The holiday season is so fun for us as humans, but it certainly introduces a lot of chaos into the lives of our dogs, and disrupts their daily routines. Whether your dog is over-excited or overwhelmed by large gatherings, these tips can help make you support your dog during this busy season.

Create a quiet space for down time. If you're hosting, a back bedroom works nicely. If you're travelling, bringing your dog's crate may give them a familiar safe space to withdraw into if they feel overwhelmed and need some quiet time.

Meet their needs before the fun begins. Make sure that your dog is physically and mentally satisfied before you ask them for calm behaviour in a really exciting context.

Manage your dog's access to cooking and eating spaces - especially if they like to countersurf! Keeping your dog on a leash, using their crate, or blocking the kitchen off with baby gates are all ways we can keep them from ingesting something dangerous.

Reward your dog for behaviours you like. Wear your treat pouch, and let them know you like it when they offer relaxed behaviours, like settles and sits. This is easier than being reactive when they offer behaviours we don't like as much!

Help your guests understand when your dog needs a break. You may need to tell your guests to stop petting your dog, stop feeding your dog, or stop playing with your dog if you feel like your dog needs some space. Advocating for your dog can be hard! But if your dog is trying to ask for a break or some space, let your guests know and help your dog out.

We're wrapping up our last scent detection class of the 2024 this week! Scentwork is an amazing sport because it requires your dog to 1) understand what you're asking of them, and 2) perform a clear indication that they have correctly identified the container with odor. It also requires human observation skills. How does your dog's body language change when they come across the hot container? How can we help our dogs be more clear in this communication, in ways that make sense to them?

Stockwell's people have shaped a really nice nose target, which Stockwell does when he detects odor. In this video, he is detecting wintergreen essential oil, which is present in 1 of the 6 containers. Do you see the difference in his behaviour as he approaches the different containers in this search?

We have another round of scent detection opening in January! Go check out www.onelegupcanineco.com to sign up.

Something a lot of people don't realize is that using a positive reinforcement-based mindset to train dogs does not mean we are permissive. We will use food, toys, and other rewards to motivate desirable behaviours. While we don't intentionally use punishment to teach dogs new skills, we also don't let our dogs do whatever they want.

The goal of our training protocols is to teach the dog what we want them to do in certain contexts, rather than reacting to behaviours we don't want them to do. Often, our dogs are simply behaving in ways that make sense to them. For example, your dog may attempt to countersurf if you leave a plate of food out in the kitchen unsupervised. This is a natural behaviour for dogs, as scavengers and as opportunists! However, in our human world this can be considered rude, and can even be dangerous if our dogs get a hold of something that isn't safe for them to consume. Instead of being reactive to this behaviour - maybe by startling, or physically manipulating our dog - our goal as positive trainers is to be proactive and show our dog how we would like them to behave when food is plated on the counter.

We need to put some work into helping them navigate our human rules and expectations. Our dogs aren't born understanding that some behaviours are rude, dangerous, or undesirable. They are simply behaving in ways that are likely to provide them with access to something they want. We can teach our dogs that they can access the things they want in ways that are more aligned with our human expectations.

Often, we're well-intentioned in trying to get our puppies out for daily walks (or multiple walks a day)! But doing frequent, structured exercise with our puppies may be counter-productive to promoting rest and relaxation. Give this post a read to learn about over-walking puppies, recognizing fatigue, and ideas for stimulation aside from leashed neighbourhood outings ๐Ÿงก

We love clicker training! Clickers are the clearest way we know how to let our dog know we like the behaviour they've performed. It's the same noise every single time, and it always means that food is on its way. Clarity is so important to solidify new skills, and the clicker helps us be really clear on exactly what the dog did to earn their reward.

Have you tried using the clicker in your training sessions?

When we're working through the training process, there are a lot of things we can control - but there are a lot of things out of our control, too. Working to change your dog's behaviour is always going to require patience, effort, and consistency. There are multiple factors, both inside and outside of our control, that will influence the speed at which your dog is able to reach your training goals.

It's easy to get overwhelmed during the training journey, and dwell on things we can no longer (or could never) control. It's so important to remember that there are many things you CAN control that will support your dog in their process. Each dog is unique and will require a different level of support to achieve a training goal. Remember to take baby steps in positive directions when it comes to all the areas of your dog's journey that you can control.

Congratulations to Luna & Diane for completing their final tricks to be approved for the Expert Trick Dog Title! To earn this title, this team was required to perform five expert level tricks recognized by the CKC and Do More With Your Dog. Diane and Luna are a phenomenal team who have learned so much from working together. This level of communication takes a lot of dedication and effort from the human and the dog. It's a joy to see our teams put in so much work to develop their relationship. Well done, Luna & Diane ๐Ÿ‘
