~The temperatures are frigid and the ground is icy. We know that when its this cold, we need to bundle up extra tight! But what about our pets?

~Its might be easy to think that because our pets have fur, they don't need any extra sources of warmth or protection during the winter, but this is just not the case!
Our dogs can benefit greatly from a cozy jacket for extra insulation (particularly short coated breeds and smaller dogs) and even boots or socks to protect them from the ice and salt!

~It is also important to give your pets paws a good wipe after their winter walks, as salt can cause irritation and even burns.
Purchasing pet friendly ice melter to use around your home that wont hurt their paws, like the ones we sell here at our clinic, can help alleviate extra worry during the chilly winter months!

Stay warm & safe, everyone! β„οΈπŸ’™

πŸŽ‰ The Park Avenue Vet Team wishes everyone a Happy Howl-iday! πŸŽ‰

Here are some holiday hazards to look out for so you and your furry friends can have a safe and enjoyable time:
πŸͺ΄ Holiday house plants like hollies, mistletoes, lilies, and poinsettias can be toxic or hazardous if ingested.
πŸ₯§ Human snacks and meals can be too fatty for pets or may contain harmful ingredients such as grapes, chocolate, and xylitol.
πŸŽ€ Supervise pets around holiday decorations like tinsel, ornaments, wrapping paper, and candles.

Sending you and your loved ones warm wishes for a joyous holiday season!

With the recent rise in vehicle break-ins, please take extra caution when you're out and about. πŸš—πŸš™πŸ›»

Whether you're off on a road trip, stopping by a dog park, or going on a trail, be sure to avoid leaving any valuables in your vehicles. If you absolutely have to leave certain items, do your best to keep them out of plain sight. Always keep your doors and windows locked and shut, and keep your vehicle keys safe. It's best to park someplace open, visible, and well-lit too.

Stay safe everyone!

πŸ’‰ The leptospirosis (lepto) vaccine is now recommended as a core vaccine for dogs. 🐩

πŸ€” What is leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is a disease caused by Leptospira bacteria that is commonly spread through the urine of infected animals, which contaminates soil and water sources. The disease is zoonotic, which means it can be transmitted from animals to humans. Dogs can be infected by drinking or coming into contact with contaminated soil or water.

πŸ” Why is it now considered as a core vaccine?
The vaccine used to be recommended for dogs who like to swim, spend a lot of time outdoors, or go in areas with lots of wildlife. However, there have been more cases of leptospirosis recently, even in dogs that don't necessarily fall in those categories. Experts are also finding leptospirosis in dryer areas instead of in tropical or semi-tropical environments.

🩺 What we're doing about it:
We're still following a minimal vaccine protocol, but we'll be recommending the lepto vaccine to more of our clients. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact us!

πŸ’ŠπŸ¦ This week is World AMR Awareness Week! πŸ¦ πŸ’Š

AMR stands for antimicrobial resistance and this happens when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites stop responding to antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents. This increases the risk of disease spread and severe illness as many infections are now harder or impossible to treat. 🧫🦠

AMR is a serious global concern that affects human health, animal health, food production, and the environment. This is why World AMR Awareness Week was started by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to raise awareness and understanding of AMR, and to promote responsible use of antimicrobials. πŸ’ŠπŸ’‰πŸ©Ή

Be sure to follow the instructions given to you by us if your pet has been prescribed antibiotics. Avoid using antibiotics unnecessarily as well if you happen to have some at home, whether for yourself or your furry friends. It's important that such medications aren't misused or overused when it comes to AMR.

Visit WHO's website if you'd like to learn more. You can also visit the Government of Canada's website for some great AMR awareness materials too.

Have you heard of the National Pet Food Bank Map? πŸπŸ“Œ

πŸ—ΊοΈ Canada's first ever interactive Pet Food Bank Map was recently launched by Humane Canada and PetSmart Charities of Canada.

πŸ“ It was created to help identify over 300 pet food assistance programs in the country for pet parents facing food insecurity. This map can be used to find nearby pet food banks and distribution networks.

Visit the map at humanecanada.ca/en/nationalpetfoodbank

If you have some pet food that your furry friends don't seem to like or can't eat anymore, consider donating it to your local pet food bank!

For those living in or close to Guelph, you can look into donating to the Guelph Humane Society, Chalmers Food Bank West, Guelph Food Bank, or Hope House.

November marks Pet Diabetes Awareness Month!

Diabetes is the inability for our pets to regulate glucose in the body. Because of this, we need to then give them injectable insulin to help regulate their glucose levels.
Though diagnosing your pet with Diabetes can seem scary, with the right medication, diet and exercise, our pets can live long, joyful and relatively normal lives!

Our employee Hayley knows this first hand when her beloved doxie Forrest was diagnosed with Diabetes 4 years ago.
With regular vet care and a little trial and error in the beginning, he now continues to live a happy healthy life!

Diagnosing Diabetes early is critical to ensuring our pets wellbeing and preventing some additional health issues that can be associated with diabetes.
Early symptoms of diabetes include an increase in drinking and urination, urinary incontinence, weight loss, and an increase or decrease in appetite. If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms, they should be seen by your vet right away.

Regular vet visits are important for your pet’s health and assist in catching these types of health issues early!
