Water remains as important for your horse in cold weather as it is in the summer. As a matter of fact, decreased water consumption in the winter is thought to be the primary inducing factor for impaction colic — although there are other predisposing factors such as poor hay quality, lack of exercise, internal parasites and dental problems.

Impaction colic is essentially constipation and most often includes the accumulation of hard, dry f***l material in the colon. The usual signs of impending impaction colic are depression, a decreased appetite, and decreased production and dryness of manure.

Studies demonstrate that you can increase your horse's winter water consumption if you provide access to heated water, but ONLY if that is the only source of water available. As always, if you have any questions about preventing colic in your horse, your equine veterinarian remains your best source of information!

Employer Infosession tomorrow! The Ontario Equine Education and Employment Program is seeking employers for our 2024 students! The 2024 cohorts are seeking to complete their placements to graduate from our program.

We're seeking any equine related employers, including barns, tack shops, feed companies, farriers, massage therapists/equine chiros, and more!

Since we had such an incredible flood of employer inquiries for the OEEEP, we decided to host an information session.
The session will take ~30 minutes to an hour. The presentation is about 10 minutes, so that will leave 20+ minutes for questions.
We are still looking for employers for our program and it would be greatly appreciated if you could join us!

With the most qualified instructors and expert guest speakers, Equine Guelph is the leader in Online Studies for equine pursuits; boasting 20 accredited 12-week courses to choose from, delivered through a partnership between Equine Guelph and the University of Guelph’s Centre for Open Learning and Educational Support. The courses are offered three times a year: September, January and May. Students from over 40 countries have enrolled in the award-winning programs.
