Wild Leek Farm

Wild Leek Farm Wild Leek Farm sits just outside the city of Guelph. We grow to meet or do better than the Canadian Organic Standards. I hope you’ll come see for yourself.

We currently produce all manner of vegetables from our 1 acre market garden, and hope to include fruit, hops, mushrooms, and maybe even maple syrup, in coming seasons. We are a female run small business, owned and operated by me, Danie McAren, mom of three and lover of great food. I moved my family to Ontario from BC in 2013 so I could work towards a science degree in Organic Agriculture at the Un

iversity of Guelph. I very much enjoyed the opportunities this awarded me. Most notably, attending tropical agriculture field school in Costa Rica, and agro-ecological field school in Cuba. I am extremely passionate about what small ecologically minded farming can bring to the table.

Hey Y'all. A lot of folks have been reaching out to find out when the stand/online store will be up and running this season. Long story short - and a better adieu is forthcoming - this year didn't come together as planned and that means no produce I'm afraid.

Hey there curious followers and beloved long time customers. I wanted to take a moment to announce that this will be the final season for Wild Leek Farm.

It has been quite a ride. From incredible highs (offering csa shares full of beautiful vibrant and earth friendly local produce to 46 individuals/families - all from this little 3/4 acre plot) to the dreary lows (eg discovering meadow voles chopped down 90% of your seedlings in one night) this adventure has been an honour.

I have been passionately focused on this venture for over a decade, and while I will always grow food for the love of it, I will be heading in a new direction after this season's close.

I do hope many of you will come out this summer, if for no other reason than to say hello and catch up. I will run an on farm market during the week and on the weekend (likely Wednesday afternoon/eve, and Sunday late morning) from the end of June through the end of October.

Keep an eye out for more details as we approach that lovely abundant time of year.

Much love to all of you who have supported me in learning, building, and running this farm in any way you have: babysitting, words of encouragement, manning a rake, showing up to buy produce on a rainy morning, or simply telling friends about our markets etc. It has all been so very appreciated.

Thank you. 🩷🍅

Squash Sale. Lots of autumn frost (specialty butternut type), and Futsu pumpkin, left and in need of a home. Priced per item in our online store. Both types are excellent roasted or bbq’d, bake and scoop out the flesh to add to muffins, biscuits, bread and soups. Cut up into soups, curries, and roast cubes for veggie bowls. They make great pies too as they are somewhat sweeter and dryer than traditional pumpkin. Wholesale orders may be possible - please contact to discuss.

New Year planning. Busy taking stock of my current seed supply, to inform my order for this year. Plus, trying to wrap my head around Airtable, to build out a new farm plan. So far seems promising. Might be snowy and blustery outside, but indoors farm season 2024 is already underway.

We’re hosting a winter market!

Come on out to the farm on Sunday, December 10th between 1pm and 4pm.

We will have hyper local winter veggies from our farm (Puslinch/Guelph) and (Eden Mills), along with some beautiful hand made ornaments, cards, crochet hats, plant and root dyed merino beanie/neck warmers, small gift items, and more.

We will also be selling coffee, hot chocolate (vegan available), and small treats to enjoy while you shop in our greenhouse or while checking out our goats and ducks.

We kindly ask that you leave dogs/pets at home.

That’s a wrap on the farm stands for 2023. (Online store will continue throughout the fall/winter).

Once again, a huge thank you to everyone who came out to see us this season. I was so pleased to meet our new customers, and to see so many returning faces that have become like old friends. I appreciate you all so much for seeing the value in our little farm operation, and for returning time and time again. Much love to you all.

On this weekend of expressing gratitude, I have much to be grateful for and you can all consider yourselves part of that.

Wishing everyone a cozy and peaceful holiday weekend. 💐🍁🍂

Farm stand open this Sunday, October 8 from 9am until noon. We will have a variety of our own organically grown veggies plus some guest produce available. It is the last outdoor stand of the season for us, then we switch to online orders all fall/winter so long as we have storage crops like onions and squash to offer.

Sorry for any inconvenience, but there will be no online orders available for pick up Wed. October 4. I’m taking one night off to go jump in a lake and make the most of this October heat wave. I’ll be back by Thursday to harvest for our last outdoor stand, Sunday October 9. Hope to see you then.

New recipe alert! Pumpkin and spice muffins made with fresh pumpkin (or kabocha squash)

Because not everyone keeps a sourdough starter, I cut that ingredient from my Ultimate Pumpkin and Spice Muffins with Sourdough Discard recipe and adapted it to compensate for the missing starter. The results are delicious!

I also used freshly ground nutmeg, which doesn't take long at all to grind on a microplane. The fresh pumpkin (or squash) combined with freshly ground nutmeg take these pumpkin and spice muffins to the next level.

Slow progress is still progress. Snow peas are suddenly full of flowers, lettuces growing along despite the lack of rain, beets greening up and growing fast, onions are looking lovely and in need of a quick weeding, carrots are lush and in need of a good thin out (old seed so planted heavily), eggplants are in the field, bean babies are thriving, tomatoes are in the greenhouse. A whole bunch more lettuces and chard babies to get in the ground, plus cukes, zukes, squash, peppers, celery, celeriac and basil all need to get transplanted. Busy time. Boy, do we need rain for the veggies, and the fires!!!

Another good one from the friends at Rot, "dynamic accumulator" isnt a thing that exists and there's no scientific framework for the suggestion. Stop planting comfrey, please.
