If you're looking for ways to help the drastically declining wild bird 🐦 populations in North America, plant trees! 🌲

Birds are losing habitat, weather shelter and food sources for a variety of reasons but every backyard tree helps!

This is the long billed curlew and while only found in the lower half of BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan it is a birding favourite! It's beak is perfectly adapted to dig deep into the soft base of the grasslands where they spend their summers raising their young and eating insects, worms and small fish.

The tree swallow is one of the most common swallows in North America and is found from coast to coast in the upper half of the continent. It's gorgeous iridescent blue shine is unmistakable and will live in a variety of habitats but prefers nesting in holes. This preference makes them nearly completely dependant on nesting boxes and woodpecker holes when trees are immature or sparse. Although they prefer to be near water they may spend time in your yard swooping through the air in hunt of flying insects which make up the majority of their diet.

This dusty grouse is so unique its actually been reclassified as a species in its own right! The males have purple reddish air sacs and their courtship dances are epic! These ground based birds are actually quite quiet contrary to their outrageous looks and they love to feast on evergreen needles 🌲 , leaves 🍃 , flowers 💐 , fruit and insects 🐜

This is the sweet natured but highly territorial Eastern Kingbird! These small birds are known for being particularly aggressive with crows and hawks especially while the monogamous couples watch over their eggs. If you've seen a pair of them you're in luck because these couples return to the same spot every year for the duration of their lifetime!

Eastern Kingbirds are very welcomed guests as they feast on flying insects, fruit and wild berries!

Along the shores of the far north these distinctively coloured birds spend their days turning over stones for mollusks and other small crustacean treats. The ruddy turnstone lays its eggs in a small scratch near cold arctic shorelines and delight bird lovers and visitors aline with their too-witt and titititititi calls.

These exotic looking birds fly all over Canada and even up to far north Nunavut during breeding season. Sandhilll cranes are unique, long-legged birds who I like to call the flamingo of the north! These gangly yet graceful birds have a very interesting dance, loud rolling calls and their young leave the nest as early as 8 hours after hatching with the ability to swim!

Have you seen them flying by?

As we see migratory birds making their way back to Saskatchewan, the Ministry of Environment in partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada is monitoring for cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds.

If you find a deceased bird or birds that appear to be sick, you can report them online to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (https://cwhc.wildlifesubmissions.org/) or through the “Wildlife Health Tracker” phone app.

You can also contact the Ministry of Environment Inquiry Centre at 1-800-567-4224 or the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at 1-306-966-5815 for more information.
