dogs should learn this skill individually before trying it with multiple dogs.

Old dogs CAN learn new tricks. Meet Hunter, an almost 11 year old malamute who graduated from our Manners for the Modern Dog class last night. Hunter's owner came to class to help Hunter be less nervous around other dogs - by week 6, Hunter was confidently recalling past bouncing teenage dogs without a care. Great work Hunter! 💜

A fun little game we like to call "Hallway of Doom!" - water bottles, paper bags, toys, paper towel, and more! Great for perfecting loose leash walking past distractions you might find while out on a walk.

Reminder to let your dog do dog stuff.

Let them sniff. Let them get soggy and dirty. Let them explore. Let them hunt critters in wood piles. Let them roll in the snow.

Our dogs live very structured lives. We control pretty much everything they do - when they eat, when they play, when they sleep. So make sure you give your dog time to be a dog.

Your dog will be happier - and better behaved - when you do.
