Welcome to the world of Scent Detection! 👃👃👃
Did you know that a dog’s ability to smell is their strongest sense? Unlike our measly 400, dogs have over one million scent receptors in their nose for interpreting the words around them! Dogs can determine the finest details with their nose, and because they use their brains to process all of these wonderful scents, this is also one of the most enriching activities for them to engage in. Scent work is a wonderful way to safely and effectively allow our dogs to engage in one of their most powerful drives, all while being apart of the process. Not only that, but the sport is all inclusive, meaning almost anyone and their dog can learn to do it! Scent training is also a great way to fulfill your dog’s physical and mental needs.
New to the sport or just want a different activity to try? This class is for you!
Class Length: 4 Weeks
NEXT CLASS: Monday Sept 9th at 7:15pm with UKC Scent Coach, Kayla Grant
Cost: $180+ HST

New puppy or rescue dog?
Play the capturing game! 📸📸📸
This is a great way to introduce some freedom in the house while still ensuring that your dog is not getting into mischief. To play, put a few of your puppy's kibbles hidden in your pocket (don't let them see you put them there!) and take your puppy/new dog out of their crate. Make sure they are occupying an area that is safe and free from temptations like shoes, plants, Kleenex, etc, and have a few of their toys and their doggie bed available. Go about your day while keeping a close eye on your puppy, and any time they offer a behaviour you like (grabbing their toy to self entertain, chewing on an appropriate chew, going to their dog bed, sitting or laying down) give them some verbal praise, or calmly reward with a kibble. If your dog is too food motivated or demanding when out comes to treats, stick with just verbal praise/calm attention. Repeat this 10-15 times, and then put them back in their crate or take them outside for a p*e break. If your puppy does something undesirable, remove them from the situation and give them an opportunity to try again. It is important that our pups learn how to navigate their new found freedom in a way that is desirable for us!
Happy Training 🐶
How cute is little Griffin on his training walks?? We absolutely LOVE this guy 🐶🩷
Ashia, Stark, and Sybil say “Happy Tongue Out Tuesday!” 🐶
CONGRATULATIONS to Macenzi and her Yellow Lab, Zoe, for graduating to your BLUE Level this past weekend! It is so wonderful to see Zoe coming out of her shell and enjoying the training and bonding time with Mom. Zoe is absolutely rocking her skills, and loves to learn! See you in the Intermediate Levels 💙
Is your dog getting STRUCTURED exercise, or CHAOTIC exercise?
There is a big difference! Though both may seem like your dog is burning some energy, one will satisfy their needs and create calmness and clarity, while the other will encourage overstimulation and inability to regulate.
Some examples of structured exercise:
-designated playtime with you
-a controlled activity that suits your dog's breed (scent work, agility, retrieving, swimming, guarding livestock, etc)
-sniffaries or exploration walks
-a training session
-controlled off leash time with a playmate they get along well with
Some examples of chaotic exercise:
-busy dog parks
-running around with the kids
-chasing wildlife
-chasing the cat
-running around in the house (unless this is a controlled, desired activity)
Is your dog getting the right kind of exercise?
The Canada Day AAC Agility Trial at Jumping for Joy Dogsports was so much fun, a big congratulations to Trainer Erin and Remi for getting their Advanced Standard title on Sunday! Remi had some absolutely beautiful runs, and earned a qualifying score in 2 Starter Standards, Advanced Snooker, and Advanced Jumpers. Very well done.
This was only DeeDee’s second AAC trial so she is still pretty new to the sport, but I was so happy with her dedication and ability to show off what she has learned in a busy setting! We earned a qualifying score in our Snooker run on Saturday, and a qualifying score in our Gamble run on Sunday. We still have lots of practice to do, but am so proud of everything this little dog has accomplished in a short time 🏅🏅🏅

Griffin and I practicing the “front” cue, which is essentially a quick sit in front of me, even when at a distance! This becomes a very reliable recall cue, and sets him up to focus on me, rather than distractions. #dogtraining #recalltraining #puppytraining #obedience #dogsofinstagram #goldendoodle

