We invite you to learn with us about Nova Scotia’s Eastern Hemlock trees and a threat they face—the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid (HWA). This insect has the potential to drastically impact our Sackville parks. As of spring 2025, HEMLOCK WOOLY ADELGID HAS NOT YET BEEN IDENTIFIED IN OUR COMMUNITY. Join with us on social media as we learn about hemlocks and what the community can do to help protect our hemlock trees. On Sunday, June 8th at 10:30am we will have a hands-on learning event in the parks with local experts. Please consider joining us for this event.

If you identify the presence of the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid on private land or in our parks please notify HRM by calling 311 and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) by filing out this CFIA form.

For more information on the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid please check out nshemlock.ca.

When it comes to pests, we seem to be having an increase in the tree killing variety. While the causes can vary for pest propagation, the treatment for most unfortunatly is removal and destruction. Please be vigilant of insects and care for your trees. Not just for your wallet (trees add value to property), but for the planet. You don't have to be an expert but just be aware. Sometimes it's as easy as sending a photo to your local university, museum, department of the environment or an arborist/specialist for identification concerns. If results are positive, then a plan can be developed for mitigation. Hopefully saving trees for future generations to enjoy and benefit from.

Proud of this team and these guys. They knocked it out of the park for a happy customer last week. Nice to be the and just chill out on the ground teaching and offering pointers to our newest climber and the occasional bit of muscle to pull brush. Thankful to have such a cohesive group. Without employees we would be nothing.

Earlier this fall we had an awesome customer who was good with a drone. This is just a little bit of the guys taking some weight off for a safe guided fell/pull over. This dying tree is going to be repurposed as furniture and home decor - to be milled after drying out.

Signs provided by DNRR about Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) have been put up at the Armcrest, First Lake and Lakeview/Windsor Junction trail heads. HWA has not been reported in Sackville Lake Provincial Park, but it has been found in HRM including at Oakfield Provincial Park. For more information on how to help reduce the spread of HWA visit https://www.nshemlock.ca/

Just wanted to share a story of being in small business - One of my laborers went to drop a load at a local gravel pit/dump site and saw in another pile something orange. He dug out a good looking Stihl TS700 cutoff saw. With the blade and tax just shy of 3k. Some folks would keep it however, once it was in my hands, I contacted my local dealer and they gave me the name of the original purchaser from the serial number. I called them and it had been stolen from them some time ago. Whatever kind of life it had, it's now back with the original purchaser. Some people may call me a sucker but I truly believe in Karma. What goes around comes around. I've been helped before in business and this time it was my turn. There are good people out there everywhere. Keep the good going in this world. Be an example for your kids, family, customers.

Road trip to get a few trees for clients this week. We don't just cut down or prune trees... we plant them too. From roots to shoots we provide total tree life cycle care. As a company, we also donate to the treecanada.ca fund to help repopulate our forest canopy. For every tree we take down, 2 get planted. Today, there are more forests in Nova Scotia than in my grandfathers time thanks to responsible forest managment practices like this and legislation encouraging responsible stewardship. Today we planted a Red oak and a Norway Spruce for 2 seperate clients. Future generations will enjoy the benefits of these trees. Current homeowners will get to enjoy shaping their properties for years to come. "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is right now!"

being in the tree care industry you see a lot of people focusing on removals and yes, those are needed in a lot of cases. However, we need to remember that we need forests to survive. Pruning or thinning can help in alot of cases. Forests and urban forests - the canopy, branches, stems, and roots provide homes, habitat and food for a multitude of species including ourselves. All too often we see damage in the forest whether it is from an unsustainable practice, littering or Accidental Fire. Stewarding our forest is a job for everybody. In Nova Scotia the hemlocks, ash and to a lesser extent Birches Maples Pines spruces are all under attack by insects and fungus. Do your part and trying to help these forests , do not move firewood. Pack out what you bring in. Purchase from a local vendor. Above all, Get out there and explore our forest, and if it's hunting season remember to wear your blaze orange and be safe!
