Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

Safe watching our friends!

Sometimes, dogs can mask symptoms of pain quite well, especially if we don’t know what to look out for. One of the more obvious signs that your dog may be experiencing pain is lameness, also known as limping. However, a dog may not always limp or whimper when they are in pain. These signs may not always necessarily be obvious, but if you pay close attention, you should be able to notice some subtle signs that your dog may be experiencing pain.

It’s a commonly held belief that “dogs don't sweat except on their feet", but that’s not true and in fact dogs sweat all over.

Ever wondered why a puppy's behavior seems erratic during adolescence, which occurs between six months and 18 months of age?

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, s*x hormones are changing which effects the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to modulate sensory processing and subsequent behavior.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control.

So what does this mean? This could mean that your dog, who used to come when called, suddenly cannot. This could mean that your dog, who didn't jump up on guests, suddenly does. Your dog that walked nicely on leash is now pulling. Or perhaps it seems like some days your dog responds to behaviors you ask of them, and some days they don't, without any rhyme or reason.

We also see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, frustration and impatience sometimes cause us to act unpredictably.

This adds to your puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for puppies to adjust.

By understanding this we can gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we can help create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best selves.

🐾 IS YOUR DOG MICROCHIPPED?? 🐾

This is an X-ray of a dog’s bent front leg. See that tiny white spot? That’s a microchip! It has migrated down the leg, far from where it was originally inserted between the dog’s shoulders.

When lost pets are scanned, the entire body should be scanned to catch any chips that have migrated.

As an owner, it is your responsibility at a yearly vet exam to ask for a quick scan to make sure...

Is the chip still working? ✅
Is the location of the chip still good? ✅

Even more importantly it is your responsibility to make sure the chip company can reach you if your dog is found! YOU must contact the chip company to make sure...

Is your chip registered properly? ✅
Is your contact info up-to-date? ✅

Microchips save lives and reunite families with their pets. If your dog is not yet chipped, please make a vet appointment today! 🐶

Decorating for the holidays? Don't forget about your pet's safety! Tinsel can be dangerous if ingested and small decorations can be choking hazards, while seasonal plants such as mistletoe can be toxic to pets. To keep your pet safe, place these items in areas your pet can't access or avoid using them.

Veterans Day is also a time to thank our four-legged war heroes. Sgt. Stubby, a rescued stray, was the most decorated war dog of World War I and the only dog to be promoted to sergeant through combat.
