Training with your new puppy can begin day one! I'm not necessarily talking about formal training sessions: heeling, recall, trick training, etc.. but things like setting up a routine and rewarding behaviors you want to see repeated, and just building a nice bond with your puppy should start at day one.

These 3 things will really help set ypu and your dog up for success. They will encourage your puppy to see value in paying attention to you, coming close to you, working for food. As well as setting up a really simple, but important way to communicate with your dog. Once your dog responds to a reward marker, like yes, there's nothing you can't teach them!

For all of these exercises, keep your expectations low. You're not trying to trick your dog or make it hard for them. You want them to be successful, so you want to make it as easy for them as possible.
Start sitting on the ground with them, without any distractions, as close to them as you need to be so that they can respond easily.

I like to start by trying to work with their kibble because for a lot of puppies, it is high enough value to make them work. However, feel free to use treats whenever you feel you need to. You'll just need teeny, tiny pieces of whatever you're using.

Marker training is the ultimate way to simplify communication with your dog. It is the backbone of reward based training as it helps them understand exactly what you're asking of them and lets them know exactly why they are being rewarded.

Once you both learn the techniques, you'll see your training really take off. Itsamazing how fast you can progress when your dog understands what you're asking of them!

Then the sky's the limit on what you and your dog can master.

Helping your dog learn a solid recall isn't only extremely important for safety and emergencies (although it is!) It also opens up a whole new world for fun with your dog. When your dog has a solid recall you can hike off leash, take them to a dog beach, and let them explore and sniff more places.

You are some easy games to try if you're struggling with recall. And if you need more help contact us to set up a training session!

Puppy socialization is one of the most important (and underestimated) parts of raising a dog.

As our puppies gaurdians, it's our job to set them up for a lifetime of success and security. Part of this job is introducing them to as many different sights, sounds, people, places, animals, textures, and objects as possible. And to do our best to ensure those experiences are positive!

And if you need help, sign your puppy up for our Puppy Socialization Field Trips and let us dp some of the work!

I know puppies are adorable, and you want to pet and cuddle with them.

Just please be aware that your actions have consequences when it comes to the training of a puppy.

If you allow a puppy to jump all over you, you're teaching it that behaviour is acceptable. And while this may not seem like a big deal... whatever you teach a puppy gets carried into adulthood.

And no one wants a 90 pound dog jumping on them!

Here are some ways you can help!

CRATE TRAINING can be a slow process, but it doesn't have to be difficult.

It's mportant to go slowly, allowing your dog to set the pace and let you know when to advance to the next level.

And never use the crate as punishment, it's a fun, happy, safe space for your dog.

Place training is a super versatile and useful behaviour to teach your pup.

It can be helpful in a variety of situations, such as when you need to answer the door, when you're trying to cook, or eat dinner, when you're watching tv.

And you can take it with you! Since 'place' can be anything (a bed, cot, blanket, towel, etc.) you can bring it with you when you go to a patio or someone's house and your dog will have a spot they know to relax in!Follow for more dog training tips.