Our awesome Outdoor Levels Class working on their “leapfrog” game today! These classes are so laid back and such a great opportunity to practice in controlled, real world distractions.
It is a HOT one today, so Griffin and I decided to stick to the shade and practice some stationary cues! Griffin has been working hard on his 5 second stand stay, which he absolutely nailed. I absolutely love spending time with this guy! #goldendoodle #looseleashwalking #daytraining #dogtraining #puppytraining #dogsofinstagram #dogsofguelph

We often get asked “what is the purpose of a ‘target’ in training?” And honestly, the options are endless! #dogtraining #obedience #puppytraining #gooddog #dogsofinstagram #dogmom #dogdad #forcefree #positivereinforcementtraining #basictraining #looseleashwalking #downstay #sitstay #recalltraining
Those “pivots” we learned in Senior Puppy Class are really paying off! Great work everyone 🐶 #puppyclass #leashtraining #puppyschool #dogtraining #dogmom #dogdad #gooddog
Great work on your loose leash walking, Gus! 🤩 #puppyclass #juniorpuppy #dogtraining #puppysocialization #looseleashwalking
With this week's temperatures soaring upwards, treat your pup to a cool snack 🧡 We filled our Messy Mutts treat mold with pure pumpkin and a little bit of coconut oil to make a yummy snack for the pups. You can fill any mold with dog safe items, like pureed veggies and fruits and freeze them to keep a few on hand for a warm afternoon. We have Messy Mutts items available at the @jvtraining1 storefront! Stay cool, friends! #summertreat #StayCool #MessyMutts #dogsaofinstagram
It’s another hot one out there today, which means a great opportunity to teach my dog a new trick! Trick training is a fantastic way to build confidence and engagement from your dog and get them thinking. DeeDee knows how to fetch me a Kleenex, but hasn’t learned how to throw it in the trash for me yet! 🗑️ When in the acquisition (learning) stage of a behaviour, it is important to pick a location with zero distractions that your dog is very comfortable in, and then build up from there. What trick do you want to teach your dog? #dogtraining #tricktraining #bordercollie #rescuedog #dogsofinstagram #domorewithyourdog
UNPOPULAR TRAINING OPINION: Dogs don't need to always be walking right beside you! In fact, long line training is one of the most beneficial ways to walk your dog. Not only does in stimulate their brain AND body, but it gives them a beautiful balance of freedom and safety which can help any dog self regulate in an otherwise stimulating environment. Using a long line properly will create more opportunity for your dog to make good choices while exploring, like checking in with you, recalling, or turning away from a trigger. It is amazing what less tension and more space on the leash can do. For more information on the safety and mechanics of long line training, reach out to us 🐶 **This type of training is derived from Grisha Stewart's BAT (Behaviour Adjustment Training). There are tons of excellent resources out there if you want to learn more! #dogtraining #longlinetraining #looseleashwalking #DogAdventure #dogobedience #dogsofguelph #dogsofinstagram #forcefree #positivereinforcementtraining #behaviouradjustmenttraining
Gate or doorway manners are so important for your dog’s impulse control, calmness, and engagement! We never want to deny our dogs the ability to access exciting areas, but we do want to make sure they associate these things with you. Good doorway manners can also be a life saving skill! #dogtraining #puppytraining #dogsofinstagram #trainingclass #leashtraining #dogmom #dogdad
The Look At That Game! 👀 This simple technique is such an important part of socializing your dog. It is one of the best way to build positive associations to what your dog is seeing around them by using counter conditioning. To begin, simply choose a quiet spot with mild level distractions and allow your dog to notice the sights and sounds happening around them. Once they look at something, mark it and feed. Do this for a few repetitions until they notice the trigger and then choose to automatically look back at you! This helps build confidence with all kinds of distractions, and teaches your dog to report these distractions back to you (thinking brain), rather than react (fight or flight). In the video is 12 week old Winnie learning that the world, in this case the traffic noise specifically, is a safe, calm, and positive place. Have fun! #dogtraining #puppytraining #dogsofinstagram #puppiesofinstagram #positivereinforcement
