Holidays are stressful - for us and for our dogs. Routines are off, environments change, and we may have to ask a lot of our dogs during this time of year. Make sure you give your dog outlets to relieve this stress during holiday events, as well as after!

Here are our favourite calming activity suggestions to help dogs with emotional regulation and decompression. Give them a try! Look for soft facial expressions, relaxed ears, a wiggly or loose tail, blinky, soft eyes, and deep breaths during these activities to determine whether your dog is decompressing.

If your dog will be attending a holiday gathering with you over the next couple of days, preparing a long-term calming project may help them settle in these exciting environments. We love rubber food toys as long-term calming projects, because they encourage licking and chewing behaviours, which help dogs emotionally regulate. They also give your dog something entertaining (and appropriate!) to focus on in these busy, indoor environments.

Here are some holiday-themed stuffing ideas for your dog's favourite rubber food toy. These recipes will fit into a medium sized kong, but can be used for other sized kongs, toppls, or lick mats. If your dog is an expert is clearing out their rubber food toy, packing the ingredients tightly and/or freezing can help their project last longer!

The holiday season is so fun for us as humans, but it certainly introduces a lot of chaos into the lives of our dogs, and disrupts their daily routines. Whether your dog is over-excited or overwhelmed by large gatherings, these tips can help make you support your dog during this busy season.

Create a quiet space for down time. If you're hosting, a back bedroom works nicely. If you're travelling, bringing your dog's crate may give them a familiar safe space to withdraw into if they feel overwhelmed and need some quiet time.

Meet their needs before the fun begins. Make sure that your dog is physically and mentally satisfied before you ask them for calm behaviour in a really exciting context.

Manage your dog's access to cooking and eating spaces - especially if they like to countersurf! Keeping your dog on a leash, using their crate, or blocking the kitchen off with baby gates are all ways we can keep them from ingesting something dangerous.

Reward your dog for behaviours you like. Wear your treat pouch, and let them know you like it when they offer relaxed behaviours, like settles and sits. This is easier than being reactive when they offer behaviours we don't like as much!

Help your guests understand when your dog needs a break. You may need to tell your guests to stop petting your dog, stop feeding your dog, or stop playing with your dog if you feel like your dog needs some space. Advocating for your dog can be hard! But if your dog is trying to ask for a break or some space, let your guests know and help your dog out.

We're wrapping up our last scent detection class of the 2024 this week! Scentwork is an amazing sport because it requires your dog to 1) understand what you're asking of them, and 2) perform a clear indication that they have correctly identified the container with odor. It also requires human observation skills. How does your dog's body language change when they come across the hot container? How can we help our dogs be more clear in this communication, in ways that make sense to them?

Stockwell's people have shaped a really nice nose target, which Stockwell does when he detects odor. In this video, he is detecting wintergreen essential oil, which is present in 1 of the 6 containers. Do you see the difference in his behaviour as he approaches the different containers in this search?

We have another round of scent detection opening in January! Go check out www.onelegupcanineco.com to sign up.

Something a lot of people don't realize is that using a positive reinforcement-based mindset to train dogs does not mean we are permissive. We will use food, toys, and other rewards to motivate desirable behaviours. While we don't intentionally use punishment to teach dogs new skills, we also don't let our dogs do whatever they want.

The goal of our training protocols is to teach the dog what we want them to do in certain contexts, rather than reacting to behaviours we don't want them to do. Often, our dogs are simply behaving in ways that make sense to them. For example, your dog may attempt to countersurf if you leave a plate of food out in the kitchen unsupervised. This is a natural behaviour for dogs, as scavengers and as opportunists! However, in our human world this can be considered rude, and can even be dangerous if our dogs get a hold of something that isn't safe for them to consume. Instead of being reactive to this behaviour - maybe by startling, or physically manipulating our dog - our goal as positive trainers is to be proactive and show our dog how we would like them to behave when food is plated on the counter.

We need to put some work into helping them navigate our human rules and expectations. Our dogs aren't born understanding that some behaviours are rude, dangerous, or undesirable. They are simply behaving in ways that are likely to provide them with access to something they want. We can teach our dogs that they can access the things they want in ways that are more aligned with our human expectations.
